~ Their catchphrase. |
The Squid Sisters are major characters in the Splatoon franchise. They are two Inklings named Callie and Marie from the video game Splatoon. They are the hosts of Inkopolis' news. In the single-player mode, respectively, they're also both known as Agents 1 and 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon.
Appearance
Callie has black/pink hair, a pink and white hat resembling the Japanese food, ikayaki, a sleeveless outfit that ends in shorts, pink tights and hair that resembles a female Inkling's, but behind. Marie has white/green hair, a green and white hat resembling a calamari ring, a sleeveless outfit that ends in a skirt, green tights, black shorts, and short hair, unlike Callie.
In Splatoon 2, while under DJ Octavio's influence, Callie wore an entirely different outfit than her Squid Sisters outfit. She wears a small black crop top, which easily exposes her midriff area with three pink marks that are fairly similar to the three marks on her Squid Sisters outfit, and also reveals a pink octopus-like tattoo around the navel area. She still wears earrings, but they now appear to be golden octopus-shaped earrings. She now wears shorts that are made of black leather, also wearing dark-magenta leggings, which sport a galactic texture. Her most iconic features are her hypnoshades, which were used to, as the name implies, hypnotize her into working for DJ Octavio. When she returns to normal and appears back in Octo Canyon, after Octavio is defeated for the first time, though Callie won't appear in Octo Canyon until after a bit, she wears a casual getup: donning a white shirt as well as a black undershirt, while also wearing a pink hoodie, and she also wears black shorts and a pair of brown heeled shoes with pink socks. She also once again appears wearing the earrings that she wore in Splatoon and also wearing a pink beanie with a star on it, the same star and pink beanie she wears when posing as Agent 1 in the first game.
In Splatoon 2, Marie wears a dark-grey kimono with a very distinct design pattern on the robe, as well as holding a parasol with the Cuttlegear logo on the canopy and also wears traditional Japanese sandals. Also, both Callie and Marie wear gloves, white collar necklaces, and white, chunky earrings.
In Splatoon 3, Callie and Marie now sport military-style versions of their stage outfits as part of their status as Agents 1 and 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Callie's is black and yellow, with her right tentacle of her hair no longer tied in a large bow on the back of her head with the left one, but instead hanging forward in front of her right ear while her left tentacle still is tied in a bow on the back of her head. Her gloves are black, she wears a grey bandolier across her chest, and white stockings. Marie's is white and yellow, styled like a coat, and she still sports a parasol that she can use to protect herself if fired on, shaking the ink off after she's sure it's safe to do so. She also wears black gloves like Callie, but wears black stockings to counter Callie's white ones. Both wear black shoes and boots to complete their ensembles.
History
In Splatoon, they usually host the news, as well as the Splatfests that they used to be the performers for before Splatfests ended in Splatoon and were brought back in Splatoon 2 with Off the Hook hosting them in place of the Squid Sisters. When Cap'n Cuttlefish was captured after Agent 3 defeated the third boss, they were called in by him to be the latter's guide and to help them find and retrieve the Great Zapfish. They will then reveal themselves to Agent 3 as the Squid Sisters, after overriding Octavio's music with their own, singing the song "Calamari Inkantation".
In the sequel, Marie can be seen standing over a manhole cover in Inkopolis Square, which leads to Octo Canyon, the single-player campaign mode. When entering the manhole, Marie appears standing across from the now-Agent 4 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, with her back facing toward the player, she then introduces herself as Marie of the Squid Sisters, however, much to her shock, Agent 4 doesn't know anything about them, probably due to having been more interested in Off the Hook since they were hosting Inkopolis News now in Inkopolis Square versus when the Squid Sisters did it back in Inkopolis Plaza. She also indicates to Agent 4 that, in truth, she is Agent 2. After Agent 4 makes their way through Octo Canyon, defeating the Octarians and their new war machines to retrieve the Zapfish in each area, Agent 4 reaches the stadium where many Octarians have gathered, only to find Callie there, now under the freed DJ Octavio's control as he uses the Great Zapfish to power his new DJ stage, the Octobot King II. Marie soon arrives with Sheldon to free Callie from the effects of the hypnoshades Octavio placed on her, and once reminding Callie of "Calamari Inkantation", Marie is able to fully snap Callie back to her senses, as Callie leaps from the Octobot King II to Sheldon's truck, changing back into her stage outfit from what Octavio put her in, and together, the Squid Sisters perform "Spicy Calamari Inkantation" to once more override Octavio's music while Agent 4 is supplied a modified Rainmaker from Sheldon to finish off Octavio and the Octobot King II. With Octavio defeated and the Great Zapfish recovered again, the Squid Sisters resume their music career, even with the new opposition with Off the Hook having taken over the Inkopolis News duty from them and being just as popular as the Squid Sisters.
The Squid Sisters, along with Off the Hook, reappear in Splatoon 3, with Callie and Marie sporting new attire alongside the original Agent 3 from the first Splatoon having taken over as head of the New Squidbeak Splatoon following the Squid Sisters' grandfather Cap'n Cuttlefish's retirement, becoming the new Captain. Off the Hook will appear in the Side Order DLC. After the New Agent 3 that Cuttlefish recruited falls with Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio into Alterna from the Crater in Splatsville following the ground being destroyed by a surge of Fuzzy Ooze, Callie, Marie, and the previous Agent 3, now serving as Captain, meet up with them and serve as their support as the New Agent 3 makes their way through Alterna to figure out where the Fuzzy Ooze is coming from and who stole the Great Zapfish and Octavio's Octarian forces to use for their own dark intentions after DJ Octavio admitted he was innocent this time compared to the previous two times in Splatoon and Splatoon 2.
Right before New Agent 3 can cross to the next area of the map from the first location where the Squid Sisters and Captain Agent 3 set up their base camp, the Squid Sisters have their first encounter with their successors after Off the Hook, Deep Cut, who make it clear that the Splatlands are their turf and only they have the authority to loot it. Callie is instantly taken in by them due to being famous stars like her, Marie, Pearl, and Marina, but Marie still has her suspicions of them, even after recognizing them as the hosts of Anarchy Splatcast, before Deep Cut bug out to deal with the New Squidbeak Splatoon later in the story mode as individual bosses for some of the areas.
Once New Agent 3 recovers the treasure that Deep Cut had been guarding in their respective boss areas, Captain Agent 3 uses it to clear away the Fuzzy Ooze around the Alterna launch pad. When Deep Cut appear to take back the treasure, threatening to fight the Splatoon to get it, Marie tells them they can have it as the Splatoon is finished with it and don't need it anymore. Surprised and touched by this act of kindness from Marie, despite initially thinking it's a trick and they went through all that trouble fighting New Agent 3 for it earlier, Deep Cut offer their thanks and ask to work under her, much to her chagrin, as Callie uses the opportunity to tease her cousin about it. When the true culprit who stole the Great Zapfish and DJ Octavio's forces is revealed to be Mr. Grizz, CEO of Grizzco Industries, having been cultivating the Fuzzy Ooze using the Golden Power Eggs the Inklings and Octolings had been collecting for him during Salmon Runs to carry out his endgame to terraform the Earth and turn all the evolved aquatic life, like the Inklings and Octolings, into mammals, the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut ally with Octavio, who comes to support them and stop Grizz, using the Calamari Inkantation 3MIX to power up New Agent 3's Smallfry Salmonid into Hugefry, while New Agent 3 and Octavio face off with Grizz in the Octobot King L3.Gs with sucking up Grizz's fuzzballs and then shooting the ink back at him using the Octobot's Ink Vac. Together, they slay Grizz and stop his endgame, saving the Earth.
Sometime after this, Big Man, under the alias "Ian BGM", collaborates with Callie and Marie to produce a new song titled "Liquid Sunshine". Unfortunately, Shiver and Frye learn of this, leading to their new song "Big Betrayal".
However, for the Final Fest of Splatoon 3, the Grand Festival, and the Splatfest of Past vs. Present vs. Future, the Squid Sisters joined forces with Deep Cut and Off the Hook to unite into the supergroup Now Or Never Seven to perform the song "Three Wishes" on the final day of the event, sporting new costumes for the occasion, and even taking part in the Tricolor Turf War on the Grand Splatlands Bowl map, where the attacking team who captures the Ultra Signal the second time causes the members of the Now Or Never Seven that support them to appear on the stage in back, dancing, singing, and firing Fizzbangs onto the map to try and give their team the advantage by the final whistle to win the match. After the final results were announced, Shiver and Frye realize that Big Man was right about how Splatsville and Inkopolis should get together more often as, having seen how happy the Inklings, Octolings, Jellyfish, and everyone else were at the Grand Festival, Deep Cut decide to look towards reforming the Now Or Never Seven with the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook again in the future.

Trivia
- It was revealed that they're Cap'n Cuttlefish's granddaughters.
- Despite their title being the "Squid Sisters", they're actually cousins.
- If the player talks to Marie long enough, she'll start thinking of insulting and bizarre things, such as thoughts that are off-topic, like her wanting "pineapple-free pizza from the future".
- However, Marie does think of one nice thing about Agent 4, thinking that they're "pretty adorable", possibly having a crush on them.
- The same thing happens if the player talks to both Callie and Marie long enough, but Callie thinks far nicer thoughts about Agent 4, including some off-topic things as well, like "Gotta remember to check the new script and memorize my lines when I get home..."
- The reason Callie went missing in Splatoon 2, was because Marie gained more popularity after winning the last Splatfest for Splatoon, which was essentially a battle to decide which Squid Sister the players liked better, aptly titled "Callie vs Marie".
- In the hero mode for Splatoon, Callie nearly revealed Marie's true identity to Agent 3.
- During the final boss battle in Splatoon 2, both Callie and Marie are seen wearing their iconic Squid Sisters outfits.
- It is theorized by fans that Callie and Marie are not squid but Cuttlefish. This is yet to be confirmed by Nintendo.
- Splatoon 3's "Return of the Mammalians" campaign seems to have disproven this, or at least make it highly unlikely, as when their grandfather Craig Cuttlefish is completely dehydrated by Mr. Grizz and is thus stuck in his swim form, he resembles a squid rather than a cuttlefish. Thus, both he and his granddaughters are most likely Inklings.
- For the Grand Festival Splatfest, Past vs Present vs Future, Callie and Marie wore new costumes alongside Pearl, Marina, Shiver, Frye, and Big Man as the Now Or Never Seven. Their headgear was available as promotional gear for players to wear and keep after the Grand Festival ended.
- Amiibo of Callie and Marie award gear when used in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, and following the Grand Festival, can be used to revisit the Grand Festival Grounds whenever players like.
