Car (obstacle)

Mario Kart

Cars are a recurring traffic obstacle in the Mario Kart series. They first appear in Mario Kart 64.

Description

Cars are the main component of traffic in courses taking place in a city, such as Toad's Turnpike, or courses with a busy road, such as Shroom Ridge. If a character drives their kart into a car, they spin out as if they had driven into a Banana. A car cannot be destroyed, but certain items can send them flying into the air, most commonly a Super Star or, as of Mario Kart DS, a Bullet Bill. The drivers are not visible in most cars, but sound of them make a honking sound upon being hit. Buses have a similar function to Cars.

In Mario Kart series

Mario Kart 64

White-colored cars are featured as the main obstacles of Toad's Turnpike, along with buses. The cars make the same engine sound as Toad's kart.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Cars are encountered as obstacles in Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City. Here, the three standard types of cars found are red, yellow and blue, all of which have "POW" as a license plate, and the only difference between all of them is their color. There are also the more hazardous Bomb-cars, and driving into one sends the racer flying upward in an explosion, just as if they were caught in the blast radius of an exploding Bob-omb item. Cars also have a unique variation, Mushroom Cars, which can drop a Mushroom onto the course upon being bumped into but do not spin out the racer, making them the only helpful obstacle in traffic.

Mario Kart DS

Cars prominently appear throughout Shroom Ridge and the returning GCN Mushroom Bridge, but with a more realistic design. The red, yellow and blue cars are based of a 1960s Prince Skyline (the predecessor of the modern Nissan Skyline), but each with minor differences.

A red car is the focus of Mission 4-3, in which Mario has to race one on Shroom Ridge. The red car moves a lot faster than the other cars.
