Bird (toy)

Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Birds are a recurring enemy in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. They first appear in Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Profile

Physical description

Birds are both the toy equivalent and a variant of Nitpickers. A Bird has an orange beak, orange feet, and yellow feathers. In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, a Bird is more clearly depicted as a toy, with metallic-looking joints under its wings.

Behavior

Birds fly around an area and attack by trying to drop eggs onto their target. In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Birds routinely spawn from nests and perform three complete flights across the level before disappearing off-screen. Once they spot Mario underneath, they drop an egg. In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, if a Mini Mario is underneath a Bird, it swoops at him, and whenever Donkey Kong takes damage, the Bird briefly increases in speed and drops eggs toward the Mini Marios.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong

MvsDK Nitpicker

Birds are encountered in Donkey Kong Jungle. If Mario gets hit by the egg or the Bird itself, he loses a life. Mario can deflect a Bird's eggs using his handstand, but the Birds themselves are invulnerable to any attack. In Fire Mountain, regular Birds are replaced by Firebirds.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis

A single Bird appears as an obstacle in Jungle Hijinks, during the battle against Donkey Kong in Boss Game 8. Whenever Donkey Kong is damaged, a Mini Mario can drop a Banana Bunch on the Bird to temporarily destroy it, although the Bird reforms shortly afterward. Aside from this, artwork of a Bird can be seen during the game's staff credits.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!

Birds appear in the boss levels Floor 4 Donkey Kong and Floor 4+ Donkey Kong, where they act the same as the Bird in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis.
