“ | Now is the age of mechanical life-forms. We will rule over all humankind. | ” |
—Ziggy, Chapter 101 |
Ziggy (ジギー Jigī?), also known as the "Demon King" (魔王 Maō?) and formerly the "King of Robots", is a robot from Granbell, Shiki's surrogate grandfather, the former ruler of the Sakura Cosmos,[3] as well as the creator of the Four Shining Stars, Four Dark Stars and E.M. Pino; he was also a former pupil of Xenolith and was a member of the Oración Seis Galáctica. Ziggy was originally the captain of the warship Edens Zero and used its successor ship, the Edens One, alongside his Skeleton Army to conquest humankind.
During the battle on Lendard, Ziggy is revealed to be Shiki Granbell (シキ・グランベル Shiki Guranberu?) from an alternate universe 20,000 years in the future.[4] It is also revealed that he possesses two personalities: his original, kindhearted self whom Shiki viewed as a grandfather, and the evil personality of the Edens One's high performance AI.[5]
Appearance
Ziggy is a tall robot with a demonic motif, befitting to his title as the Demon King. He primarily has a silver coating with black around certain parts, such as his forearms, torso, and around his face. He has a somewhat cartoony, skull face, with a pair of circles on each cheek, and wears a gold crown with a dark purple jewel in the middle and two large gold horns protruding from either side. He also wears a tattered, red cape with the Edens Zero's crest at the back and gold trimmings with two golden jolly roger skull-shaped shoulder pads. Additionally, his chest has a large opening, where the sharp spikes make it resemble a mouth. His feet and lower legs are rather plain, consisting of simple shapes and a pair of wires from behind the knees to the ankles.[6]
After his revival, because of his years of inactivity, his body had become worn out, even losing a horn in the process, and moss grew over some areas.[7] After boarding the Edens One ship, he is fully restored to his normal appearance.[8]
After the Foresta incident, Ziggy transforms himself to gain a more menacing form, where his horns point more upward and have black markings connected from the top of Ziggy's head. His skull face is now more realistic, losing the circles from before, his crown loses the jewel and in its place is a mark that somewhat resembles that of the Edens' logo. The opening of his chest has changed shaped and appears to be housing an orb. His hands are now covered with a black coating and wears a double studded belt around his waist. His lower legs have become more detailed, now more like a human's and wears a pair of black boots. Additionally his cape now lacks the skulls and has buttons aligning the trim.[9] On planet Lendard, Ziggy briefly wore two monstrous skull-shaped pauldrons,[10] by this point his skull face is a mask; underneath it and his helmet his face is identical to Shiki's, albeit older, with a seam line running to his left eye.[11]
Personality
As he has lost his original memories, Ziggy was once a robot who loved both machines and humans, especially Shiki, who he raised as his grandson. He is known to possess a great knowledge of the worlds beyond the Sakura Cosmos and shared that knowledge with Shiki. He also taught Shiki about how he will meet and make new friends from different worlds and believed that friendship is important, and that they will always support him through anything, telling him to treasure his friends, especially those who would shed tears gor him.[6] According to Nero, Ziggy's knowledge of the universe gave him a reputation among others, who believed him to be a wise and intelligent.
After his revival, Ziggy supposedly regained his original memories and is now a ruthless tyrant that is determined to conquer and destroy humanity, with machines ruling over humans. Despite this, Ziggy has some humans as his allies, such as Connor, who helps pilot his warship.[7] However both Shiki and Elsie suspect something very odd with Ziggy's behavior with Shiki suspect that Ziggy most likely knew that he would go crazy base on the memories he see from Four Dark Star. They are eventually proven correct, as this evil persona was not Ziggy himself but rather the Edens One, who had taken control of Ziggy's body.
Synopsis
History
Ziggy originally started out as Shiki, having an identical history, until the events of the Aoi War on Nero 66. After his Ziggy set the bombs to detonate in 20 minutes, Shiki decided to stay and stop the bombs, which Rebecca stayed with him. However, his gravity compressing the bombs resonated with Rebecca's power to jump through time, which resulted in a spacetime distortion. In this distortion, the 20,000 antimatter bombs ignited in a extremely large burst of power. Because the bombs had enough energy to jump forward in time by 1 year, he and Rebecca were thrown 20,000 years into the future,[12] of Universe 3173.[13]
Their bodies were found by two robots along,[14] where he was still alive.[15] They were then transported to the planet Eden in the Sakura Cosmos.[16] Shiki was heavily injured and was placed in a pod, where the bots asked if he understood their language and for his name, which Shiki tried to say his name, but instead said "Ziggy".[17] Due to the severity of his injuries, he was placed in a robot body. When Shiki, now Ziggy, awakened and saw what he had become, he panicked and asked where his friends were, forcing the bots to shut him down. Later, he was told that they would rebuild him better once they have better parts. Because he cannot remember anything, Ziggy asked if he was human, he then remembered Rebecca and demanded to see her. The bots showed him where they kept her body, which was hung up with wires connected to her. Unable to accept the truth, Ziggy tried to save her, but the bots forced him to shut down again. A few decades had passed and Ziggy almost forgot completely who he was and lived like the other robots.[18]
One day, he visited Rebecca's body, but does not remember her anymore. He wished to see her alive, having heard that they were friends in the past. He is then summoned by the robot council who informed him that over the decades of researching, they had discovered the time-travelling capabilities of Rebecca's Ether. They informed him that Mother was no more and the cosmoses were on the path to destruction. They told Ziggy of their plan to restore Mother and humanity, as they believed the extinction of humanity was what led to the loss of Mother. Ziggy was still confused, which one explained to him the power "Eye of God", which could see alternate universes. They gave Ziggy the mission to use Rebecca's Ether to go to Universe 0, 20,000 years in the past to prevent the human race's extinction. They believed Ziggy to be the only one who could do this, having the heart of both kinds. When Ziggy asked how he would go back into the past, one councilor stated that they would build a ship, called the Edens Zero.[19]
They extracted the Ether from Rebecca's body and loaded into to the ship as Etherion.[20] At some point after setting out for space, the Edens Zero was consumed by a Chronophage. It sent the ship spiraling into Universe 1, where it crash-landed on an empty planet. Having lost all his memories except for his name, he named the planet he was on Granbell, after the sound of the ship's explosion. He repaired the ship and built robots. However, he failed to find any data about himself or his mission anywhere in the ship's memory. Not too long after, the planet had a town, which eventually turned into a theme park, the Granbell Kingdom. One day, he heard about Mother when a guest mentioned her. He then set off on the repaired Edens Zero to find Mother with the intent of restoring his memories.[21] Accompanying him were the Demon King's Four Shining Stars; Witch Regret, Sister Ivry, Hermit Mio, and Valkyrie Yuna; whom he supposedly built on Granbell.[22][23]
15 years ago, during his quest to find Mother, Ziggy journeyed to the Aoi Cosmos and visited the planet Red Cave. He entered the Temple of the Mother Beacon without the Four Shining Stars[24] and managed to survive the burning cave within the temple to reach the clue to find Mother on the far side.[25] At another point, Ziggy helped his old friend Nero, who wanted him to teach Shura how to use Satan Gravity, as the boy was incompatible with the Emperor's power.[26]
At an unknown point, Ziggy had built E.M. Pino and sent her to be repaired by Professor Weisz.[27]
When close to finding Mother, Ziggy discovered an orphaned boy named Shiki, which caused him to give up his search for Mother, returned to Granbell to raise Shiki as his adoptive grandson, and taught him his signature Ether Gear: Satan Gravity.[28] During his trip back he met Elsie Crimson and became her benefactor. Before arriving on Granbell with Shiki in a pod, Ziggy gave the Edens Zero to Elsie and requested her to give the ship to Shiki when it was time for him to leave Granbell.[29]
Two weeks after creating the Shining Stars, the Zero has almost reached Granbell. Seeing how happy Witch was with returning despite having no actual history there, Ziggy started feeling pity and guilt. He wondered if he was trampling over the feelings of the humans he found in the lab and what feelings the women had when they died in there. Hermit then asked him why he designed them to look like humans, jokingly asking if there were humans they were modeled after. Seeing them like this, Ziggy could not handle it anymore.[30]
A few days later, he released them from their roles as his Shining Stars. He thanked them for their service and lets them be free to choose their own path. He made himself believe that this was for the best and silently thanked for their short time together. Sometime later, Ziggy contacted the One's A.I. and asked for its progress. He asked it to cancel the ship's construction and the production of the male Shining Star Units. He thanked it for its service and requested it to rest.[31]
One day, while Ziggy, Shiki, and Michael were watching shooting stars believed to be a Dragon, Ziggy told Shiki of the importance of finding friends and traveling the universe.[6] He also taught Shiki that robots also have similar lifespans as humans, such as both only have one soul and memory of their past life that cannot be returned, even after their mechanical bodies are revived.[32]
Eventually, his robotic body broke down and he ceased to function sometime afterward, leaving Shiki to be looked after by the Granbell robots in his stead. Distraught, Shiki tried to repair Ziggy to save him, only to learn there was nothing he could do to save his adoptive grandfather. He passed away before he could teach Shiki the Gravity Comet technique. Before he ceased to function, however, he requested the other robots make Shiki leave them behind and send him to space by whatever means necessary as he knew that his adopted grandson would be all alone on the planet once their batteries died out.[33]
Skull Fairy arc
Ziggy's grave is visited by Elsie after she escaped the Interstellar Union Army in order to tell him that she had kept her promise. However, Ziggy's broken-down body gave small traces of a dark, evil Ether that was not familiar to her. Concerned over the strange Ether, Ziggy's remains is secretly monitored by Elsie's Fairy Drone.[34] At this point an unknown force takes over his body, bringing him back to life.[35]
Edens One arc
On the planet Granbell, Ziggy approaches Shiki and the others from behind, telling the machines of Granbell to rest in peace. Shiki and Hermit are happy to see Ziggy is alive, while Rebecca, Weisz, and Homura are confused as to how the previous Demon King is alive. Shiki then runs toward Ziggy in tears happy to see his grandpa. Suddenly, Ziggy uses his Ether Gear to destroy the landscape, much to Shiki and his friends' shock. He says to Shiki that he was wrong and that he never should have raised him or sent him to the skies. With a sneer, he calls humans ugly, foolish creatures and then says that the age has come where mechanical lifeforms will rule over humankind as the Edens One descends from behind him. He calls out to Pino telling her that she belongs with him.[36]

Ziggy tells her that she was created to follow his orders and that she has no will of her own. He tells her that if she joins him he will tell her why he made her. He then uses his Ether Gear to destroy more of the Granbell Kingdom.[37] After Shiki helps Pino return to her senses, Ziggy tells her to stay here and rot with her humans. He then proceeds to float toward the Edens One and boards inside it, as he does so he calls Hermit, telling her that he no longer needs her or the other Shining Stars. He then unleashes another wave of destruction upon the surface of Granbell.[38] After restoring himself back to his original appearance, Ziggy tells them that the Edens Zero is a prototype for the Edens One. He then says with the One now awakened, the Zero will cease to exist. He introduces the the Crew of Edens to the Demon King's Four Dark Stars, a more advanced generation of Four Shining Stars. Ziggy then says that he will leave Shiki the blessing of dying with his friends.[39]
After Killer note's of Valkyrie’s death, Ziggy remarks that it saves them the trouble of disposing her. Ziggy then orders a recently reluctant Connor to sink the Edens Zero. He remains quiet when Connor tries to reason with him, but he again orders him to sink them, which the latter complies.[40] When the Star Bringer of the Edens One is about fire at the Edens Zero, Ziggy declares that this is destiny.[41] However, Elsie’s Skull Fairy intervenes and manages to rescue the Edens Zero, causing Ziggy to order Connor to retreat for now and says that Edens One has no chance of emerging unscathed from fighting one of the Oración Seis Galáctica at their present stage.[42]
Foresta arc
After arriving in the Aoi Cosmos, Ziggy hacks into the systems of Foresta and broadcasts himself to the human and machine population of the Verdant Planet. He declares that robots will rule over humans and states that he will start with Foresta, where the machines started attacking the humans and enslaving or killing them, causing a huge panic on the planet that has lasted a week.[43]
In the Edens One, Ziggy notes how the robot uprising on Foresta was merely a test. He explains to the Dark Stars that he lost his memories and made an amusement park on Granbell. He went to search for Mother to retrieve his memories but instead found baby Shiki and decided to raise him. However, he declares that this was a mistake, his memories returned after he came back to life, including the reason he was drawn to Shiki and why he cannot let him live. Wizard asks if Shiki prevents him from creating a world ruled by mechanical lifeforms, but Ziggy declares him a threat to the entire universe and should not be allowed to exist. He transforms himself to have a more frightening appearance and declares that Nero's empire will be his.
Sandra arc
After watching Shura's public announcement across the Aoi Cosmos, Ziggy muses that it is the kind of Nero's son to react as exactly as he expected. When Wizard asks if he means about the robot massacre, the Demon King explains that if Shura wants to destroy all of the robots at once, then he has one option. He reveals the "All-Link System", the last resort allowed only to the rulers of Nero 1: The Temple, and this is what he has been waiting for.[44]
Nero 66 arc
X495 arc
Lendard arc
Edens One War arc
Ziggy remarks that he should have stopped him himself. Hearing that the One's A.I. had came to the conclusion to destroy Mother to wipe out the human race, Ziggy declares that Shiki will save her and that Void cannot destroy her.[45] Suddenly, space starts to warp around them. Ziggy is confused and hears Void claiming this as his win.[46]
He is contacted by Shiki through Pino, who he angrily asks if he erased Mother. His grandson says that Mother is fading and that he has a plan to save her. He is then asked to do Shiki a favor, distract Void so does not figure out what they are doing. Hearing this, he immediately punches his opponent, telling Shiki that nothing could be easier.[47]
Powers and Abilities
Ziggy was a member of the Oración Seis Galáctica, a group that is stated to be the cosmos's strongest warriors, being renowned for crushing entire planets.[48] He was made a part of this after the Oración Seis Interstellar determined him to be a threat to the universe.[49] Nero states that Ziggy's power is on an equal footing with him and Jaguar.[50]
Satan Gravity (サタングラビティ Satan Gurabiti): Ziggy taught Shiki his Ether Gear, Satan Gravity, which allows him to control and manipulate gravity.[51] Ziggy's mastery over this ability allows him to perform feats such as destroying an entire city around him without moving as well as levitating into the air.[52] Over time, Ziggy's gravity was able to destroy the surface of Granbell, completely altering its shape.[53] By directing his gravity with a raised hand, Ziggy was able to completely immobilize Jaguar as the powerful Interstellar fighter was charging towards him.[54]
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Comet (魔械流 重彗星 Makai-ryū:Jūsuisei): Though not shown, Ziggy does know how to perform this technique, as stated by Shiki; the latter having been taught it before the former's death.[55]
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Cannon (魔械流 重弾 Makai-ryū:Jūdan): Shiki mentions that Ziggy taught him this technique.[56]
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Tackle (魔械流 重身 Makai-ryū:Jūshin): While not shown, Ziggy taught Shiki this technique.[56]
- Gravity Drain (グラビティドレイン Gurabiti Dorein): Ziggy grabs his opponent and uses gravity to absorb the individual's powers, such as their Ether Gear, for him to use.[57]
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Inferno (魔械流 重烈火 Makai-ryū: Jūretsuka): Ziggy unleashes multiple blasts of gravity at the opponent.
- Magimech Attack: Ultimachina Impact (魔械流 絶機衝 Makai-ryū: Zetsukishō): Ziggy unleashes a great amount of gravity that explodes into a massive black hole that traps the opponent.[58]
Wormhole (ワームホール Wāmuhōru): Ziggy is able to use this Ether Gear after absorbing it from Nero. He is able to make wave-like portals to other locations, even distant planets, and pass through them.[59]
Overdrive (オーバードライブ Ōbādoraibu): As Shiki's counterpart from Universe 3173, Ziggy is able to enter Overdrive. When in use, he transforms into a heavily-armored, yet more menacing form with a new mask, larger horns, and armor plates resembling demonic claws. In this form, his gravity capabilities and prowess are powerful enough to completely overpower Shiki in their fight on Lendard.
Machine Physiology: As a machine, Ziggy is capable of surviving decapitation.[60] Should Ziggy's head ever be removed from his body, he can simply reattach it.[61]
- Immense Heat Resistance: Ziggy's mechanical body boasts an impressive degree of heat resistance, surpassing the bodies of the Four Shining Stars, which allowed him to traverse through the intense flames of Red Cave and return alive all by himself.[62]
- Mechanical Engineering: Outside of his powers, Ziggy is talented at mechanical engineering as he created various machines and weaponry such as the Four Shining Stars and the Four Dark Stars, as well as his warships the Edens Zero and Edens One.[8]
Edens One Transformation: After being taken over by the Edens One's A.I., by activating his Ether and having it spread across and throughout his body, Ziggy is able to transform himself to have a more menacing form, befitting the title of Demon King.[63]
Equipment
Edens Zero (エデンズ・ゼロ Edenzu Zero?): A large spaceship owned by Ziggy before giving it to Elsie Crimson so she can pass it on to Shiki.[64]
Edens One (EDENS ONE Edenzu Wan?): A large spaceship he created to be the successor of the Edens Zero.[8]
