Deis, referred to as Bleu in the English language translations of the first two games, is a recurring character throughout the Breath of Fire series. She is a powerful sorceress who excels at combative magic. She tends to be vain, aloof, and occasionally lazy, however, she is willing to use her considerable abilities to help if she sees a fit reason to do so.
Unlike Ryu and Nina, who appear as different characters who share the same name and similar traits throughout the series, Deis is the same individual throughout all of her appearances. It is revealed in Breath of Fire III that she is one of the immortal extra-dimensional beings known as the Endless, as well as the older sister of Myria, whom she often clashes with due to the latter's desire to either rule or destroy the world.
Deis appears in each of the mainline entries of the franchise, with the sole exception of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. However, according to interviews with the design team, she was intended to make a cameo in the game, but her appearance was ultimately cut.
Role throughout the series
Breath of Fire
- Main article: Bleu (Breath of Fire)
Deis debuted in the original Breath of Fire game, which is also the only time where she is a required party member. Long ago, she assisted a Light Dragon Clan warrior and his allies in defeating Myria. They used the six Goddess Keys to seal Myria away, after which Deis left for Wisdon to slumber.
By the present day, the party seeks her aid when the Dark Dragon Clan attempts to use its new weapon against Prima. Upon being awakened, she gives them an Old Egg and instructs them to toss it into the underwater volcano. Afterwards, she joins the party to assist them in defeating the Dark Dragon Clan, as well as prevent their emperor Zog from once again reviving her sister.
Breath of Fire II
- Main article: Bleu (Breath of Fire II)
In the second game, Deis is an optional secret character, adding herself to your party should you seek her out. Her lair is found approximately in the same location as in the first game, but she left it to pose as a student in HomeTown's Magic School. In addition to her typical combat-based magic, Deis also learns a few support spells in this game as well. She also has the highest stats in all categories at Level 99, with the exception for Guts.
Breath of Fire III
- Main article: Deis (Breath of Fire III)
Prior to the events of the third game, Deis gets imprisoned beneath Angel Tower after protesting against Myria's genocidal attempts against the Brood. 500 years later, she is finally freed by the party, and will join them as a Master should the player carefully choose what they say to her.
Deis later appears at the end of the game after the party defeats Myria. Deis comforts her despairing sister by telling her that the mortals Myria swore to protect were more than capable of caring for themselves, and that the world will survive one way or another. Deis and Myria then vanish into the unknown.
Breath of Fire IV
- Main article: Deis (Breath of Fire IV)
In the fourth game, Deis describes herself as being summoned from another world, in the same manner as Ryu and Fou-Lu. In her case, the incarnation did not include a physical body, forcing her to inhabit some armor instead. Said armor constantly refers to her as "Ershin," a name Deis dislikes. However, due to people mistakenly believing that the armor is referring to itself in the third person, the name "Ershin" is given to the armor instead.
Though Deis is initially not fond of Ershin, often calling it a "tin can," she eventually comes to begrudgingly respect it, even willing to sacrifice her freedom in order to better assist the party and keep Ershin's power supply running a little longer.
Breath of Fire 6
Deis shows up in Chapter 8, in the Rezen Mountains.
Personality
Deis is a confident individual and quite proud of her power. Although she has a long lifespan, she is quite childish, irresponsible, somewhat of a pervert, and above all, lazy. She tends to hibernate for several hundred years at a time inside a temple, guarded by spirits who stand over her. In spite of this, she does have a good heart, and is wiling to help if she sees it fit to do so.
Throughout the series, Deis has a tendency to pick on most of the Nina incarnations. Though it's never stated why, some games imply it's because Deis may have an interest in Ryu herself, and views Nina as competition. As the story progresses however, Deis's attitude towards Nina will change to a more respectable level.
Appearance
Deis's appearance varies throughout the series. Commonly, her top-half resembles a beautiful woman, while her body from the waist down resembles a serpent, though there have been a few occasions where Deis is depicted with human legs instead. Her clothing tends to be a shade of purple with yellow trimmings, as well as sporting some jewelry and gold accessories. The color of her eyes are purple, and she is always portrayed with her signature blue hair, which she either keeps long and flowing, or tied in a ponytail.
In the first and second game, Deis wears a purple shirt with gold trimmings and highlights, with her cleavage exposed in the middle. She wears a few accessories, such as green earrings, some gold bracelets and armbands, and some rings. She also sports a cloak that's purple on the outside, and red on the inside. She wears the hood of her cloak on her head in the first game, but doesn't do in the second game.
In the third game, Deis is initially found completely naked - save for some green bracelets - though she later puts some clothes on. Deis sports a short purple top with a matching purple skirt with a yellow belt. Her sleeves are also purple with yellow highlights and point upwards. She also stylizes her hair in a ponytail.
In the fourth game, Deis sports a long, purple dress that has a cut in the middle to expose her legs. Her dress is also a bit skimpy in the back, exposing a bit of her rear. She also wears white sleeves on each arm, and some gray anklets. She once again stylizes her hair in a ponytail, held in place with a yellow band.
In the sixth game, her outfit is pretty similar to the first and second game, minus the cloak. Her accessories include some gold earrings, armbands, and bracelets. She keeps her hair stylized in a ponytail, held in place with a gold band.
