The protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, soon to become the Demi-fiend, is one of Ms. Takao's students who survives the Conception and is reborn as a demon.
Appearance
Prior to the end of the world, the being later known as Demi-Fiend had short black hair, and wore a tracksuit top and skintight shorts. In the original Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocture, his tracksuit top has a blue stripe across it at a diagonal angle, adorned by two white stripes on either side and a dark grey base. This pattern continues onto the sleeves of the jacket. The sides have lacing on them, and a zip with a circular ring. In the subsquent remakes and remasters of the title, the striped tracksuit top is swapped out for a light grey one over a green hooded sweatshirt which pops out the top collar. The arms now have a white stripe going from the shoulder to the wrist, with small blocky white humanoids with horns patterned down it.
After ingesting the Magatama given to him to allow him to survive the new demon infested world he emerges as the Demi-Fiend and his top is removed. His entire body is covered in thick black patterns, including stripes coming down from the top of his head and across his eyes to his jaw. There is a stripe from each of his knuckle bones that go up his arm. His torso has multiple black stripes revolving around his body. From the nape of his neck a large horn has grown. The tattoos are capable of glowing.
Personality
The Demi-Fiend is a silent protagonist, so remains largely a blank slate character. As the player's actions decide Demi-Fiend's destiny, he can go down several routes.
His NPC appearance has him as a battle hungry individual with a lack of patience.
History
Originally a Japanese high school student, the human who would go on to become the Demi-Fiend arrived at Shinjuku Medical Center alongside two friends, Chiaki Tachibana and Isamu Nitta to visit their ill teacher, Yuko Takao.
After arriving in the hospital, they are surprised to find it's abandoned. Chiaki has the human known later known as Demi-Fiend and Isamu check the other floors for their teacher, whilst she remains in the lobby reading a magazine. The two boys meanwhile agree to split up, and to his horror, the human later known as Demi-Fiend finds blood in the hallways, and soon finds himself face to face with a terrifying man known as Hikawa, who summons a demon and attempts to take his life. Fortunately for the protagonist, Yuko Takao shows up and tells Hikawa that if he kills him then she will exclude herself from his plans if he harms her students.
As he leaves the room Yuko requests he comes to the rooftop with her. As he makes his way to the elevators he comes across a young blonde boy accompanied by an elderly nurse maid wearing mourning clothes, but they mysteriously disappear as he approaches them. He makes his way to the roof, and meets Yuko there. She admits that she's not actually ill, but this medical center was the only place that would allow him, Chiaki and Isamu to survive the Conception, aka the end of one world and the rebirth of another. Yuko tells him to not panic and tells him to come find her after the Conception and she will explain everything. The two watch as the world outside the hospital begins to fill with negative energy which kills every living human outside the medical center, and the earth begins to fold over on itself, entering the cocoon like state before being reborn again.
The energy however is enough to knock the young man unconcious, and as he fades in and out of conciousness he once again sees the blonde boy and the old woman. They crouch over him, and the boy holds a Magatama, what appears to be a centipede like creature, above him. The young boy drops the creature onto the protagonist, which merges with him, turning him into the Demi-Fiend, a half human, half demon with the body and toughness of a demon and the heart of a human.
When he awakens he's alone in a hospital bed. He gets up, and wanders the hospital hallways, coming across demons as he does so and being forced to engage them in combat, although he also meets a Pixie, a small fairy like demon who agrees to aid him on his journey. Eventually he comes across a man he'd met previously in the park, Jyoji Hijiri, who suggests with his new powerful body, that the Demi-Fiend go and explore the world for some answers to find out what is going on.
The Demi-Fiend soon finds himself with the destiny of either aiding one of the remaining humans in reshaping the world in their own desire, fighting against the rebirth cycle and destroying everything or attempting to bring back the old world that was destroyed.
