Dee Jay

Are my moves too much for you, 'mon?
~ Dee Jay's first quote to defeated opponents.

Dee Jay is a supporting character in the Street Fighter series.

Dee Jay is the only character in the series to be designed by Capcom USA. He was designed by James Goddard, who modeled Dee Jay after martial arts film star and Tae Bo creator, Billy Blanks. Dee Jay's braided mohawk also resembles Blanks's role as Khan in The King of the Kickboxers. He is a Jamaican Kickboxer as well as a break dancer and recording artist.

Biography

Dee Jay is a Jamaican kickboxer who fights with musical rhythm and is known as the "Southern Comet". During the events of Street Fighter Alpha 3, he anonymously challenged and defeated Adon, who uses rival kickboxing style Muay Thai. After defeating him, Dee Jay set his sights on The God of Muay Thai, Sagat. Sagat, now a Shadaloo enforcer for M. Bison, didn't take the cheerful Jamaican seriously. Dee Jay managed to defeat Sagat, adding to Sagat's losing streak at the time. After Dee Jay's victory over Sagat, M. Bison took an interest in him and offered him a position in Shadaloo, but Dee Jay refused. After the tournament, Dee Jay returned to Jamaica and created some new music that was inspired from his earlier battles. His new tunes caught the ear of a record producer, who eventually offered Dee Jay a record deal.

By the time of Super Street Fighter II, Dee Jay was a music sensation. He entered the second World Warrior tournament to find some new rhythm for his next album. How far he got in tournament is unknown, but he did find the rhythm he was looking for and his new record was a smash hit. In Street Fighter IV, Dee Jay was feeling restless, so he took a break from music to test his fighting abilities by participating in S.I.N.'s tournament. During the tournament, Dee Jay met Rufus, whom he found to have interesting "rhythm" in his voice and belly. He didn't do much else during the tournament, but he was seen fighting one of the Seth dolls.

In Street Fighter 6, Dee Jay initially began his career as a musician and quickly rose to global fame thanks to his passion and rhythm. He then begins his kickboxing after discovered "martial rhythm" that dwells in the "very spirit" of street fighting. Thus, Dee Jay decided to pursue both the music and martial art careers together by create "a fusion of battle and beats" to fuel his musical inspiration and fighting spirit.

The scene then cuts into Dee Jay sitting on a bench and using his smartphone, apparently struggle to come up with a lyric of his new song. Suddenly, Kimberly appears from behind and suggests a lyric, much to Dee Jay's delight. Kimberly then asks if the musician is working on a new song, in which Dee Jay confirms. Despite each other for the first time, Dee Jay immediately offers Kimberly an autograph, to which Kimberly declined as she decided to ask for a battle with him instead. Pleased to meet a fighter who recognize his dual talents, Dee Jay accepts the challenge, as he wanted to "get some creative juices flowing".

After the battle, Dee Jay headed back to his recording room. Happy to finally get an inspiration for a new song thanks his new "ninja friend". He praises Kimberly's fighting skill as being able to make him feel "a rhythm this fresh" that he hasn't experienced for the long time, and is looking forward to fight "a new kid on the block bringin' fresh new energy" again.

Appearance

Dee Jay has a large, muscular physique. He wears orange loose drawstring pants with black sides and yellowish-white lettering that reads "MAXIMUM" and orange sparring gloves. His hairstyle is a braided mohawk, with a letter "M" cut on each side of his head. Dee Jay is also seen in the anime movie and some artwork with a Caribbean chain necklace.

In Street Fighter 6, Dee Jay's dreadlocks had grown into shoulder-length and wears a light red headband. He wears a red, yellow and black open mini jacket with green fern designs. His pants are now green with cross black and yellow linings and wears beach sandals rather than in barefoot. Dee Jay's fingerless gloves are yellow and red with two white linings. The color scheme of his pants resembles the color of the Jamaican flag and the color scheme of his mini jacket nearly resembles the signature colors used by the late Jamaican singer, Bob Marley.

Abilities

Dee Jay's kickboxing (SF6)

Dee Jay is an accomplished and experienced kickboxing champion, who entered many tournaments around the globe in representation of Jamaica, including the second and third world tournaments. He is also an extremely capable singer and dancer, whose albums have all gone gold. He reached new heights of success after mixing martial arts and music into a single product, evolving his fighting style accordingly and always composing new songs inspired by the rhythm of the fights he partakes in and the opponents he faces.

Personality

Your problem is you don't have any rhythm!
~ Dee Jay's second quote to defeated opponents

Dee Jay is generally a good-natured, cheerful, happy-go-lucky man who loves fighting, dancing and composing rhythms. In most of his in-game poses, artworks and pictures he is sporting a huge smile and making a thumbs-up hand gesture. He tends to always see the positive side of everything in life, being consistently happy and rarely getting upset, angry or sad even under the worst circumstances. However, despite his laid-back attitude, Dee Jay does not tolerate belligerent troublemakers at his performances, literally kicking them out if necessary.

Dee Jay has also shown to be a ladies' man, flirting with women yet treating them fairly. He seems to prefer women who can fight and match him.

Other Media

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie

Dee Jay plays a minor role in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. Here, he beats up a few punks causing trouble at a nightclub before being warned by Guile and Chun-Li that he is being monitored by Shadaloo, which he does not believe until Chun-Li destroys one of their cyborgs in front of him.

1995 cartoon

Dee Jay also appeared in the Street Fighter 1995 cartoon but his role is minimal. He serves as the team's helicopter pilot. Likewise, he is a friendly and capable fighter (and he isn't seen using computers). Yet, in "Demon Island", he is shown to be quite easily angered (a trait that fits more with Balrog) and he also seems to have his own gym in the episode.

Super Smash Bros.

Dee Jay's stage them A and B appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as soundtracks, he also appears as a novice-ranked primary grab-type spirit. His spirit battle is a stamina battle against four Diddy Kong who favors side specials on the frisbee dog park portion of Wuhu Island with reduced jump powers.
