Whelp (ドラゴンパピー, Doragonpapii?, lit. "Dragon Puppy"), also known as Drake and Puppy, is a recurring dragon form within the Breath of Fire series. They are usually the first level of dragon transformation, soon being superseded by an adult dragon transformation.
Breath of Fire
Drakes, the first and weakest type of dragon transformation, are the earliest-available type of dragon transformation. They are only capable of attacking a single enemy with their breath weapon. There are three sub-species of drakes: the Flame Drake (FlmDr), Snow Drake (SnoDr), and Thunder Drake (ThrDr) – all of which are obtained after Ryu completes the trial in the first Dragon Temple.
Breath of Fire II
Puppies – namely the Fire Puppy, Ice Puppy, and Thunder Puppy – are obtained in a scripted event after clearing out the well-dwelling monsters in Capitan.
A game bug affecting the elemental Dragon forms makes them have non-elemental damage, leaving the Puppies the only ones to deal elemental damage.

Whelps are produced by using any single Dragon Gene other than Force, Fusion, Infinity, or Miracle. They have slightly more HP than Ryu in his inhuman state, and about twice his physical attack power.
An enhanced form of Whelp named Wildfire (クイックシルバー, Kuikkushiruba?, lit. "Quicksilver") can be formed by combining the Miracle, Thorn and Reverse genes. This form reduces Ryu's health by 90%, but grants immunity to all elements besides Holy (Which it is vulnerable to), grants immunity to Death and Status effects, and sets Ryu's attack to 250%, Defense to 300%, and Agility to 200%.
