The Wipeout is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description

Wipeout takes the form of a giant wave of water, both as an icon and on the tracks.

Overview

In gameplay, the Wipeout can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Tropical Storm and Tidal Wave. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Chao Attack if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned users.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Wipeout by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose three tidal waves simultaneously on three different lanes: the lane the user is on and the those adjacent to it. These waves will then travel down the lanes they were deployed on in front of the user until they hit either a rival character, Badnik or obstacle, or they wear off. These waves are treated separately, so if a Tidal Wave on one lane disappears, the others will continue their trajectory. Rival characters that make contact with the Tidal Wave will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. To avoid the Tidal Wave, the playable character has to either step out of its lane or jump over it.
