Kura-Kura

Flying, fire-flailing jellyfish bot.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Kura-Kura[1] (クラクラ[2] Kurakura?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, jellyfish-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance

The Kura-Kuras are Badniks that resemble jellyfishes, having white bodies and two long slender tentacles. The Kura-Kuras also have a large flaming ball attached to the bottom of the middle portion of their body, which they dangle underneath them in order to attack their foes.

Overview

The Kura-Kuras make their only appearance in Sonic Advance 2, where they appear exclusively in Hot Crater. In gameplay, the Kura-Kuras themselves pose no real danger, but they can still damage the player if they touch the flaming ball that they swing below themselves. The Kura-Kuras are usually stationed at places above ramps or springs, making it much harder for the player to avoid these Badniks. In order to defeat a Kura-Kura, the player must attack the upper portion of their body, as the flaming ball that the Kura-Kuras dangle underneath themselves makes it harder for the player to attack them from underneath. Upon their destruction, a Kura-Kura will release an Animal.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing, the Kura-Kuras were among the many Badniks that attended Orbot and Cubot's Winter Jam reality show.[3]

Trivia

  • The Kura-Kuras are somewhat similar to another Badnik named Kuraa which appeared in Sonic Advance.
    • Coincidentally, both Badniks' names come from "kurage," which is Japanese for jellyfish.
