~ Big Man's introduction in Return of the Mammalians. |
Big Man is a major character in Splatoon 3. He is a manta ray who is one third of Deep Cut, alongside his bandmates Shiver and Frye. He, alongside his co-hosts, runs Anarchy Splatcast, and is also a host of Splatfests, events where players must pick a side based on a theme and then battle for their team in Turf Wars.
The single player campaign of Splatoon 3, called Return of the Mammalians, reveals Big Man works alongside Shiver and Frye as bandits in the Splatlands, and being one of the three secondary antagonists, along with the rest of Deep Cut. However, he, along with the rest of the trio, eventually make amends with the New Squidbeak Splatoon, and helps them defeat Mr. Grizz.
Character
Big Man is generally quite mellow and happy, always seemingly to smile whenever Deep Cut are on air, and seems to be overall the nicest and friendliest member compared to the cold, somewhat arrogant Shiver and the at times abrasive and aggressive Frye.
He also seems to be the least interested in fighting the new Agent 3, when compared to Shiver and Frye, with him, if you re-fight him, saying that he doesn't like fighting and is only doing so to make the other two happy.
He seems to only be able to speak in 'ay!'s, seen in the dialogue, which is translated for the player so that they can understand him.
Biography
Splatoon 3
Big Man and the rest of Deep Cut play a large role in the single-player campaign Return of the Mammalians, serving as the secondary antagonist for most of it. He and his band first appear at the end of the first site, introducing themselves and revealing that they are bandits who search for treasure in the Splatlands, claiming that it is their territory. Big Man appears again as the boss for the sixth site, called "Happiness Research Lab", where he guards his treasure and reluctantly fights the New Agent 3. After he is defeated, Agent 3 takes the treasure, and later the New Squidbeak Splatoon combine all of the treasure they got after fighting Deep Cut into a mechanism that the Captain uses to trim all of the lethal Fuzzy Ooze blocking the way to the space shuttle where Craig Cuttlefish and Mr. Grizz are located. Big Man and the rest of his band initially try to threaten to New Squidbeak Splatoon into giving them back the treasure, to which Marie just lends them it, saying that they're done with it. Deep Cut are shocked by her generosity and feel remorse for fighting the NSS, even wanting Marie to become their new boss. Later, Deep Cut appear once the NSS meet Mr. Grizz in person, whom reveals his plans to use his Fuzzy Ooze to effectively wipe out all life on Earth in order to bring back mammals. Big Man and the rest of Deep Cut help New Agent 3 reach the rocket that Grizz took off on. Big Man also helps sing the Calamari Inkantation 3Mix, which allows Agent 3's Smallfry to transform into Hugefry due to the melody having mysterious powers, being full of "marine-life energy". Hugefry fights Grizz to distract him while Agent 3 and Octavio vacuum up the balls of Fuzzy Ooze on Grizz's body, and then fire said ooze at him, defeating him and saving the world.
Sometime after the events of "Return of the Mammalians", Shiver and Frye find out about Big Man's solo collab with the Squid Sisters as "Ian BGM" and, angry that he's spending more time with other artists and not sharing the profits, jealously beat him up while Big Man tries to explain he just wants to help Inkopolis and Splatlands artists get along. These events are chronicled in the song "Big Betrayal". Later on when Off the Hook comes to perform in Splatsville, Frye and Shiver go off to confront them in the song "Suffer No Fools" though Big Man, being more receptive of foreign artists, stays behind.
Trivia
- He is the first Splatoon idol character to be male. He is also the first to be neither an Inkling nor an Octoling, being a species that has never been seen before in the series, a manta ray.
- His boss fight in Return of the Mammalians is a reference to the Phantamanta boss fight from Super Mario Sunshine.
- Big Man's alias in his collab with the Squid Sisters, Ian BGM is an anagram of his real name. In the different localizations, this alias is changed to be an anagram of Big Man's localized name instead.
- According to the Wizards VS Knights VS Ninjas Halloween Splatfest, Big Man had an edgy teenager phase where he'd wear a ninja mask to school.
- In the Portuguese localisation of Splatoon 3, Big Man doesn't speak in 'ay's and instead has perfect grammar. As Big Man's theming is heavily based off Brazilian culture, which is a country that speaks mainly Portuguese, it's possible that the language Big Man speaks in other localisations is just the Splatoon universe's analogue for Portuguese.
