EMP Shield

Protect yourself and gain a little speed with a single gadget! Your rivals will also have their Items disabled if they get too close.

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The EMP Shield is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Trap Item used primarily to protect the user from damage.

Description

The EMP Shield's icon takes the form of a gadget with an amber plate that is shaped like an house-shaped pentagon, but with a flat-sided top point (making it a hexagon) and sharp outer edges. It also has a gray attachment on the bottom with a light blue light in the center, and it emits light blue ripples. In gameplay, this power-up becomes a light blue energy sphere with several rings circling around it, which is generated by three gadgets identical to the EMP Shield's icon that circle around above the user.

Overview

In gameplay, the EMP Shield can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Movie Tails. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the EMP Shield if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the EMP Shield by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. While active, the EMP Shield will increase the user's speed a little. In addition, the EMP Shield has a time limit. The duration of the EMP Shield is shown by the decreasing gauge on top of this power-up's icon on the bottom of the HUD whenever the EMP Shield is in effect. Also, while the EMP Shield is in effect, it will negate one instance of damage the user would otherwise receive during the race, although doing so will cause the EMP Shield to disappear, effectively ending this power-up prematurely. Any rival character who makes contact with the user or runs close by on lanes adjacent to the user while the EMP Shield is in effect will take damage, causing them to lose Rings, slow down momentarily and have their Item slots on the bottom of the HUD locked for a short time, thus temporarily preventing the player from using the power-ups stored in them.

The EMP Shield can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 4, 10 and 16 respectively. For each upgrade, the player will increase the damage dealt with the EMP Shield.
