Introduction |
Grausam 「グラオザーム Guraozāmu?」, also known as the Grausam the Miraculous 「
Personality
Not much was known about Grausam's personality. He seemed to be relatively quiet, as he did not speak when confronting Macht with Schlacht. Despite demons being individualistic, he was very loyal to the Demon King and, by extension, Schlacht, as shown by him obeying the latter and making sure Solitär did not get off track when they sought out the Goddess's Monument in the past.
Appearance
Grausam is a tall, thin demon with two-toned hair cropped at his chin. His hair is light colored from his scalp to halfway down his face, where it transitions to dark colored hair. His horns resemble that of an ox, curving up gently at the ends but otherwise sticking straight out of his head. Grausam has dark colored sclera and a pointed chin. He wears a low cut shirt with loose sleeves, a black front panel with cords hanging loosely from them. He wears a necklace with many long beads and a collared tie. He also wears fingerless gloves. A white sash is wrapped around his middle.
Synopsis
History
At some point, Grausam became renowned for his abilities and rose to become one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. He became known as Grausam the Miraculous.
Before they fought the Hero of the South, Grausam joined Schlacht to persuade Macht to join them in the fight against the Hero of the South. Grausam served as insurance to guarantee Macht's compliance, as Macht himself stated that Grausam's magic was the worst matchup for him. In addition, Schlacht requested that Grausam wipe Macht's memory of the fight, as Schlacht had seen into the future and saw that Frieren would view Macht's memories.
While it is unclear what Grausam did after the defeat of the Hero of the South, it is known that his subordinates, such as the Remnant Zart, would travel through the continent and report any new developments to him.
Seven years after the Hero Party began their adventure, when Frieren was sent back in time due to the Goddess's Monument, Grausam was among the demons summoned by Solitär, along with Rivale and Tot. The four demons gathered by the Goddess's Monument with the goal of having Grausam take Frieren's memories of the future and then killing her.
Some time between this incident and the main events of the series, Grausam was defeated by the Hero Party.
Goddess's Monument Arc
Seven years into the Hero Party’s journey, Grausam the Miraculous arrives at the Monument of the Goddess with Rivale and Tot, where they meet up with Solitär. Grausam reports that they have lost contact with his servant Zart the Remnant, who had been monitoring the Monument. Grausam and Solitär then devise a plan to extract Frieren's knowledge of the future and eliminate her. However, Tot decides to abandon the mission. Grausam, believing that her battlefield lies in the future, does not stop her. The remaining three demons then proceed with their assault.
As Rivale engages Eisen in combat and Solitär provides covering attacks with her blades, Grausam uses his magic to conceal himself, and positions himself strategically to intercept the Hero Party. When the they rush past, Grausam reveals himself and casts his spell, Ansehelschella, trapping Heiter, Himmel, and Frieren in a dream. Heiter resists the spell with the Goddess's Divine Grace but is then attacked by both Grausam and Solitär. Himmel, though trapped in the illusion, manages to move and uses his other senses to fight Grausam and protect Frieren from Solitär's attacks. Eventually, Himmel cuts off Grausam's arm, dispelling the illusion. As Grausam prepares to resort to a fighting style he finds unpleasant, Solitär calls off the battle, stating that there’s no need to continue, now that Frieren has returned to the future. The two opposing sides then regroup. In a forest, Grausam shares the information he managed to acquire from Frieren with Solitär.
Abilities
As one of Seven Sages of Destruction, Grasaum is a demon possessing magic that surpasses humanity's knowledge and reason.[2] Macht mentions that of the Seven Sages of Destruction, Grausam is the worst matchup for him.[3]
Spells

- Mental magic: Grausam is able to alter his face and form with his magic, blending in the society of any era.[4] His magic is powerful enough to make the illusion imperceptible with reality and even deceive the eyes of Greater Demons.[4] It is implied that his appearance of a tall, young demon is not actually his true form, but rather another mask he uses to deceive others.[4] He can also make himself completely invisible and undetectable as seen when the Hero Party failed to perceive him despite him standing right next to them.[5]
- Spell to guide to paradise: Ansehelschella: Grausam is able to trap victims in an illusion that presents happy dreams that the victims have already given up on, leaving them open to attack. However, due to this spell being considered a curse,[note 1] it is possible for a skilled priest to resist its effects.[6] Some skilled fighters, such as Himmel, are still able to fight with their instincts while being under the effects of the curse.
- Memory manipulation magic: Grausam is able to read memories and remove portions of them.

Trivia
- "Grausam" means "cruel" or "gruesome" in German.
- Grausam ranked the following in the official popularity polls:
- 70th in the first popularity contest.
- 59th in the second popularity contest, where multiple votes per character were counted.

Notes
- ↑ Although Ansehelschella is referred to as hypnosis magic, Heiter is able to awaken from it due to the Blessing of the Goddess. Additionally, Grausam comments on the fact that Heiter must be an exceptionally devout priest to counter the spell and that the Blessing of the Goddess protects priests from curses. Thus, Ansehelschella has been categorized as a curse.
