~ Dixie to Diddy Kong in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. |
Dixie Kong is the tritagonist of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise.
She is Diddy Kong's girlfriend and Tiny Kong's older sister. Also, she is the cousin of Chunky Kong and Kiddy Kong. Dixie Kong appears in almost all Donkey Kong games and in some Mario spin-off titles. Although Candy Kong was the first female Kong to appear, Dixie was the first female Kong to be playable.
In Japanese, she's voiced by Kahoru Sasajima in the video games and Becky in the TV show, and by Stevie Vallance in the English version of the TV show.
Appearance
Dixie is an ape with green eyes, beige skin, brown fur and blonde hair that she wears in a single huge ponytail. For clothing, Dixie wears round green earrings, a pink beret and a sleeveless pink shirt which is tied up to presumably reduce it's length. Her earlier designs also depicted Dixie wearing purple eyeshadow, pink bands on her head, elbows and knees, and her beret had on it a small golden logo of the game developers Rare Ltd.. However, Dixie's more recent designs remove these features. Instead giving her beige eyelids and made her brown fur a somewhat brighter tone in color.
Biography
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
This game serves as Dixie's debut in the series, in which she co-stars along with Diddy Kong. The story follows the two of them as they set out to Crocodile Isle, the Kremling's home, to rescue Donkey Kong, who has been kidnapped by King K. Rool under his alias Kaptain K. Rool, and demanded that they give up their banana hoard in exchange for releasing him. While Cranky suggests they give up the hoard, Diddy knows that's the last thing Donkey Kong would want after all the trouble they went to get it back in the last game, so the two of them set out together. Though the two of them have to fight through many Kremlings and a wide variety of other enemies across multiple areas of enemy territory, they eventually make it to Crocodile Isle where they fight Kaptain K. Rool They emerge victorious and free Donkey Kong, who punches K. Rool out of the Flying Krock and sends him into the sea. After this, he relocates himself to The Lost World, but Diddy and Dixie manage to defeat him a second time, after which K. Rool ends up clogging the energy flow in Krocodile Kore, which causes Crocodile Isle to sink into the seas, something witnessed by the trio of Kongs. However, Kaptain K. Rool manages to escape.
For the most part, Dixie plays very similarly to Diddy, only she's a little slower and she has the unique Helicopter Twirl ability, which is essential due to allowing the duo to be able to cross large gaps.
Donkey Kong Land 2
This game marks Dixie's debut in a handheld game. Its plot is pretty much identical to Donkey Kong Country 2; Kaptain K. Rool manages to revive Crocodile Isle after it was sunk and lures Donkey Kong into a trap, with it once again falling to Diddy and Dixie to save him. They manage to make it through many of the same obstacles and enemies to each the island and once again defeat Kaptain K. Rool. This time, however, Crocodile Isle blows up and is destroyed for good. Kaptain K. Rool also isn't seen escaping this time, leading the Kongs to assume he may have perished this time.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
This time around, as the title indicates, Dixie is promoted to being the main lead character, along with her baby cousin Kiddy Kong. The story kicks off with Donkey and Diddy Kong heading off to the Northern Kremisphere to take a vacation, but when they end up being gone for longer than expected, Dixie decides to travel there herself to find them and make sure they're okay. Early in the game, however, Funky Kong forces her to babysit her cousin Kiddy Kong since he doesn't want to do it himself, but despite being a handful in some ways, Kiddy proves himself to be a helpful companion in other ways, and Funky gives them support by supplying them with vehicles to traverse the land.
Over the course of the game, the duo discovers a new group of Kremlings, who appear to be led by a robot named KAOS. However, when they confront and destroy KAOS, they discover that the robot was actually being controlled by none other than King K. Rool, who this time, is going by the alias Baron K. Roolenstein, and had captured Donkey and Diddy Kong to use them to power KAOS, who are set free after Dixie and Kiddy destroy it. The pair subsequently discover the secret world Krematoa, a sunken volcano, and are helped by Boomer, an exiled member of the Brothers Bear, who allows them to access it in exchange for bringing him Bonus Coins. After finding five cogwheels and giving all of them to Boomer, he puts them in a machine and activates Krematoa, which reveals K. Rool's submarine, the Knautilus. The duo fights K. Roolenstein on it again and defeat him, but he manages to escape again.
In the aftermath of this, the duo can get a gyrocopter from Funky in exchange for finding all the DK Coins. It is after this that they find a creature called the Banana Bird Queen in the clouds, who has been imprisoned in a barrier by K. Roolenstein. She tells them that she can only be freed if they find all her children and return them to her, so they set out to do this. After successfully finding and returning all of them to her, the queen and her children manage to take down the barrier by signing, after which Dixie and Kiddy team up with the queen to pursue K. Roolenstein, who is fleeing in a hovercraft. The queen drops a giant eggshell on him, which the duo land and repeatedly knock on, much to K. Rool's irritation.
Donkey Kong Land III
Like its predecessor, Donkey Kong Land III has a very similar plot to Donkey Kong Country 3, but it's not exactly the same either. Likewise, while the worlds and levels have similar environments, they still have their own unique layouts. In this handheld game, Donkey and Diddy Kong head off without Dixie to discover the Lost World since there is a contest being held and prizes being offered to whoever can find it first. Therefore, Dixie teams up with Kiddy and sets out to find it herself. However, it turns out that Baron K. Roolenstein and his Kremlings are also adamantly searching for it. In the end, the duo manages to discover the Lost World and defeat K. Roolenstein again.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Dixie is first seen celebrating Donkey Kong's birthday along with Diddy and Cranky, which gets interrupted when Donkey Kong Island is taken over by a tribe of snow Vikings known as the Snowmads, whose leader, Lord Fredrik, uses a special horn to summon an ice dragon to freeze the island, as well as fierce frozen winds that blow the Kongs off the island. However, the Kongs travel across five other islands that the Snowmads' forces are on and manage to defeat all of the foot soldiers and bosses that they encounter before they eventually make it back to Donkey Kong Island. Going through the frozen fortress, the Kongs eventually confront the leader of the Snowmads, Lord Fredrik in the depths of the frozen volcano. The Kongs defeat Lord Fredrik in a final battle, and Donkey Kong unleashes a flurry of punches, which sends him flying through the roof of his ship. Exiting the ship, the Kongs watch as Lord Fredrik crashes into the remaining Snowmad ships, destroying them and defeating the entire Snowmad tribe. Donkey Kong then notices that Lord Fredrik dropped his horn during his fall, and catches and blows into it. This creates a trail of flowers that transports the Kongs to the bottom of their island and creates a warm breeze that gets rid of the ice and snow created by the ice dragon, reverting the island to its normal state. The Kongs then celebrate the liberation of their island by jamming out together on their instruments.
Throughout the game, Dixie can be utilized as a partner whenever DK finds a barrel with her initials on it. Her main ability is to twirl her ponytail, which acts as a double jump that allows DK to reach spots that are too high to reach on his own. Additionally, when DK fills up the Kong-POW meter by collecting enough bananas, like Diddy and Cranky, she can perform a special move with him that defeats all the enemies on the screen. When Dixie performs the move with him, all the enemies leave behind Gold Hearts, which, if collected when her and DK's shared health is already full, turns the hearts in their meter gold and increases the amount of attacks they can endure, essentially giving them extra health.
Personality
Dixie is unique in that unlike Candy Kong, she prefers to go on adventures with Donkey and Diddy and will not rest until K. Rool is stopped. She shows 100% loyalty to the Kong Family and is very courageous, never hesitating to face K. Rool or any other threat to her and her family, even if they're large, imposing and have impressive numbers in their ranks. She is generally portrayed as friendly, lively, albeit not in an overly boisterous way, and upbeat, making her personality fairly similar to her boyfriend, Diddy's.
Powers and Abilities
Apart from being swift and nimble like Diddy is, she can also spin her ponytail like a helicopter to levitate in the air for at least a temporary period of time, allowing her to both slow her descent to the ground and boost her jumps.
