Free Throw[1], also known as Basketball (バスケットボール[2],Basukettobōru?), is an Action Item that appears in Sonic Free Riders. It is used to attack leading racers.
For all intended purposes, the Free Throw takes the appearance of a regular basketball.
Overview
Free Throw can be obtained from the different Item Boxes on the race tracks. However, it is only available to racers riding on a Bike Type Extreme Gear and will not appear if the rider is using another type of Extreme Gear. The Item is also not available for racers in the first few leading positions.
When deploying Free Throw, the characters grab a basketball and throws it, as if they are shooting hoops, at the racer in the first place of the current race. If the ball successfully connects with the rider, they will take damage and lose all of their Rings, then be stunned briefly, giving other racers the chance to overtake them. However, the first-place rider cannot be affected by Free Throw if they are performing the following actions when the item connects with the rider: grinding on a Grind Rail, using Air Ride, or riding in an off-Gear section.
To use the Free Throw in gameplay, the player must perform the aforementioned throw.
Trivia
The Free Throw is the equivalent to the Tee Shot for the Bike Type Extreme Gear riders.
