Draug (ドーガ Dohga) is a supporting protagonist of the Archanea series of the Fire Emblem franchise.

In Japanese, Draug is voiced by Ryota Takeuchi in games and Yasuhiko Kawazu in the Fire Emblem OVA. In English, he is voiced by Patrick Seitz in games and Jason C. Lee in the OVA. The former also voices Zeke/Sirius, Hector, Basilio, Laurent, and from Fire Emblem Heroes onward, Brady.

Appearance

Draug is a buff young man with short green hair. In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, he is clad in a full suit of blue armor with gold accents. From Shadow Dragon onward, Draug's lower armor was reduced to thigh guards and boots, exposing his white pants. As a Mirage, Draug is a floating suit of dark blue armor with twin axes merged to his hands. His head is covered by a helm with eight vertical slits; inside his facial features are obscured by a fiery glow.

Personality

Like most knights of Altea, Draug is devoted to both his country and his liege. He has a reserved demeanor has refuses to boast about his achievements, despite his fighting skills and valor on the battlefield. Draug's humility is such that he refuses to accept credit for feats he never actually accomplished, as demonstrated by denying Kris' claims that he has almost superhuman strength.

Biography

War of Shadows

At the dawn of the War of Shadows, the vast majority of Altea's army marched to battle with King Cornelius. Draug, however, was one of several soldiers who stayed behind to guard Altea castle; this meager platoon was assisted by a squadron from the allied kingdom of Gra. However, Gra ultimately betrayed Altea to Dolhr, leading the squadron at Altea castle to secure it in the Empire's name as well. Draug happened to be stationed close to the ocean when during Gra's betrayal, and used the time he had to secure a boat for any member of the royal family or soldier able to escape the fray. Ultimately, Prince Marth, the tactician Malledus, and knights Jagen, Abel, and Gordin successfully fled the castle accompanied by Abel's good friend Cain, who returned from the battlefield after Cornelius was slain to deliver the king's final message. As Marth's retinue rendezvoused with Draug, a woman from a nearby village appeared. Introducing herself as Norne, she long harbored a desire to serve her country, and volunteered to join Marth's army. Marth accepted Norne, and all journeyed to the island nation of Talys, where they stayed in exile.

Around two years later, Gaulter pirates led by Gazzak assaulted Talys. Marth, Draug, and the rest of Marth's retinue assisted Talys' Princess Caeda in routing the marauders. After the island's successful defense, King Mostyn advised Marth, Draug, and the rest of Marth's band to take arms against Dolhr's dominion over Archanea. Draug helped Marth to liberate Aurelius and the Holy Kingdom of Archanea from Dolhr. He also helped to avenge Altea by storming Gra and aiding the killing of King Jiol. Finally, Draug contributed to Altea's liberation, the defeat of Dolhr's allies Grust and Macedon, and the storming of Dolhr itself, where Marth slew the tyrannical Medeus. After the War of Shadow's end, Marth made Draug the commander of an outland garrison whose soldiers came to respect his compassionate and stalwart nature.

War of Heroes

One year later, Marth called Draug back to Altea castle, where he helped train a new generation of knights. As the trials persisted, hundreds of recruits dwindled to 20. Some of the remainder included the 7th Platoon, which consisted of Kris, Katarina, Luke, Roderick, and Ryan. During this later stage of recruitment, Draug potentially tested the 7th Platoon with a mock battle, but was defeated with the help of a new recruit named Cecil and steel-grade weapons procured by Katarina. Impressed with the platoon's skill, Draug offered his services for their final trial. They emerged victorious and received their final score, which varied based on their performance in each mock battle. Regardless of the exact score, the platoon did well enough to graduate to full knighthood. However, on the day of the 7th Platoon's graduation ceremony, an unknown number of assailants besieged Altea castle. It was then that Katarina revealed her true name was Reese, and that she was an assassin sent to kill Marth. If Draug decided to help the 7th Platoon, he was present to help fend off Reese's attack, saving Marth's life.

Some time after the attempted assassination of Marth, the Hero-King received a letter from his old friend Hardin, who married Princess Nyna of the war-ravaged Holy Kingdom of Archanea. With his sweeping reforms, Hardin reconstructed the country into the powerful Holy Empire of Archanea. Hardin explained that a rebellion erupted in the Archanean-occupied Kingdom of Grust, and requested Marth's assistance in suppressing it. As Altea was a weaker nation, Marth was obligated to obey Hardin, so he gathered Jagen, Arran, Gordin, Draug, and the 7th Platoon to help settle the dispute. Unbeknownst to Marth, Draug, and the others, Hardin's true plan was to distract Marth and his strongest soldiers, leaving Altea defenseless for a surprise assault. All Hardin needed was a pretext to declare war, which was given to him after Marth became disgusted with Grust's occupying leader, General Lang, and defied his orders. Altea quickly fell to Archanea, though Marth's sister Princess Elice bought enough time for a few members of Marth's retinue to escape.

Deciding to liberate Grust from Lang's tyranny, Marth, Draug, and the rest of Marth's army searched for the mercenary Ogma, who was protecting Grust's true heirs, Yubello and Yumina, from Lang. They found the three under attack by bandits, and helped fight off the assailants. After successfully rescuing Ogma and the royal twins, Marth's army marched on to Lang's headquarters, Osten Keep. With Draug's assistance, Marth defeated Lang once and for all, and found Bishop Wendell imprisoned in the keep's dungeons. The old bishop warned Marth that the world risked falling to ruin thanks to the shattering of the Starsphere, and advised him to collect the shards in Chasmir's Fane of Raman; unfortunately, the temple was ransacked by bandits. After routing the thieves, Marth's army attempted to return to Archanea via the Chasmir Bridge, but were were confronted by Hardin's army, who were determined to punish all dissidents. All attacks on Hardin's person were repelled by a dark magical shield, forcing Marth, Draug, and the vanguard to flee to the ocean while the rearguard distracted Hardin's men. The vanguard took a boat to the desert city of Khadein in the hopes that they could find a spell to penetrate Hardin's shield; at the city they also reunited with the rearguard. At Khadein's school of magic, Marth was contacted by the White Sage Gotoh, who explained that Hardin's dark shield and moral corruption were insitgated by the powerful Darksphere. Gotoh had the Lightsphere, which would cancel the Darksphere's magic, but Marth would need to reach him at the Ice Dragon Temple. Draug traveled with Marth through Anri's way, helping to gather Starsphere shards en route to the temple. When Marth's group reached it's destination, Gotoh bequeathed the Lightsphere to Marth, reforged the Starsphere, and teleported everyone back to Altea.

After liberating Altea, Marth learned from Gotoh that Medeus' right-hand man, Gharnef, had returned and planned on using four clerics to resurrect Medeus. Draug accompanied Marth to Archanea to prevent Princess Nyna's abduction, only to learn that Hardin personally delivered her to Gharnef. After a brutal campaign, the Lightsphere's magic pierced the Darksphere's shield, mortally wounded Hardin but briefly restoring his senses. With his last breath, Hardin regretted his actions and begged Marth to save Nyna. Draug accompanied him to The Dragon's Table, where a resurrected Medeus held the four brainwashed clerics, intending to sacrifice them should he be slain again. However, each maiden was released from their trance by their loved ones, allowing Marth to kill Medeus once again, ending the War of Heroes. In the war's aftermath, many countries on the Archanean continent were left destitute, and most of their rulers relinquished their territory to Marth. After declaring himself First King of the Archanean Alliance, Marth assigned Draug command of Grust's garrison, where he faithfully carried out his duties.

Other Media

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

Like all Mirages, Draug hailed from a version of Archanea. Thanks to the machinations of this Archanea's Gharnef, Draug was transported to Tokyo, but lost his memories. He bonded with Fortuna Entertainment scout Barry Goodman and became his Mirage Partner, but during a battle with a particularly tough mirage, their connection was severed. Sometime later, Barry and Mirage Draug were reunited at Daitou TV Station during a Mirage attack, but the latter was cursed in the interim and promptly possessed Barry. Fortuna Mirage Masters led by Itsuki Aoi entered the Illusory Daitou TV Idolasphere to route the Mirage threat and ensure the safety of Fortuna member Mamori Minamono, who secured a spot on Daitou TV's idol show Serenade thanks to Barry.

Eventually, the Mirage Masters reach Barry, only to be joined by Mamori, whose Performa awakened during her time in the Idolasphere and who wanted to help free Barry in gratitude for all the times he supported her. Mamori's singing weakened Mirage Draug's hold on Barry enough for Itsuki and his Mirage Partner Chrom to break their connection. Barry encouraged Mamori to purify Mirage Draug, and she became his new Mirage Master. After the defeat of Mirage Medeus, Draug regained his memories and eventually returned to his Archanea.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Human Draug is a playable character who was available to summon on the game's official launch. His appearance is based on his design from New Mystery of the Emblem. On January 20, 2020, Mamori Minamono was made available to summon, with Mirage Draug manifesting in her neutral portrait and when she executes Special attacks.

Super Smash Bros.

Draug appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Novice Shield-type spirit using artwork from a Fire Emblem: Trading Card Game card. When equipped to a fighter, Draug grants one extra support spirit slot and extra weight, making it more difficult to be knocked around at the cost of reducing speed. To obtain Draug, he must be defeated in a stamina spirit battle, represented by a King K. Rool on Castle Siege. This enemy K. Rool has increased defense and super armor, but slower movement.

Fire Emblem OVA

Draug is a supporting character in the two episodes of the Fire Emblem OVA, which adapts the first three chapters and some backstory of Mystery of the Emblem. As the English dub of the OVA predated the Western release of any Fire Emblem media, Draug's Japanese name of Dohga was retained. His role is much the same as the relevant chapters of Mystery of the Emblem, serving as a knight loyal to Altea and Prince Marth (though their names were translated as Aritia and Mars, respectively).

Trivia

In addition to Draug, Zeke/Sirius, Hector, Basilio, and Laurent (and Brady from Heroes onward), Patrick Seitz also voices Fire Emblem villain Death Knight, as well as Garon from Heroes onward.
