Niko Evolution! (ニコエボリューション！ Niko Eboryūshon!)? is the 39th episode of Wonderful Pretty Cure! and is the 1007th episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall.
Summary
It's Halloween in Animal Town, and as people and animals roam the streets in costume, Komugi, who is dressed as a wolf, finds another wolf and chases after him. It's a quiet, gentle wolf who is loved by animals, but...

Synopsis
Halloween's has come to Animal Town, and Iroha and Satoru, who are dressed as rabbits, hand out candy to Ema and a cookie for Pon. Komugi, dressed as a wolf, joins the two and compliments Ema and Pon's matching costumes. Elsewhere, Mayu, Yuki, and Sumire, all dressed as cat maids, give free makeovers at Pretty Holic. As this happens, Niko watches over everyone and the diamond on her tiara starts to shine. Meanwhile, in his hideout, Gaou overhears the sound of human laughter and stands up.
Yuki and Mayu join the others at Iroha's house and Mayu compliments her and Satoru's matching costumes. Komugi shows them her wolf costume, which they don't understand at first, but Komugi's always wanted to be one. Mayu asks her why she chose it when Ookuma and Kanie, dressed as a bear and a crab respectively, scare her. Iroha gives them some candy when Saurwatari, dressed as a monkey, steals a piece meant for Kanie, and she chases after him. Meanwhile, Mey Mey is hiding in the bushes when Kanie sees him and she and Ookuma think it's just a person in a costume, since they all dress up as animals for Halloween. Mey Mey pops out and they fluff his wool, much to his annoyance.
Niko soon joins the group and they ask her where she's been, but she doesn't give a clear answer. She says that watching everyone smiling also makes her smile, and the diamond on tiara starts glowing again. Niko explains that the diamond is powered by everyone's smiles, which causes it to glow with Nikoniko Power. Though the Niko Diamond got damaged, she's able to receive lots of Nikoniko Power and become stronger thanks to Animal Town's citizens. Meanwhile, Zakuro arrives at the hideout and notices that it's empty, meaning Gaou has awakened.
Otsuru, Okame, and Oshika then arrive at Iroha's house to give candy and take a group photo with everybody. Mayu goes to take one of Iroha and Satoru when Komugi notices a wolfman in a black kimono walking through the stunned crowd. Excited to have found a wolf, Komugi starts following him. He continues to wander as he observes the humans playing with their pets while Komugi continues running after him. Once he crosses a bridge, Komugi catches up with him and shows off her wolf costume, but he ignores her. She then imitates a wolf's howl and he's admittedly impressed with her attempt, but he tells her there's no more wolves when she explains why they howl and leaves. Komugi continues to follow him, but she gets tired and turns back into a dog.
Back in Animal Town, Iroha is impressed they gave all the candy out so fast when she notices Komugi's missing. While the group goes look for them, the wolf brings an exhausted Komugi to the river so she can drink. After she has enough, he sets her down and suddenly, some of the animals become attracted to him. Komugi tells him she reminds him of Iroha, who also loves animals. She also explains to him how she's able to become human thanks to the Mirror Stone, and he's about to reveal his wish when Iroha and Satoru find them. Iroha tells Komugi she shouldn't run off like that, but Komugi assures her the wolf is nice like she is.
Then, the wolfman says that humans shouldn't be trusted and the same aura that the Garugaru and Gaogaon have suddenly surrounds him. While the others are alerted of the presence, Niko prepares herself. Satoru remembers that a wolf attacked Niko Garden in the past, and Iroha puts the pieces together. As Yuki and Mayu arrive, she tells then to watch out because the wolf is Gaou, who recognizes them as the Cures who have been foiling his plans. They attempt to transform, but he uses his powers to disable their transformation pacts and summon some shadowy wolves to attack them.
The Cures brace themselves for the attack, but Niko arrives and dispels the wolves. She then transforms into her human form, knows as Unicorn Niko, and the Cures stand in surprise. Niko tells Gaou that she had also believed that humans are cruel and untrustworthy, but the ones in Animal Town are actually caring towards animals and live in harmony with them. Gaou still thinks human will betray them in the long run, and Niko still tries reasoning with him, but he cares only about avenging his fellow wolves and punishing humanity. Niko then notices a shard of the Niko Diamond in Gaou's orb, which he took after attacking the Niko Garden and corrupted it so he can use it to get his revenge and turn even animals who like humans into his black beasts.
Gaou summons a dark cloud that strikes lightning on Komugi to weaken her as darkness consumes her. In Komugi's subconscious, her happy memories of Iroha are covered by the shadows as Gaou orders her to bare her fangs. She then wakes up, corrupted by Gaou's darkness and starts turning into a Gaogaon. The others, especially Iroha, stand in total fear as Komugi has become a monster and Gaou orders her to recover her pride and turn against Iroha. Iroha runs to embrace Komugi to get her to snap out of it, but the darkness inside stifles her voice and Komugi tries to drive her off. Gaou tries to imbue more darkness into Komugi, but Niko protects her and tries to get her to wake up, but Gaou claims that it's no use.
Iroha still tries to get Komugi to hear her when inside, a bright light suddenly appears and a wolf's howl is heard. This allows Komugi to finally hear Iroha's voice and break free from Gaou's control. She reverts back into a dog and says hearing Iroha's voice helped her to fight it. Gaou realizes he used too much power while Niko reverts back into a unicorn. The Cures' pacts return to normal and Zakuro arrives at Gaou's side, telling him to leave the rest to her. She finds a bat and turns it into a Gaogaon. Komugi turns back into a human and the Cures transform.
As the Gaogaon attacks, Wonderful scolds Gaou for turning animals into Gaogaon, but Zakuro stops her and summons a dark dimension. Since a bat can use soundwaves to tell where things are, it can attack the human Cures easily while they're unable to see it. However, Zakuro and the Gaogaon haven forgot to take into account that Wonderful and Nyammy have night vision since they're both animals, allowing them to see it. When the Gaogaon swoops in again, Wonderful tells Friendy where to summon her shield so it can run into it, while Nyammy tells Lillian to summon her net above them to trap it more easily. After Niko eliminates the dark dimension, the Cures purify it with Eternal Kizuna Shower, which has now been upgraded thanks to Niko's Unicorn Niko form.
After Niko heals the bat and releases it, she tells Gaou that's unacceptable to harm innocent animals as part of his plan for revenge. However, Gaou says he must, which makes Wonderful remember all the animals that gathered around him earlier. She tries to talk to Gaou, but he and Zakuro leave before vowing to destroy the human world, leaving Wonderful to look up at the sky.
