- ―Former Inventory Description
Description
The Mercenary Base is an advanced tower unlocked at Level 150. It can also be bought for 1,800. It can spawn various units on the path within its range, which can deal damage to enemies or support other units. These units have varying strengths, spawnrates and purposes.
At Level 0, it spawns the Rifleman, which is a basic burst unit that attacks similar to the Soldier. It gains hidden and flying detections at Level 3+.
At Level 1, it gains the ability to spawn the Grenadier, which deals splash damage, which works like most other splash damage towers. The explosion is separated into two spheres; enemies in the inner sphere will be dealt 100% of the stated damage, while the damage in the outer sphere is decreased linearly. Additionally, its explosions bypass defense. At Level 6, the Grenadier gains defense, letting it take less damage from collisions and enemy abilities.
At Level 4, it spawns the Riot Guard, which has a very high amount of health and high defense but rather low melee damage — its main form of damage is collision damage. It can hit multiple enemies with its attack, though as it requires them to be very close to each other, this does not happen often. When walking, the Riot Guard will slowly build up speed until it is running. While in this state, colliding with an enemy will damage and knock back the enemy. After colliding with or when near an enemy, the Riot Guard will remain in place to soak up more damage.
At Level 5, it can spawn the Field Medic, which does no damage to enemies, but can support multiple humanoid units within its range, healing them and giving them a shield. Healing works similar to damage, as it heals units by 5 (10 at Level 6) every 0.208 seconds.
At Level 3, the Mercenary Base grants towers in its range a 10% damage buff, which gets increased to 20% at Level 6. This damage buff does not affect all sources of damage. Additionally, while the in-game stat box suggests it allows towers to deal decimal damage, damage is rounded down instead.
At Level 5, it also gains the Air-Drop ability for $2,500, which spawns in the units from each of the three queues on the tower itself. This ability completely ignores the regular unit spawnrates and instead has its own cooldown. The units can be air-dropped anywhere on the path, making the tower more flexible.
The Mercenary Base has a placement limit of three per player. Additionally, its units also have limits. There is a limit of 10 Riflemen per tower, 7 Grenadiers per tower, 4 Riot Guards per tower and 3 Field Medics per tower.
The Mercenary Base is considered a hybrid offensive-support tower that can be used in many ways. The Rifleman and Grenadier units provide solid damage throughout the game, while the damage buff the tower grants from Level 3 and onwards helps it support other high-DPS towers in the late-game. Additionally, the Riot Guard can be used as backup, and the Field Medic can support all units to give them extra survivability.

Strategy
- When first placed down, the Mercenary Base will instantly spawn the Rifleman, which fares quite well against early game enemies.
- This can make it useful for early-game, though do note it is quite expensive at the placement cost of
$2,000, which makes other towers much better while at a lower cost.
- This can make it useful for early-game, though do note it is quite expensive at the placement cost of
- Unlike other spawning towers, the Mercenary Base must be placed by the path in order to spawn units without the use of the Air-Drop ability.
- It is recommended to place the tower down near the back but also near other towers, as it gives the units more time to attack enemies and allows the Mercenary Base to boost the damage of towers.
- This is especially important for Riot Guards, as when they speed up they can become quite fast, making them get to the entrance quite quickly if the Mercenary Base is placed close to it.
- Do note that the Mercenary Base has a large placement footprint, which can be especially an issue on maps with little ground space, such as Forgetten Docks or Construction Crazy.
- It is recommended to place the tower down near the back but also near other towers, as it gives the units more time to attack enemies and allows the Mercenary Base to boost the damage of towers.
- The Air-Drop ability can be useful at quickly sending out units when needed; do note that you need to pay
$2,500 to use it, though it should not matter too much.
- The DJ Booth can be used to reduce the ability usage cost.
- You can quickly change the units in the queue specifically for the Air-Drop and then change them back to what they were before, making the Air-Drop send out the units you need while not affecting the unit queue.
- By using the Air-Drop ability, you can drop mercenaries on Flying enemies and deal damage. It is recommended to pair this with the Riot Guard during leaks to inflict the maximum damage.
- At Level 3, the Mercenary Base increases damage of nearby towers by 10%, which is increased to 20% at Level 6.
- While displayed with decimals in-game, the listed damage is always rounded down.
- This boost can be useful at boosting the damage of towers, though do note that not all sources of damage have their damage increased. A list of all affected, partially affected and unaffected towers can be found below.

- The Grenadier can be quite useful at clearing out hordes of enemies, as it deals splash damage.
- Because of this, it can also ignore defense.
- At Level 6, the Grenadier gains defense, which when combined with its health allows it to collide with a few weaker enemies.
- The Field Medic, while ineffective at dealing damage to enemies, can be quite useful at boosting other units.
- Do note that the boosts are only applied to humanoid units, which includes units like the Tommy Goon 1, Bomber Elf or Hallow Guard, but not the Humvee 3 or War Machine Sentry.
- The Riot Guard can be very useful at soaking up hordes of enemies, due to its high health and defense.
- Letting the Riot Guard run for long enough will cause it to start charging, which causes them to stun enemies on collision.
- Because of this, it is recommended to either have the Mercenary Base spawn the Riot Guard at the back or for it to be spawned at the back with the Air-Drop ability to give them time to charge.
- Letting the Riot Guard run for long enough will cause it to start charging, which causes them to stun enemies on collision.
- The DJ Booth can be used to increase the Mercenary Base's very small range to give more towers the damage buff, decrease its ability usage cost and reduce its upgrade costs as they are incredibly expensive.
- The range can be buffed even further by using Ranger, Range Flag and UAV to cover up most of your defense but keep in mind that consumables are sometimes banned, making this strategy less effective on certain gamemodes.
- Like other unit summoning towers, the Mercenary Base is very effective in maps where paths intersect, such as in Crossroads and Honey Valley, as the units will be able to target enemies from multiple different spots.
Trivia
- The Mercenary Base is the second tower to have six upgrades, the first being the Engineer.
- The icon of the Mercenary Base is a random unit that it can spawn, making it the first tower to change its icon randomly.
- The Mercenary Base is the first tower to have its placement limit change based on the player count.
- The Air-Drop ability is orchestrated by a Lockheed C-130.
- The Mercenary Base is the first spawner tower having defense applied to its spawned units.
- The Grenadier has 10% defense at Level 6 and the Riot Guard has 10% defense at Level 4 and 15% at Level 6.
