Pokémon are a group of creatures that are the central focus of the highly successful Pokémon franchise (which made its debut with Pokemon Red/Green in 1996 on Game Boy). There is a wide variety of Pokémon, specifically over a thousand, each taking inspiration from a variety of living things, including animals, insects, plants, and mythical creatures such as dragons. A Pokémon has at least one elemental association, known as a type, which often influences its moveset and abilities. The most well-known Pokémon and mascot of the franchise is Pikachu, a electrical mouse. Despite Pokémon being one of Nintendo's flagship series alongside Mario and The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon in general have sometimes, although rarely, made appearances within Mario-related media, not having anywhere near as many appearances as Link from The Legend of Zelda or even Samus Aran from the Metroid franchise.
In Game Boy Camera
This is the first time that Pokémon appear in media with Mario content, although both are referenced in the form of customizable graphics. The first time that Pikachu and other Pokémon physically appear in a game with Mario characters is Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64. The Super Smash Bros. series in general is the most notable instance of Pokémon appearing alongside Mario characters, let alone several other video game franchises in general.
In Mario franchise
