In Breath of Fire III, Dragon genes are the spirits and essence of deceased dragons turned into purple, typically pentagon-shaped Chrysm ore. However, some of the ore are circular in shape instead. Whenever Ryu finds one, he can hear the cries of the deceased Dragon Clan member inside of it, and that individual's power becomes available for Ryu to use. In Breath of Fire IV a similar function is served by Dragon gems.
