Dark Embrace

Become invincible by turning into a pool of darkness. Touching a rival will corrupt them, destroying the next item they try to use.

The Dark Embrace is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Boost Item used primarily to increase the user's speed.

Description

The Dark Embrace appears as a shadowy pool of darkness on the ground surrounded by smog, both as an icon and on the track.

Overview

In gameplay, the Dark Embrace can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Mephiles.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Dark Embrace by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user will sink into the ground, now just a thick shadow, and the Dark Embrace. The power-up will increase the speed of the user for a short amount of time and make them invincible to any obstacle or item used against them. The duration of the Dark Embrace is shown by the decreasing gauge on top of this power-up's icon on the bottom of the HUD whenever the Dark Embrace is in effect. Any rival character who makes contact with the user while the Dark Embrace is in effect will be slowed down and a shadow will float around the top of their head. In addition to this, a curse is placed on the player and the next power-up they click on at the bottom of the HUD will be destroyed and rendered unusable. Once the power-up is destroyed, the rival character can return to their normal speed. The curse will be indicated by a third of the HUD circle's arc glowing purple. A rival character can only take the hit from three Dark Embrace at a time; when this is done, the full HUD circle will glow purple. Additionally, one shadow will appear over the rival character's head depending on how many times they were hit with the item (including Swarming Darkness and Stalking Shade). However, if any character has four shadows in any moment, all shadows will disappear, causing the player much higher damage, lose even more RIngs and slow down for couple of seconds.

The Dark Embrace can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 2, 8 and 14 respectively. For each upgrade, the duration of the Dark Embrace will increase.
