Ursula is a playable character who appears in Breath of Fire IV. She is the prideful adopted granddaughter of General Rhun of the Fou Imperial Army, who has herself ascended to the rank of commander. She is skilled in the use of firearms.

Role in Breath of Fire IV

Ursula was orphaned after a war. After discovering her in a ruined town, General Rhun took her in and raised her as his surrogate granddaughter. She now serves as a commander in the Imperial Army of the Fou Empire. When the Empire proves incapable of destroying Fou-Lu, Ursula is sent to capture the other half of the Yorae Dragon, Ryu. When she finally encounters him at the Abandoned Village, Ryu eliminates all of the other soldiers in his Kaiser form. The party determines to head to the capital to find Fou-Lu, at which point they and Ursula both realize that it would be mutually beneficial to travel together as it would provide the party with a military escort and allow Ursula to remain faithful to her orders.

Personality

Ursula is hotheaded, stubborn, and likes to solve everything by force, most of the time with her guns. She has a cold nature, and possess a natural gift for leadership and strategy due her military discipline. However, she does have morals, as she was disgusted by how Rasso tortured the citizens of Chek just for information on Ryu's whereabouts, calling it unnecessary. She also has a softer side that is shown when around her grandfather, and is even depicted smiling when she is alone with him. Much like Scias, she is a loner, spending most of her time alone to her own thoughts rather than socializing with the other party members. When she gets frightened, such as when she first encounters sea lice, her voice shakes and is quick to pull out her gun, nearly blasting Ryu's head off once out of fear.

In Battle

Ursula is perhaps the most balanced character in the party, aside from Ryu in his dragon forms. However, she is so well balanced that she really isn't the best in any particular field. Each one of her stats are average or better. Her physical defense is average, her magical resistance fairly high, and her agility is above average. However, her physical attacks do suffer from relatively low accuracy. She's the only character whose weapons are capable of attacking all enemies by default. Her magic list consists of spells of the wind, earth, and fire elements, making her a good staple in ability combos. She also possesses a few spells for debilitating enemies. Ursula can be given the Icicle skill for complete elemental versatility and be paired up with a Master who can help her overcome her accuracy issues. In addition, Ursula's unique ability is Revival, in which she has a 50% chance of reviving with a single HP whenever she is KO'd. Ursula has an affinity to Fire which grants her an innate 25% resistance to all damage of that type.[2]

Trivia

  • There are three scenes involving Ursula that were censored from the original. One was where Ursula drops her pants in front of Zig and his crew to prove herself. In the second Ryu was trying to keep Ursula from performing a certain action and accidentally groped her breast, which she gives him a piercing glare and Ryu's hasty response. Interestingly, this scene were Ryu holds Ursula back and accidentally gropes her is left largely unchanged while both of their responses to the event are removed. In the third scene, Nina and Ursula were taking a bath in while Ryu spies on them.
  • Ursula is often seen polishing her guns.
  • Ursula is unique among the party by having at least two different attack animations depending on the type of gun she's equipped with.
  • Ursula is scared of sea lice.
    • She also hates the sea due to the salt "getting into everything", including her guns.
  • Ursula's hobby is doing laundry.
