Peaceful Time 「
Summary
Right after the events of the previous chapter, Fern and Stark go on their date together. Stark takes Fern to all the places Frieren showed him, including a market, street food vendors, a statue of Himmel in the town plaza, a dessert place, and an overlook of the city. Stark comments that Fern isn't having much fun, as she hasn't smiled all day. Fern admits that while Stark took her to places she'd normally like, it didn't feel like places he would choose. Stark admits that he had Frieren pick all the spots, and while Fern admits that she is a little disappointed, she is happy he put so much thought into the date for her. Afterwards, they sit together and talk about their masters; later, Fern and Frieren sit in the hot springs together, and Frieren notes that Fern is in a good mood. The next day, they depart from the Fortified City of Heiß and continue on their travels, this time with Frieren's hair in good-mood braids.
Plot Details
Right after the events of the previous chapter, Fern and Stark go on their date. Stark notes that Fern is wearing a different outfit than usual and inquires as to why. Fern reminds Stark that it is because they are on a date. As the two continue their stroll, Stark wonders to himself whether Fern has always been as cute as she appears to be. Brushing off the thought, Stark awkwardly suggests they continue walking, while Fern notices his stiffness as he denies.
Fern asks Stark where they are headed. Stark suggests checking out a market up ahead. Fern notes Frieren's frequent visits to the market. Stark explains that markets in large towns often feature rare magical items, accompanied by flashbacks of Frieren demonstrating a spell to him and Fern discovering a pile of strange items at the inn. Fern adds that Frieren had fallen asleep under the same pile of items the other day. Stark remarks that Frieren’s deep interest in the subject is a little scary, a sentiment Fern agrees with. The scene transitions to a short montage of Fern and Stark strolling across the market before they stop by a jewellery seller. Fern mentions a couple’s discount on a necklace, prompting Stark to bluntly remark that going on a date seems to be quite economical. Observing the items, Stark notes that most of them seem ordinary, and Fern responds that it would be more surprising if they were all magical items. Continuing their walk, Stark suggests exploring more places in the town since they do not do so often.
Another brief montage unfolds as Stark and Fern explore more locations, indulging in snacks, a meal, and visiting Hero Himmel’s statue before reaching the elevated area that Frieren had shown Stark. While overlooking the city, Fern remarks on the prevalence of Hero Himmel statues in every city. Stark adds that Frieren claims there are over a hundred poses for Himmel's statues, prompting Fern to comment that they might have made a bit too many.
Fern takes a moment to appreciate the serene and beautiful scenery. Stark, observing her, asks if she's not having much fun on the date. Fern disagrees, but Stark notes that she hasn't smiled once today. Conceding, Fern adds that while he took her to places she would like, it didn't feel like Stark had chosen them himself, despite the two finally having the chance for a date. Stark apologises, revealing that he asked Frieren to pick the locations. Fern questions Stark, and he confesses that he just wanted her to be happy on their first date. Acknowledging her disappointment, Fern expresses happiness nonetheless, appreciating Stark's effort and thoughtfulness over her.
Seated on a bench, Fern remarks on the peacefulness of the moment. She reflects that, as a war orphan, she never would have imagined being able to relax like this, with Stark agreeing. The two attribute this newfound peace to their respective adoptive parents, Heiter and Eisen. A short flashback begins of a young Stark seated at the dinner table as Eisen prepares a meal. Stark asked Eisen why he’d chosen to adopt Stark, and Eisen simply responded that it was what the Hero Himmel would have done. The flashback ends as the statue of Himmel is shown once again.
Later that day, Fern and Frieren take a bath at the bathhouse. Frieren notes that Fern seems to be in a good mood and asks if something good happened. Fern, continuing to smile to herself, responds that not much happened. Later, as Frieren's party depart the city and continue on their journey, Stark observes that Frieren’s hair has been braided once again. Frieren explains that those are good-mood braids, leaving Stark struggling to tell the difference.
