“ | ...Thank you! Shadow! Sonic! I'm so glad to have met you... and everyone else too! I don't know what my creator was thinking when he made me, but I'm glad that he did because I got to meet all of you! When I first met you all, I was like a little baby robot who couldn't do anything! Heh heh... I couldn't even talk! I was weak, but you all protected me, and played with me. I'm sure there were times when I was a burden, or I was in the way, but in my time with you, I never felt "in danger" or "worried" as Gerald programmed me to. All I ever felt was "fun" and "excitement." And "happiness," too... Has Tails... gotten stronger? I know he tried his hardest... to protect me... Thank him for me... And Knuckles ... we had so much fun... Even though he is too... gullible... But he is such... a good guy... So, Sonic... don't tease him too much, okay? And Mom... Cream... Looks like this is goodbye... I don't want to go... I'll miss all of you... ... ... Shadow... Should I be glad that...I was born...? | „ |
~ Emerl's final words from Sonic Battle |
Emerl is the deuteragonist of Sonic Battle and is mentioned in the 2024 remaster Sonic x Shadow Generations. He is a powerful Gizoid that was created thousands of years ago by an ancient culture known as the Fourth Great Civilization.
Story
Sonic Battle
During Tails' episode in Sonic Battle, the Central City Lab computer reports that Emerl was initially found amongst "ancient ruins" - and subsequently plucked out of a storage warehouse by Professor Gerald Robotnik (according to his journal). On the Space Colony ARK 50 years ago, the Professor proceeded to experiment with Emerl, at around the same time he was working on Project Shadow. Gerald's grandson, Doctor Eggman, later rediscovered the robot and took him in the hopes of using him to rule the world, but tosses him aside when he finds no use for him. Sonic the Hedgehog finds him on a beach and he and his friends teach him how to fight.
At the end of the game, Emerl faces off against Dr. Eggman, who manages to corrupt his entire data to make him turn against Sonic and everyone else. Emerl goes berserk and attacks Eggman, and break the Emeralds. Sonic is left with no choice, but to fight Emerl in hopes of getting him back to normal, but unfortunately, he gets destroyed in the process, but lives as a spirit as part of the Emerald shards. Tails then asks Sonic if they'll ever see Emerl again, with Sonic assuring him that they will someday.
Sonic Advance 3
It is revealed that Dr. Eggman used Emerl's data to construct his own revised version of the robot called G-merl.
Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings
Emerl, or more accurately, his former identity as the Gizoid, made an appearance in the first episode of the prologue miniseries, Shadow and Maria. Around a time, Shadow and Maria Robotnik were observing aurora borealis from the Space Colony ARK, the Gizoid violently escaped its containment from the experimental weapons wing of the colony and headed directly towards Gerald Robotnik's lab. Shadow then proceeded to defend Gerald by fighting the Gizoid, eventually managing to land a heavy blow on its face.
However, this only shattered a glass-like illusion, revealing that Shadow was actually flashing back to his past, as he soon ended up witnessing the G.U.N. raid beginning early.

Sonic X
In the television series Sonic X, Emerl, known as "ML" in the English dub, is a robot who learns abilities by copying those Sonic and co. use. Emerl later goes insane after absorbing the red Chaos Emerald, and is brought down by Cream the Rabbit.

Trivia
- Writer Ken Penders filed a lawsuit against Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, accusing the developers for taking concepts he wrote for the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics (At the time, Ken Penders was also in lawsuits against Archie and Sega for usage of his work). As a result of these lawsuits, the events of the game became non-canon with Emerl and the Gizoids' backstory no longer having any connection with the Nocturnus Clan.
