Ring Eater

Ring Eater, also known as Magnetic Barrier, is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an Extreme Gear Gear Part that grants the Extreme Gear riders the ability to attract nearby Rings.

Description

Ring Eater is an installable performance-enhancing component for Extreme Gears. Its actual appearance is unknown, though it is presented as an icon on the head-up display in the top-left corner of the game screen. In gameplay, the player can activate Ring Eater under special circumstances, which will attract any Rings within the vicinity of the user, allowing easier accumulation of Rings.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

The Gear Part first appeared in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity under the name Magnetic Barrier. In this game, its icon is a light blue-colored circle with an electromagnetic field inscribed in it. Here, Magnetic Barrier is a Gear Part permanently installed into only certain Extreme Gears.

In gameplay, Magnetic Barrier and its ability will be disabled when starting a new race. To activate Magnetic Barrier, the player must press one of the following buttons after collecting a certain number of Rings:

When activating Magnetic Barrier, the player's Rings will be reduced accordingly by the number needed to enable it and the Extreme Gear is surrounded by an orange void, indicating that the Gear Part coming into effect. After that, a magnetic blue and white barrier forms around the playable character. The following Extreme Gears come equipped with the Magnetic Barrier:

Sonic Free Riders

The Gear Part reappeared in Sonic Free Riders where it is named Ring Eater. In this game, its icon is a purple-colored circle with a magnet and three sparks above the magnet's poles inscribed in it. Here, Ring Eater is a customizable Gear Part that can be attached to different Extreme Gears. It can be bought from the shop for 1,500 Rings after the player has completed Team Babylon's story.

If Ring Eater is installed into the front slot, it becomes active in gameplay once the race begins. If installed into the rear slot, however, the player can activate, and as well deactivate, Ring Eater through switching stances by turning their body around due to the Kinect controls of the game.

Trivia

• Despite its resemblance to the Magnetic Shield, Ring Eater will not protect the player (nor will it dissipate) from attacks or obstacles that can damage the player.
