~ Proto Man, Mega Man: Powered Up. |
Proto Man, known in Japan as Blues, and formerly known as Break Man, is the tritagonist of the classic Mega Man series.
He was the first Robot Master created by Dr. Light and is considered the brother to Mega Man and Roll. He debuted in Mega Man 3, serving Dr. Wily but later becomes a mentor figure to Mega Man.
Biography
Past
Proto Man was intended to be the first built humanoid robot with independent reasoning and thought. Although he exceeded Dr. Light's expectations, he was incomplete and his energy reactor had a defect that would eventually cause him to stop functioning. Dr. Light made plans to fix it, but Proto Man feared that his core being repaired would alter him, so he fled. Dr. Light believed Proto Man was dead and regretfully gave up on him.
Proto Man walked the world alone, until his energy core eventually died out. Dr. Wily found him dying near his secret labs and replaced Proto Man's solar core for a new nuclear one (that would end up being unstable), as well as turning him into a combat robot to research and learn more about building robots.
Mega Man 3
Proto Man made his debut in Mega Man 3 first under his alias Break Man. He would first be encountered during the Robot Master stages, where he, after whistling, would have a brief sparring with Mega Man before leaving. He would then be a mini boss after the Doc Robot stages before unlocking the Wily stages.
After the final battle with Wily, both Mega Man and Wily would be crushed under falling debris. A shadowed Proto Man would rescue Mega Man and bring him back to Dr. Light’s lab, but it was too late to save Wily,
During the epilogue, Dr. Light hears Proto Man’s whistle, and it is revealed that Proto Man was built before Mega Man.
Mega Man 4
After Mega Man defeats Dr. Cossack, Proto Man briefly appears in Mega Man 4 to rescue and show Kalinka, Cossack’s daughter, who explains that Wily kidnapped her and forced her father to fight Mega Man. Proto Man leaves, with Wily enraged that Proto Man betrayed him.
Mega Man 5
Proto Man is framed for a robot attack, as well as kidnapping Dr. Light. It is later revealed that Dr. Wily used a robot called a Dark Man to impersonate and frame Proto Man as revenge for the latter betraying him in the previous game.
Before fighting Dark Man 4, Proto Man gives Mega Man the unique L-Tank to recover all of his health and energy.
After the final fight with Dr. Wily, Proto Man prevents the walls from crushing Dr. Light and Mega Man, who the latter struggles to lift up the wall. Proto Man then clears a chunk of the way for Mega and Light to escape.
Mega Man 6
Proto Man appears to give Mega Man the Energy Balancer in Tomahawk Man's stage.

Appearance
Proto Man appears similar to Mega Man, however, he is usually depicted as taller, more mature, and the differences are immediate. Proto Man's armor is red, contrasting Mega Man's blue armor, as well as having a gray body with a belt of the same shade of red. He wears a sharp stylized helmet that features a white trim that points upward, as well as green sections inside the white ear coverings and the back of the helmet. He also wears large black sunglasses and a long yellow scarf. Like Mega Man, Proto Man has been seen without his helmet, his hair having very inconsistent depictions.
In Mega Man 3's concept art, he is shown having a black slicked-back hairstyle, but in Mega Man 8 he is depicted with a much longer sharp pompadour that curves upwards, then, in Rockman Complete Works he has a shorter hairstyle reminiscent of Astro Boy's, and in Mega Man Megamix he is depicted with a very similar hairstyle to Rock. Unlike the black hairstyle in Mega Man 3, his hair in these later appearances is brown.
Personality
Proto Man is a loner who is shown to be calm, cool, and collected in most situations. Similar to his brother, he has a strong sense of justice and helps those who need it. However, unlike his brother, Proto Man does not seem to hate violence and fighting. He is also shown to be quite intelligent.
As someone who highly values his individuality, Proto Man was willing to go through body failure in order to not be changed. As a result of this trait, he despises others that were made in his image or based off him in some way.
Proto Man is also very grateful, as shown by how he repays Wily's debt for temporarily fixing him (although in Powered Up, he was angrier and quick to resort to violence).
