Alex Kidd (アレックス・キッド Arekkusu Kiddo?) is the titular protagonist of the Alex Kidd series and Sega's second mascot from 1986 to until 1991, when he was replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog.

Alex Kidd is a prince of Radaxian from the Planet Aries, and a martial arts student of St. Nurari.

Appearance

Alex Kidd is reknown for his red and yellow jumpsuit outfit, huge ears, gigantic fists when punching and large sideburns that frame his face. Depending on the game his ears are either pointed and elven like or round and monkey like.

In the 2021, Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, a remake of the 1986 game, he now wears a yellow scarf, has thick black eyebrows and his hair at the front is styled into a cowlick.

In the 1990, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World game, Alex temporarily grows taller after being embued with the light magic of the White Ninja, and changes from his usual red and yellow jumpsuit to a black and blue ninja outfit.

In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Alex wears a slightly altered version of his usual outfit, wearing a more Santa Claus inspired red and white jumpsuit, which was made to commemorate him being a free DLC character given to players as a gift on Christmas day.

History

Past

Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Initially Alex Kidd believes himself to be an orphan, living with his master and spiritual father, Saint Nurari atop Mount Eternal.

Alex had spent the past seven years atop this mountain learning to master an ancient martial art known as Shellcore; an ability that allows him to expand the size of his fists in order to shatter rocks with his bare hands.

On the day Alex was finally done with his training, he began to descend the mountain to meet back up with his master when he came across a dying man. The man with his dying breath told Alex that Radaxian was no longer safe, handing him both the Sun Stone Medallion and a map of Aries. Alex gave the man a burial and set down the mountain to discover the tyrant Janken the Great had invaded Radaxian, was turning the civilians into stone and had the royal family hostage.

After clashing with Janken's minion Gooseka the Slippery, a man who's head is shaped like a closed fist, Alex reaches St. Nurari who explains to him that he was kidnapped as a young boy by evil an evil man and is in actual fact a prince of Radaxian.

St. Nurari explains that Janken has taken over the country, and sets Alex the task of saving his kingdom as his final task from him. Alex proceeds to face off against Janken and his minions, and save his brother Prince Egle and his sister in law, Princess Lora, from Janken's clutches. After Janken is defeated Alex proceeds to locate the Golden Crown and reverse the petrification curse on the citizens.

Princess Lora informs Alex that his mother, Queen Patricia managed to escape Janken the Great, but his father, King Thunder was missing. Alex's brother, Prince Egle became the ruling monarch from that point on.

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

Some time later Alex heard a rumour about King Thunder being on Planet Paper-rock, the planet Janken the Great came from. Determined to find his long lost father, Alex set out to Planet Paperock, a planet where games of Rock Paper Scissors were life and death and only the strong survived to find him.

During his time on Planet Paperock, Alex clashed with several Janken masters before coming across the six armed ruler of Paper-rock, Ashra, engaging in battle with Alex before being defeated. Upon Ashra's defeat, Alex finds that his father, King Thunder, is actually using Ashra as a servant and has simply come here on vacation. Alex is astounded having risked life and limb to find King Thunder, but fortunately having bested Ashra in rock paper scissors relations between the people of Planet Aries and Planet Paperock grow and they become allies.

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars

After returning home to Planet Aries, Alex Kidd realises the star constellations that he used to look up at from Mount Eternal have vanished. Travelling to Mount Eternal for clues, Alex finds the wizard Daleda atop his home who informs him that an evil creature called Ziggurat once stole the same stars from Aries skyline five thousand years ago until Alex Kidd's ancestor; Halifax Kidd, traveled beyond the realm of space and time to put a stop to Ziggurat. Before it's defeat Ziggurat swore it would return to finish what it had started. Daleda opens a portal to the realm between space, and Alex Kidd (and his friend Stella in the arcade version) set off to retrieve the six Miracle Balls in order to restore the constellations.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

At some point yet later, Alex met a girl and they started dating. They were walking in a flower field one day when out of nowhere, Hanzo, the dark ninja appeared and kidnapped the young girl to use her in a ritual to restore his power.

Distraught and stunned, Alex was unable to move until the White Ninja, who had once defeated and banished Hanzo 10,000 years prior, appeared to Alex in spiritual form offering him his power to help prevent Hanzo from restoring his power and rescuing Alex's girlfriend.

Alex accepts, and the White Ninja's spirit embues itself with Alex, temporarily altering his appearance slightly into that of a taller teenager with darker hair, a black ninja outfit and all of his the White Ninja's abilities. Alex from here on can use a blade, throw kunai with accuracy, perform ninja magic such as turning himself into a fireball or a tornado and skip across water.

Upon defeating Hanzo and his minions, Alex's girlfriend was saved and the White Ninja left Alex's body, congratulating him on his success before vanishing.

Other appearances

Alex Kidd: High-Tech World

Alex Kidd: High-Tech World is a reskin of Anmitsu Hime, replacing the titular Princess Anmitsu who wishes to get to a cake shop before it closes with Alex Kidd who wishes to get to an arcade before it closes in order to play Out Run. Whilst the game includes Alex Kidd, his family members of King Thunder, Queen Patricia and Egle have been replaced with a new father, mother and brother.

Segagaga

Alex Kidd appears in Segagaga.

He has a heart to heart with the recently fired from Sega protagonist, Taro Sega, about how he used to be the face of Sega facing against Nintendo's Mario, but it didn't work out, eventually being replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog and forced to work in Sega's shops instead. He laments he spent a lot of time beating himself up after this thinking about why it ended up the way it did whilst staring into the sunset.

He states that as a video game character, without anyone to control him he remains stopped waiting for the next stage, waiting for the dev team to call him back in, but encourages Taro to move forward without giving up as he is a real person, even offering to help get Taro back his job at Sega via an old friend, a manager of the A-R&D team at Sega.

Afterwards Alex thanks the manager for his help, taking him out for drinks. The manager asks if Alex is allowed to drink(as he's canonically 14) to which Alex reveals he's turning 38 that year.[1]

Later Alex turns up for the final battle with Dogma alongside other Sega characters such as Ristar, Astal, Sir Pepper, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Opa-Opa, Alis Landale and others.

Sega All-Stars series

Alex Kidd is a reoccurring playable character in the Sega Superstars series.

Alex Kidd debuts in Sega Superstars Tennis as an unlockable character where he is classified as a control type. His Superstar move makes giant weights fall down on the opponents half of the court.

To unlock Alex Kidd as a playable character:

  1. Beat the Space Channel 5 tournament in singles (or the Virtua Cop tournament which is unlocked by completing the "Hit The Big Zombies!" in the "Curien Mansion" stage) to unlock the Space Harrier stage.
  2. Beat the Space Harrier stage mission "Get A High Score!" to unlock the Alex Kidd stage
  3. Beat the first level of the Alex Kidd stage.

Alex returns in Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing as an unlockable/purchasable racer for 32,500 SEGA Miles. He races on his sukopako motorcycle, and his All-star move has him ride the Peticopter shooting out projectiles as he races.

Alex returns again in Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed as a bonus character where he was automatically unlocked on December 25, 2012 as a christmas present from Sumo at the time. Anytime after this Alex will appear as a default starter character on the roster. As the 3DS and Steam versions came out after this date Alex is a starter character. Alex is missing however from the mobile version of the game.

In this game Alex wears a Santa inspired version of his normal outfit as a reference to his Christmas present status. His vehicle is a red capsule like vehicle. His All-Star move, "Rock, Paper, Scissors" has two gigantic hands appear either side of his car smashing opponents as he goes.

Hi☆sCoool! SeHa Girls

Alex Kidd makes a cameo in Hi☆sCoool! SeHa Girls episode 2 where he is one of the opponents the girls must fight to win a medal. Like all other opponents he is defeated in a single hit by Dreamcast's flying headbutt attack. His appearance uses his Enchanted Castle sprite, complete with loss animation of his ghost floating into the sky.
