Polterpup is a playful ghost canine that appears in the Luigi's Mansion series. He was formerly a major antagonist in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, but later redeems himself as he serves as Luigi's pet and ally in Luigi's Mansion 3.
Personality
Polterpup is a friendly, playful and rambunctious ghost that likes to explore and occasionally gets into mischief. In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Polterpup's rowdy nature became a hindrance for Luigi during his quest to reassemble the titular moon but showed remorse for his actions after the moon was restored. Although this seems to suggest Polterpup's behaviour was influenced by the Dark Moon (like many ghosts in Evershade Valley), Professor E. Gadd believes that all Polterpup really needed was an owner to take good care of him. In Luigi's Mansion 3, Polterpup is seen to be as boisterous as before but more considerate to Luigi.
Though he is a dog, he does not show animosity towards Polterkitty.
Biography
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Polterpup first appears at Gloomy Manor, playing with a gem he found outside the Mudroom until it gets stuck in a tree. He is encountered again at Haunted Towers where Luigi is forced to capture Polterpup after the ghost snatches a key found in the Rooftop Pool area. Polterpup is taken to E. Gadd's Bunker for containment only to immediately escape from captivity and unintentionally cause more trouble at the Old Clockworks and Treacherous Mansion before he was caught again. After the Dark Moon is restored following King Boos capture, Polterpup is set free along with the other ghosts of Evershade Valley and approaches Luigi feeling guilty about all the trouble he caused him. However, Luigi forgives Polterpup and decides to keep him as a pet.
If Luigi has collected any Gold Bones during the game, Polterpup will appear to revive him if his health is depleted.
Luigi's Mansion (3DS)
Polterpup will appear in the game if Luigi loses all his health after receiving a Gold Bone by scanning a Luigi Amiibo.
Luigi's Mansion 3
Polterpup travels with Luigi and company to the Last Resort for a luxurious vacation. However, he decides to explore the hotel on his own when the illusion masking its true appearance begins to fade as night falls. After Luigi escapes King Boo, Polterpup helps him find the Poltergust G-00 in the Garage and shows him how to use it before leading him to find Professor E. Gadd. Polterpup later assists Luigi in the Boilerworks by getting him to dry land when the Reservoir fills up with water. The ghost dog is again present when Polterkitty steals an Elevator Button for a second time and joins Luigi in tracking the cat through different floors to retrieve it.
During the final confrontation with King Boo on the Rooftop, Polterpup unintentionally saves Luigi by pushing him to one side before he could be imprisoned inside a portrait with his friends. King Boo attempts to pull the entire resort into the painting, which causes the building to collapse with Luigi on it, but Luigi manages to defeat him. As Luigi is falling to his impending doom, Polterpup rescues him once again by grabbing him in midair before he could hit the ground. After helping the restored ghosts restore their hotel, Polterpup accompanies Luigi and his freed friends on their way home and snuggles up to his owner as they both fall asleep on the bus.
