Mega Man X (in Japanese: ロックマンX, Rockman X), better known simply as X, is the titular main protagonist of the Mega Man X series and the overarching protagonist of the Mega Man Zero series.
He is the first Reploid created by Dr. Light and the successor to the original Mega Man. After being found by a scientist named Dr. Cain, X joins the Maverick Hunters to fight back against evil, becoming best friends with his teammate, Zero, in the process. However, the Maverick Hunters are eventually betrayed by their leader, Sigma, who takes over the Mavericks and starts an uprising against humanity. X is then thrust into a years-long war, forcing him to fight against Mavericks and Reploids alike and test the limits of his pacifistic ideals.
In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Megumi Ogata in the first game, Kentarō Itō in Mega Man X4, Shōtarō Morikubo between Mega Man X5 and Mega Man X7, and currently by Takahiro Sakurai since Mega Man X8, who also voiced Rohan Kishibi in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Cloud Strife.
His English dubbing voice actors are Michael Donovan in the Mega Man cartoon episode Mega X, Ruth Shiraishi in X4, Peter von Gomm in X7 (who also voiced Frank West in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars and Spring Man in ARMS), Mark Gatha in X8, Command Mission and Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, and Ted Sroka in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and TEPPEN. The latter also voiced Dan Hibiki.
Appearance
As a more advanced successor to the original Mega Man, X's design is more detailed and mature looking. He shares his younger brother's predominantly blue and cyan color palette, but is taller and appears to be in his early teens (likely fourteen or fifteen years old, given his initial AI setting and height, whereas the old Mega Man was about ten years old). He wears a cyan bodysuit which covers his upper torso with a segmented chest plate with shoulder pads. His joints, such as his knees and wrists, have small black tabs on them. His helmet has cyan ridges atop it and above the visor, and a red lens sits on his forehead. The "ears" of his helmet and barrel of his x-buster are black around the edges with red lenses within.
Biography
Mega Man X series
When X was born and raised by Thomas Light, he was a one-of-a-kind human-like robot. Other than his predecessors, including the original Mega Man, X possessed incredible abilities. He was capable of thinking, feeling and acting entirely on his own without special programming, being closer to a human being than anything before (and eventually, after). According to Maverick Hunter X, Dr. Light sought to facilitate the evolutionary growth of robots in such a fashion akin to all living beings, and X was the key to such a world changing goal.
However, Light feared that, since X didn't have any moral programming that held him back from committing mayhem and destruction unabated and the fact that he had to achieve maturity like a human being, he could become a grave threat to the world. Therefore, he sealed X away into a special capsule that would test his circuits endless times and in uncountable scenarios to render him as mature enough to tell right and wrong apart. Apparently, this process would take more than 30 years and Light, already an old and exhausted man, nor did he have anyone who could properly carry on his work, would not live to see X leave the capsule and enter the world. He left a message of his warning on the computer in the lab he placed the capsule in, and ordered everyone that may find the capsule not to release the robot within until the testing were complete.
Maverick Hunter X, the 2006 remake of the original Mega Man X, however, walked a different path. The Day of Σ, an unlockable prologue OVA, showed Light actually speaking with X during his creation multiple times, whereas he sealed him away in the original game without first activating him. Furthermore, Light's intention of sealing X was different from the original SNES Mega Man X game. Instead of fearing he would become a threat because of his immaturity, he was more afraid of the future, in knowledge of a mankind who were not ready to live with a robot of such revolutionary magnitude by the time he finished his work, and fatherly concern for his final and penultimate project, that X would be swept up in an unknown world of such possible dangers and hardships that he would not live to witness. In his final days, Dr. Light recorded and expressed fully of his last wishes and hopes to the people of the future the day that they find X, and for the compassion to have X guide them to peace and happiness.
Though X fights with all his might against Sigma and his Mavericks, he is a pacifist at heart. He wants the war to finally stop so the humans and Reploids could coexist peacefully, like his creator had always wished. He cares deeply for the victims of the war and for his friends who've fought so long with him, especially Zero, whom he regards as his best friend.
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
In the PSP-exclusive remake that follows the same gameplay as the original SNES game, the story of Maverick Hunter X noticeably deviates from the main canon of the X series, namely how the events play out that completely juxtapose how the original story is. The biggest difference is how Sigma went Maverick and started his rebellion - in the original canon, it was the bout that he and Zero had that led to Sigma being infected and subsequently merged with Zero's Maverick virus, but it is shown in this game following a talk with the creator of all Reploids, Dr. Cain, that Sigma went Maverick completely on his own accord as he had made it his mission to take advantage of X's kind heart to further Reploid evolution, even going as so far as to kill Dr. Cain without any remorse after he had launched all the missiles stored in the Abel City Missile Base at the city. It was also shown in this game that it was X himself that gave Sigma his signature eye scars following the confrontation that the two had at said missile base, even though in the original canon, it was Zero who gave him the scars that he wore with pride.
In X's campaign in this game, it starts with him investigating a scene where a Reploid got crushed by a truck following a Sigma bomb destroying a bridge at Central Highway. As X tries to check to see if the robot is still alive, he notices a fragment of the bomb with Sigma's symbol on it, and shortly thereafter, he receives a call from Hunter Base that the explosion was caused by Mavericks. Putting two and two together, he realizes that Sigma is the cause of this rebellion and after navigating the highway infested with Sigma's minions, he comes face-to-face with his arch-rival and ex-Maverick Hunter, Vile, who in this game is opposing X out of pure hatred as opposed to his original SNES counterpart where he served as the second in-command to Sigma's forces. It is only after defeating Vile in his Ride Armor and being strangled with it as Vile stated his intention of defeating both X and Sigma that will lead to him being free to change the world that Zero steps in to save X and force Vile to retreat. Zero then tells X that he's going to stay on Sigma's trail and that X should head back to Hunter Base and take it easy. As X thanks Zero for saving him, he does what Zero told him to do and teleports back to the base where he is informed that large-scale Maverick activity has been detected all across the city and that the rebellion has truly begun. X then vows to put a stop to the Mavericks before going after Sigma.
It is also in this game that before engaging a Maverick in a boss fight, X has an interaction with each of them as he tries to determine why they went Maverick in the first place and convince them that what Sigma is doing is wrong, further demonstrating X's pacifistic nature with him wanting to resolve these conflicts with peace rather than fighting and him progressively getting upset seeing how these Reploids that he was once close friends with when they were leaders in the Maverick Hunter organization became slaves to a twisted warlord like Sigma, forcing him to resort to violence, destroying them one by one, and obtaining their weapons to aid him in his mission to defeat Sigma and put an end to his rebellion. A good example is his interaction with Storm Eagle as X expresses shocked confusion seeing someone like him serve Sigma, and it was explained in the manual of the game that when the rebellion broke out, Storm Eagle did the best he could do to stop Sigma, but the former leader of the Maverick Hunters proved himself to be superior in the end, forcing the eagle Reploid to surrender and submit his loyalty to him. Even before fighting X, Storm Eagle is the only Maverick who apologizes to X stating that he must defeat him. Another example is his interaction with the analytical-minded Boomerang Kuwanger wherein he bluntly states that he does not want to hurt an old friend like him, but Kuwanger states the irony that while X does not want to fight, he was still a robot designed for fighting at the end of the day.
Upon defeating all eight Mavericks, Zero responds to the Hunter Base with the coordinates for X to find Sigma's base of operations, Sigma Palace, to bring down the tyrannical warlord once and for all. Unlike the first game where the first stage of Sigma Palace has Zero overwhelmed and defeated by Vile, it got moved to the third stage, but the events still play out the same wherein after Zero sacrifices himself to defeat Vile, he leaves X with words of encouragement to keep going and fight to the finish, especially with how close Sigma himself is in the area. Also, just like in the original, if X had not acquired the Arm Parts, Zero will give him his.
In the final stage of Sigma Palace, X confronts Sigma, the latter of which states that he sees a new clarity in X's eyes and the former says that what Sigma had done is unforgivable. Sigma then says that the look in X's eyes gives him the impression that he seems ready to take him on, but before that, he sends Velguarder to test X's mettle, and X is able to best him. Sigma then states that X has the potential that he always saw in him and that the potential between the two of them is limitless. X, however, angrily deems that Sigma is insane, but the latter retorts that X's concept of justice was nothing more than a lie and that he was only led to think that. It is here that Sigma engages X in combat himself, yet X emerges triumphant.
Taking a knee and seemingly down for the count, Sigma compliments X, saying that this entire time the latter has been classed as a B-Class Hunter, yet was able to beat him before manically laughing as X angrily states that his plans end right there. It is here that Sigma, as a floating head thanks to the Maverick virus, ditches his body, which promptly explodes, as a long metallic claw emerges from the darkened background, grabs Sigma's head and retracts into the background, activating a new robot. As X runs to the center of the arena, the large metal plates in the background move to their respective sides as Wolf Sigma smashes through the back wall with one hand, revealing Sigma's final form in this game.
Inside the robot, Sigma states that it is not over yet and that he will make X understand the true potential of Reploids, and X angrily proclaims that he is going to finish this and defeat Sigma. With an evil laugh, Sigma powers up and engages X in the final battle of this game where he attacks with a flamethrower from the mouth, electricity from the palm and back of the hands, energy beams from the shoulders, and will occasionally smash the ground with the hands to try and crush X. The only way X can damage this form is to use the Spiral Charge Shot granted by the Arm Parts or attack using the Rolling Shield. Upon defeating him, Wolf Sigma falls through the floor as he struggles to pull himself back up, causing the palace to subsequently explode with X teleporting out of there at the last minute.
At a cliffside overlooking the palace, X watches as it explodes with the waves crashing against the side. The camera then zooms into X's eye as the credits roll, showing Dr. Cain's discovery of X in the capsule he was sealed away in and Dr. Light's warning regarding X - stating that X is a robot with special powers and a conscience that could help him facilitate a new age where humans and robots could live in harmony. While Dr. Light's warning is being played, X is shown descending down an elevator to the garage area of the Hunter Base where his and Zero's motorcycles are. As he boards his, he looks at Zero's bike for a few moments before driving off into the highway of the city. As X enters a tunnel and the credits finish, Dr. Light's last words are to never forget that X is the world's hope.

Marvel Vs. Capcom
X appears as a playable character in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite alongside Zero and Sigma.
In the story mode with the worlds of Marvel and Capcom converging into one thanks to Ultron and Sigma fusing together to create Ultron Sigma with the power of the Space and Reality Infinity Stones, X teams up with the heroes of both worlds to put an end to the villain's plan for universal domination.
93 days after the convergence of the worlds, and after a failed attempt to defeat Ultron Sigma at XGard, the combination of Abel City and Asgard, X and the other heroes retreat to the Avenger's Tower with Thanos, which of whom they freed from the underground prison he was contained at to get answers regarding how to defeat Ultron Sigma. As Doctor Strange undoes the restraints on Thanos, the latter of which states that they are doomed, but not by him, but instead by Thor, who got infected by the improved Sigma Virus, which can corrupt any living being into being a slave to Ultron Sigma.
As Hawkeye and Arthur try to defeat him, they are bested as Ultron Sigma hacks the monitors of the tower and make Thor teleport to them. It is also here that X inquiries about the Infinity Stones, to which Doctor Strange explains that they are cosmic stones that can grant the user of all six of them limitless power. Thanos, seeing the dilemma that the heroes are in, agrees to help them as he himself is bound the stones and knows their location, and as it turns out, thanks to the villains converging the worlds, they are scattered and are being used in different situations. He then says that they need to split up and get the stones before Ultron Sigma, otherwise they are doomed.
X teams up with Rocket Racoon, Gamora, Captain Marvel, Nova, and Strider Hiryu to go to KnowMoon to retrieve the Power Stone, which is being used to power the Gravitron Core and is being guarded by Hiryu's archenemy, Grandmaster Meio. Splitting up into two teams with Gamora and Hiryu setting out to defeat the Grandmaster, X and Rocket are tasked with retrieving the Power Stone. However, it is here that the two come face-to-face with a corrupted Zero, who is going under the name "Oblivion". As X states that Zero's core routines had been rewritten by the Grandmaster, Rocket responds with ordering Captain Marvel and Nova to get to the core while he and X take on Zero. Upon defeating him, Zero is free with X helping his best friend get back to his feet, the former of which not remembering what happened.
After Gamora and Hiryu take out Grandmaster Meio with a combined attack, X, supporting Zero is struggling to walk, regroup with the others as they make their way to the Gravitron Core containing a massive amount of the Sigma Virus. As Captain Marvel orders X to take the stone, the latter hesitates with him doubting if he has the right to even do such a thing, but this immediately gets cut with Rocket taking the stone. However, this causes the core to begin breaking free of its restraints. At a nearby monitor, X states that the Gravitron Core isn't just the power source for KnowMoon, but it's a weapon that is targeted towards the Earth. If it were to crash into the planet, the entire world would be infected with the Sigma Virus.
During this time, with Iron Man, Nathan "Rad" Spencer, Hawkeye and Thanos keeping watch over the Avenger's Tower, Dr. Light, via hologram, states that a superweapon is the only way to defeat Ultron Sigma as the Infinity Stones are too dangerous to be utilized by any mortal. After successfully stopping an attack led by Ultron Sigma to destroy Thanos, with the latter of which being able to crack the Reality Stone on the forehead of former, it subsequently made the villain vulnerable, giving the heroes a chance to defeat him. It is also here where all the parties of heroes that have split up to search for the stones return, with another problem being the Symbiote monster that was created by Jedah Dohma and M.O.D.O.K. that is about to attack the Avenger's Tower. The heroes utilize the power of the stones that they have so far to stop the falling core and Symbiote monster by making the two collide. While successful in destroying the Symbiote, the Sigma Virus was still able to infect the city.
Following a meeting discussing the new course of action, X, alongside a majority of the heroes, take it upon themselves to engage Ultron Sigma directly at the throne room of XGard as it was thanks to Thanos cracking the Reality Stone that left him vulnerable, while Iron Man, Gamora, Ryu, Frank West, Zero, and Thanos head to Sigma's Lab in Abel City to construct the superweapon Dr. Light proposed to wield the Infinity Stones to defeat Ultron Sigma, as Sigma's Lab served as the epicenter of the convergence, meaning that it is still intact and contains the technology that they need to accomplish this goal. As this was happening, Dante takes it upon himself to retrieve the Soul Stone from Jedah. As the heroes struggle against Ultron Sigma, the villain reveals that he knew of their plan to distract him while they wait for Dante to acquire the Soul Stone and that he had "betrayed them" by giving him the Soul Stone. However, this was revealed to be a ploy as due to Ultron and Sigma both being robots, they lack a soul, meaning that there is no way for them to harness the stone's power correctly. Unfortunately, this results in an unstable and unholy fusion thanks to the power of the Space and Reality Stones that kept the two villains merged, as they mutate into Ultron Omega, with Ultron attached to a giant Sigma head with floating hands.
As the two grab Dante and trap him, Spider-Man makes a grab for the Soul Stone from Ultron's possession, but the latter shoots an energy beam, destroying Spidey's web line and causing the stone to go flying, yet is nabbed by Thor, who has a noble soul, is able to undo his corruption and revert back to normal. He and X then team up to rescue Dante and the former vows that Ultron Omega will pay for what he has done to his people. After the two are successful in weakening the amalgamation and subsequently freeing Dante, Iron Man and his party return through a portal by Doctor Strange. Iron Man then turns his attention towards X and reveals the superweapon: the Infinity Buster, which could prove to be the key to defeat Ultron Omega once and for all with X placing his left arm through the cannon slot and inserting the Mind Stone in one of the four slots. As Ultron Omega angrily states that they have interfered enough, Captain Marvel and Dante engage the villain to cover X and are successful in taking him down and leaving him wide open for a finishing move.
Seeing this opportunity, Iron Man orders the heroes to pass the remaining stones to X. As Doctor Strange does so with the stones entering the remaining slots, Iron Man activates it - the power of the buster so strong that it forces X to turn into his Ultimate Armor. Watching him struggle, Doctor Strange tasks the other heroes to share their energy with him as he and Morrigan use their magic to guide the power to enter X, allowing him full control over the buster as he takes aim and fires, successfully destroying UItron Omega and causing the virus to disappear along with them.
Wondering what happens now with Frank West stating that time should rewind, the universes should separate, and all those that were killed will come back to life, Doctor Strange reveals it is not possible thanks to the Reality Stone being cracked, keeping the universes fused. However, it is in the wreckage that Rocket discovers the Infinity Stones together, but Morrigan says that the power of the Stones is too dangerous for any of them to use. It is here that Thor states that there will be custodians of the stones, two appointed to Earth, two to XGard, and two to the Dark Kingdom, to ensure that an incident like this will never be repeated. And it is at this juncture that the heroes vow that they will rebuild and honor the dead by protecting this new world together.
