Lake Korridor 「コリドーア
Summary
Thirty years after the Hero Himmel’s passing, Frieren’s Party is in a port city by Lake Korridor, waiting for the rain to stop to cross the lake safely. After waiting out the winter, Frieren asks a ferryman to boat them over, but they do not have enough funds to pay for the fare. The ferryman offers a request to find the Hero Himmel’s lost memoir in lieu of payment, and Frieren accepts. After dismantling the barrier protecting the abandoned monastery where the memoir was rumored to be, Frieren locates the memoir and offers it to the ferryman. However, the ferryman refuses to take it, as Frieren appears sad while reading it, and tells her that there are likely enough different valuable books to cover the fare’s cost.
Plot Details
Thirty years after the Hero Himmel’s passing, Frieren’s Party is stuck in a port city by Lake Korridor. After a week of waiting for the rain to stop, Frieren asks a ferryman to take them across the lake in the stormy weather, which he refuses to do. Frieren, Fern, and Stark briefly discuss alternative routes of getting across the lake but the strong winds, size of the lake, and neighboring mountain ranges make it impossible to fly over or detour around, so they decide to wait out the storm for a few months. After the rain ceases, they approach the same ferryman, but do not have enough funds to pay for the trip. The ferryman offers a request to help him find Himmel’s lost memoir in lieu of payment, as his memoir was rumored to have been left in a deserted monastery protected by a barrier on an island. Frieren is surprised that it was left in such a place, but accepts the quest.
On the lake, Stark points out that the lake feels like an ocean with entire fleets passing by. The ferryman explains that it is the peak season for transport of goods and people, and that there is a rumor floating around that there is a city in the north completely made of gold, but that he’s never actually met anyone who has been there.
After reaching the island, Frieren dismantles the barrier, and they enter the monastery, where there is a statue of Himmel and his memoir right below it. Frieren verifies that it is Himmel’s handwriting, and recalls the day-to-day experiences he wrote about. When Frieren offers the memoir to the ferryman, he refuses to take it, saying that Frieren should keep it as it was clear from her expression that the journal was dear to her, and that the other books would probably cover the fare.
On the way back, the ferry is attacked by a kraken, which is presumably defeated by Frieren's Party.
