~ ROB 64 |
ROB 64, and sometimes ROB the Robot, is a character from the Star Fox series. He is the robotic operator of Star Fox team's mothership, the Great Fox. ROB has the ability to completely control the Great Fox, technically making the ship fully autonomous. He is also networked to the ship's main computers, allowing ROB to process any information requested by the Star Fox Team. ROB can also use the ship's transfer device to send vehicles and items to Star Fox team members in the field.
Personality and Traits
ROB 64 was programmed to help the Star Fox team out by sending necessities when they are needed. Up until Adventures he is sometimes a jokester, such as pointing out Fox's temperature around Krystal out loud, indicating his new character. When the Aparoids attacked the Lylat System, ROB returned to his usual characteristics seen in Star Fox 64, remaining on board the Great Fox to assist Peppy Hare. ROB doesn't speak unless it was necessary for him to do so. When the Star Fox team disbanded and the new Great Fox was purchased in place of the one that was destroyed during the Aparoid Invasion, ROB underwent changes to get hardwired to the new Great Fox, which he gains the sarcasm chip. He was the only one not to leave the team at all, besides Fox, another addition to a sort of loyalty. There he will inform Fox about the fuel limit, in which Fox replies that ROB will take his place in case something happens to him, who replies with a laugh asking if that was a joke. ROB followed whoever was left on board the Great Fox and meets Peppy's daughter Lucy Hare, who he possibly had feelings for when he states that he'll do anything for her, but tells her to disregard his last comment, which she failed to notice anyway. This sense of loyalty may be down to serving with her father Peppy and even surviving the Great Fox's destruction on the Aparoid Homeworld.
Appearance
In his first appearance, ROB's "head" appears only on the communications channel and lacks any official artwork in Star Fox 64, which in the original was silver, but gold in the 3DS remake. The fact that he was developed in conjunction with Great Fox and was hard-wired to the ship's primary computer may mean he was not a full bodied robot but an A.I. Later games have ROB 64 as a human-like robot with his head is oval and is is light yellow and gray, and he has a rectangular red visor with mechanical limbs that allows him to move actively on the Great Fox's bridge and access various controls more proficiently.
History
Main Timeline
Creation
Before Fox's Star Fox team was formed, ROB 64 was originally created by Space Dynamics Co Ltd, along with the Great Fox under the watch of James McCloud. ROB and Great Fox's constructions remained incomplete when James disappeared. However, once James's son Fox McCloud reformed the team and received his father's orders, ROB was finally prepared to serve the second Star Fox team, consistently staying on board the now completed Great Fox.
Sometime before the Lylat Wars began, when Fox gained leadership over Star Fox, ROB was hardwired into the Great Fox, which allowed him to become the automatic controller and pilot. He has assisted in many of their missions, and would only provide backup for the team, if the Arwings could not easily take down a target. He befriended the members early on, and is especially close to Slippy Toad, which helps with the recharging of ROB's proton packs on a regular basis.
Lylat Wars
ROB played a critical role in the Lylat Wars, since he was the one who caught on to the emergency distress call that General Pepper sent to the Star Fox team. At the introduction of the Meteo asteroid field, ROB used the Great Fox's main guns and blasted open a pathway for the team, while also providing Fox a Smart Bomb to help. At Katina, ROB only sends in more supplies. In Sector Y, he provided further backup and gave Fox supplies again. In the mission on Fichina, ROB reported that there was a bomb planted in the base (much to Fox's annoyance) immediately before Star Wolf appears, and displayed the countdown time limit to detonation whilst continuing to drop off more supplies to Fox. At Aquas, ROB brought the lower half of the Great Fox underwater, to deploy the Blue-Marine Fox was driving in and gave supplies. On Solar, where the extreme heat is depleting the shields of their Arwings, which he provides more supplies to the team more often to keep them airborne. Then, in Sector X, he destroyed some of the rubble so he could pass in and drop off supplies. Should Slippy be swatted away by Spyborg, ROB had to receive data to find Slippy which he reported that he was stranded on Titania. This time, instead of remaining behind, he went further ahead of the team to search for Slippy and soon found him. At Zoness, he again sent Fox supplies like normal, but could not actively partake in battle to take out the beacons because the Great Fox's presence would make the risk of being spotted even greater.
At Macbeth, he helped out in seeking the Forever train's destination and dropped more supplies. In Sector Z, while passing through the debris field, the Great Fox became a target by Copperhead missiles; which it will either destroy the Great Fox's wing and send them to Bolse, or destroy them all and the Great Fox will head to Area 6 intact. At Bolse, he could not help much because of the size of the station and was only able to do what he normally does best. Near the end of the road, at Area 6, ROB contributes further by dropping supplies when necessary and gave cover fire to destroy many of the battle cruisers with Great Fox's powerful laser cannons, tearing through the defenses of the Harlocks and Zerum Class battleships. ROB also brings the Great Fox low at Venom to back up the team and drop off bombs as usual, but he unable to help in the fight against Golemech because the ship was far too big for the temple's smaller entrance. He was also only able to drop life-saving items during the fight with Star Wolf's Wolfen II ships and could only watch helplessly as Fox plunged to fight Andross. After Fox destroyed Andross, ROB brings the team back to Corneria, and notifies Fox that the Great Fox is getting ready to leave, and then flew off into the sunset after they board their Arwings.
Titania Incident
ROB 64 plays a somewhat smaller role as he intercepted the Hot Rodders' SOS signal on Titania and flew into orbit, while the team went down to investigate what was happening. Later, ROB was given the orders by Peppy to deploy the Landmaster with Slippy as the pilot onto Titania, to find out whether Captain Shears had any ulterior motives after an incident where Fox and Falco got into a dogfight after a confusion. When hailed by the Hot Rodders, ROB was then told by Peppy to check out the files that the Hot Rodders had stolen from the research base. He then revealed that the files contained nothing regarding Andross's research, but rather everything about a cloning program to resurrect Andross himself. ROB then informs the team that Slippy's communication link was cut at some point, when Peppy realized that he unknowingly placed Slippy in grave danger and ROB spent the remainder of the mission observing Fox's infiltration of the facility to save Slippy. At the end, Fox becomes concerned for another planet named Sauria and sets the course for it.
Plight of Sauria
Eight full years after the Lylat Wars came to an end, and the Great Fox, including ROB himself were deteriorating and often suffered from joint dislocation, which had to be repaired many times by Slippy. ROB also granted them the information regarding the conflict on Sauria, the dinosaur inhabited planet that was slowly breaking apart, although he ended up short-circuiting, resulting in ROB needing assistance from Slippy as they arrived at Sauria's orbit. When the team is able to get their mission on Sauria from General Pepper, ROB could not use the Great Fox as help, as its weapon systems were not functioning, but he did transport fuel cells, and some Binoculars to Fox down on the planet, but with the ship's transporting systems being dysfunctional, instead had them accidentally scattered all over the planet than being sent directly to Fox. He transmitted data from Fox throughout the mission. In the end, ROB couldn't help in the battle against Andross due to the Great Fox's poor condition as wella s his own. He was ecstatic that the team finally got their much needed fee because he "needed some oil". He accepted Krystal in the team and could sense Fox's internal temperature rising, and said it aloud jokingly.
Aparoid Invasion
During the Oikonny Rebellion conflict, the now newly repaired and improved ROB has gotten more involved in many battles, with the newly improved and more powerful Great Fox. At the Battle of Fortuna, he took out many of Oikonny's cruisers and managed to track down Oikonny to the rebels' base on the planet's surface. ROB fought hard in the invasion. He was the first one to identify the assailant behind Oikonny's defeat, as an Aparoid, which Fox defeats and ROB sent data from the Core Memory recovered on Fortuna, and partook in the battles of Katina, the Sargasso space region, Fichina, Meteo, Sauria and Corneria. He then assisted Beltino in transmitting the data from the Core Memory taken back from Pigma Dengar on Meteo. At the Beltino Orbital Gate, he warned the team multiple times to destroy the Aparoid missiles heading towards the gate. At the battle of the Aparoid Homeworld, he and Peppy fought against the hostile aliens valiantly, but suffered damage from the Aparoids and soon got many of them on the ship. When the shield came up, he and Peppy took down the Aparoids outer base, and he and Peppy make a selfless sacrifice by ramming the Great Fox into the shield to break it open for the team to pass through, where they were presumed to be killed. They were among the voices that the Aparoid Queen used in an attempt to gaslight the team, which almost worked had that not been for Wolf's advice to not hesitate, but to just act. After the Aparoid Queen and the rest of her kind were finally vanquished for good, ROB and Peppy managed to survive with the ship's cockpit escape pod.
Anglar Blitz
The team had to buy a new Great Fox, but its armor was inferior to their previous one, due to the team members leaving due to various reasons. It is unknown about ROB's opinion on it, but he underwent changes to become hardwired to the new Great Fox, earning him the sarcasm chip. That said, he was the only one not to leave the team, aside from Fox himself. When the Anglars invaded and the Star Fox crew having greatly diminished by this time, ROB analyzed data from their ships and explained them to Fox and asked if Fox wanted training. If 'Yes' is chosen, he makes him undergo 4 training exercises; one is steering, two is fighting, three barrel rolling, and four is time limit. If 'No' is chosen, then ROB takes him straight to Corneria. There he tells Fox about the fuel limit, in which Fox replies that if he gets taken down then it will be up to ROB, who replies with a laugh asking if it was a joke. At the fight, ROB backs up Fox in the Corneria battle, and once it passed, ROB then explains to Fox that the Anglars ships are made of chrome that can withstand the Venom sea. At this point, Fox will be able to choose what path he can choose to take, which leads to different endings, but all of these events are non-canon.
Star Fox Zero
ROB returns in "Zero", acting exactly like he has done before in previous games, giving necessary supplies and stays on the comms like in "Star Fox 64". ROB's appearance is now a combination of his Star Fox 64 3D and Star Fox: Assault character design.
