Trivia
- I-26 has the distinction of being the first Japanese submarine to sink an American ship during the Second World War, when she torpedoed the freighter SS Cynthia Olson on 7 December 1941, the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor.
- Among the IJN's submarines that served during World War 2, I-26 has the distinction of scoring third for the most ships sunk by tonnage.
- I-26 dealt the fatal blow against the USS Juneau during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. This sinking was responsible for the United States military creating the Sole Survivor Policy after 5 brothers of the Sullivan family, all serving aboard the ship, perished during the sinking. Juneau's wreck was located on 17 March 2018 at a depth of 4,200 meters (about 2.6 miles) below the surface off the Solomon Islands.
- After unsuccessfully attacking the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay off Leyte, she is presumed to have been sunk by USN destroyer escorts on the night of the 25-26 October 1944, as she no longer responded to radio calls. Extra depth charges on the 26th were deployed to make sure she was finished off.
- Shelled Estevan Point on Vancouver Island on June 20th 1942, the first attack on Canadian soil since 1871.
- I-26 is of the same class as I-19, making her the first submarine implemented ingame to be the sister ship of another existing submarine.
