Raum ▶️ is a Front Line Champion in Paladins, added on November 6th, 2019.
Lore
This is Raum's official bio currently found in his champion page in-game.
All tremble at the mere mention of his name. He is wrath. He is fury. He is Raum, Rage of the Abyss. Consumed by burning conflict, tempered in the Abyss, his purpose is clear — annihilation.
He has fought and triumphed over every entity in those war-scarred plains, shattering every soul that stands against his might. Few remain who are still worthy of his attention, and their conflicts grow stale. He found himself summoned to the Realm, a fertile ground teeming with new victims whose souls are too well-connected to their bodies. As long as there is a Realm to destroy, his havoc will never end.
This is an unofficial version of Raum's bio intended to more clearly present all currently known information regarding him. Sources can be found here.
Consumed by conflict, tempered in the Abyss, all fear his name, for Raum has only one goal: annihilation. Though few remain worthy of his attention, he would be summoned into the Realm by Corvus as a result of being tricked by Seris, giving Raum a new world to rampage in.
It wouldn't be until the tigron warrior Tiberius challenged the beast, that he would be temporarily halted, as the two engaged in a battle that eventually ended in a draw.
Later, following Yagorath's defeat, Raum would battle Azaan, though the outcome of this fight is currently unknown.
Summary
Raum is a Frontline designed to deal and soak as much damage as possible. His Hellfire Gatling shreds at close range, but becomes almost useless at longer range except for preventing his enemy's out of combat healing. Ignition spins his Gatling to maximum output instantly, consuming no ammo for three seconds and surely a surprise to any foolish enough to ambush him. Soul Harvest draws in all Soul Fragments on the battlefield, granting him 2000 armor. This can stack up to 4000 armor in total for each fragment collected. Juggernaut launches Raum forward in a full sprint, bowling through enemies to deal 600 damage and applying a knockup of 900 to each enemy he hits. While exceedingly powerful and damaging, it's notorious for being easily shut down with simple stuns, so players must be cautious of sprinting into an enemy team. Raum's Ultimate, Cataclysm, deals 999 damage and stuns enemies hit for 1.2 seconds. Upon activation, Raum is immune to crowd control, and any shields, deployables, pets and illusions hit are destroyed. Raums versatile talents allow for different playstyles, from a Juggernaut based playstyle with Enforcer, a semi-supportive playstyle with his talent Subservience, or an Ultimate based playstyle with Earthsplitter. His overwhelming presence on the battlefield will demand focus fire and draw many ultimates, soaking damage for his own team and dealing even more in return with constant Earthsplitting or uses of Juggernaut.

Trivia
Lore
- Raum's fight with Tiberius ended in a draw, with the latter having pushed Raum back and temporarily stopped his rampage.[1][2]
- Though Tiberius' trailer released not long after Raum himself and showed this battle gave many the impression Raum wasn't actually a big deal, Raum was indeed a huge problem. The Resistance (and likely the Magistrate as well) felt forced to focus on him due to chaos he was causing, which lasted for quite a while, with Raum's release occurring during autumn, while Tiberius only stopped him during early winter.[3][4] Raum's various cards give an additional look at the damage he was causing.
- The pattern that appears in some of Raum's cards such as Desperation and Triumphant Ascension is actually the seal that's capable of summoning him. This seal was also originally going to appear in Corvus' card Ominous Relic, but it was ultimately changed.[5]
- Additionally, Seris' orb was responsible for finding Raum within the Abyss and guiding him towards the seal that could bring him into the Realm.[6]
- Azaan and Raum are around the same level "in a sense", though who would win in a fight is unclear.[7]
- Despite Raum being an Abyssal Lord, he's apparently not actually on the level of one and is instead closer to a general of the Abyss.[8]
- In Raum's episode of Drunk Lore, it was incorrectly stated that Raum works for the Magistrate in exchange for souls.[9] However, this isn't canon.[10]
- Though Raum has a mouth visible on a portion of his texture sheet (though lacks modeling under his mask to make it appear), this is apparently more of a joke and not an indication of what Raum looks like under his mask.[11]
- Based on a dev statement revealing Viktor to be around 5'9 or 175cm tall and comparing it to model sizes in-game and out of game, it was discovered that Raum would be around 7' or 213cm tall, while adding his horns would bring Raum to around 7'7 or 234cm tall.
- In the 2022 Paladins Conference, it was confirmed by Lead Designer John R. Paladins that the name "Raum" is actually an acronym that stands for "RAGE OF THE ABYSS".

Promotion
- Raum's teasers can be seen here:
- (Teaser 1) "The tides of war are turning against you. You've nowhere left to turn. There is only one option left to you, should you dare to take it."
- (Teaser 2) "No force in the Realm would expect this weapon. For this weapon is not of the Realm."
- (Teaser 3) "Reared in the eternal conflict of the Abyss. Nourished on the souls of the lost. Be certain of one thing: this force will annihilate anything that stands in its way."
- (Teaser 4) "And so I showed them the door to otherworldly power. And they opened it. How easy it is to lead desperate men down the path to their own destruction."
- (Teaser 5) "I told them that this force will annihilate anything that stands in its way, and it will. For nothing stands in the way of RAUM."
Concepts
- An early brainstorming sketch for the initially planned new champion releases of 2019 features an early version of Raum, notably having purple skin, a more monstrous figure, and a large backpack connected to his Gatling Gun.[12]
- The first proper concept for Raum originally featured him with a far more wild and tribal looking design, as well as lacking a tail, and wielding a weapon seemingly covered in marks similarly to Seris' weapon.[13]
- The original temporary name for Sinister Allies was "Emerging Faction".[14]
- Concept art for some of Raum's cards show several differences to the final product.[15] More notable changes include:
- Desperation features the artwork flipped, with Corvus appearing slightly less desperate.
- Triumphant Ascension also features flipped artwork, as well as being slightly zoomed out.
- War-Torn Plains features additional weapons, as well as an additional banner, atop which sits an Abyssal vulture-like creature.
Other
- The sound Raum's weapon makes when spinning up is that of an electric guitar.[16][17]
- An alternate version of the card Abyssal Connections, which features a more obscured Raum, was used for one of his teasers.[18]
- A prototype version of the Realm map is featured in the background of Desperation, with a mark on the Shattered Desert. The word "Tigron" is also written on one of the papers in the card, this being prior to Tiberius' official reveal.[19]
- The seal on the large paper in Desperation is seemingly the same seal as seen in Raum's other cards Hellish Lodestones and Triumphant Ascension.
- Raum and Imani are the only champions released in 2019 that are not featured in the 3rd Anniversary Spray.
- Raum's loincloth notably clips through the ground during Tiberius' teaser trailer.
- There was initially talk of a possible female skin for Raum, though the skin was canceled due to running into too many technical hurdles.[20] However, the concept was eventually brought back and made into a reality with the Chaos Rising Event Pass.
- Raum will periodically say "Die!" while using juggernaut. This is a subtle nod to the fact that he will kill you.
Champion Skins
Subjugator
- A subjugator is one who defeats and enslaves their enemies.
Abyssal Lord
- This skin is named after what Raum actually is, an Abyssal Lord.
- This skin's color scheme is also likely a reference to the Abyss itself, with its main color consisting of purples and pinks.
Crypt Guardian / Undead Colossus
- Despite having a unique voice pack, these skins still use one of Raum's default lines (▶️) while in the champion selection lobby.
- While difficult to see in-game, the message "#EpsteinDidntKillHimself" is present on the Crypt Guardian skin. This message is not present on the Undead Colossus skin though.[21]
- The Crypt Guardian skin appears in The Risen avatar.
- The Crypt Guardian skin also appears in the Ancient History and Raumses The Great sprays.
- These skins share their theme with Tomb Keeper Tiberius, Sphinx Soldier Tiberius, Divine Daughter Ying, High Priestess Ying, Emerald Bandit Maeve, Temple Raider Maeve, and Dunestrider Kinessa.
Kraumpus
- Despite having a unique voice pack, this skin still uses one of Raum's default lines (▶️) while in the champion selection lobby.
- This skin is based on the Krampus, a type of demon that during Christmas, punishes children who have misbehaved.
- This skin originally started as a concept created for fun by Paladins artist Thunderbrush.[22]
- The joke "You get some coal, you get some coal, and you get. Some. Coal. Everybody gets some coal! Wahahahaha!" (▶️) is a reference to a line from The Oprah Winfrey Show.
- The line "I'm not sorry, just let it go." (▶️) might be a reference to the song Let it Go from the movie Frozen.
- The line "It's called "silent night" for a reason!" (▶️) is a reference to the Christmas carol Silent Night.
- Several lines (▶️ ▶️ ▶️) mention an unseen character called "Nick". These are likely references to Saint Nicholas, a Christian saint with a reputation of secretly giving gifts similarly to Santa Claus.
- This skin shares its theme with A-bomb-inable Bomb King, Merrymaker Evie, Merrymaker Lian, Merrymaker Dredge, Merrymaker Maeve, and Sugar Plum Willo.
R.O.M. / Heatsink
- Despite having a unique voice pack, these skins still use one of Raum's default lines (▶️) while in the champion selection lobby.
- The R.O.M. skin is named after a computer memory device of the same name.
- The Heatsink skin is named after a computer component used for cooling with the same name.
- Using the "Tribute" emote or Exultation MVP pose with these skins will cause memes to fall out of the summoned portal.[23]
- All the memes that appear can be seen here.
- The line ""Open the spawn room doors, Raum", they say. Well, I'm sorry, player, I'm afraid I can't do that." (▶️) is a reference to a line from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- The kill taunt against Barik "You might want to upgrade your targeting A.I., Engineer." (▶️) may be a reference to the Engineer from Team Fortress 2.
- The line "The like button? No, the only thing being smashed in is your face." (▶️) is a reference to a trend commonly associated with video creators and social media influencers, who enthusiastically ask their viewers to like their video by "Smashing the Like Button".
- The line "Do vulpin dream of electric chickens?" (▶️) is a reference to the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.
- The line "So, I was just hanging out, right, when Buck... Step into the light and... see my library if you want." (▶️) references a number of different lines in Paladins; it references Sun Kissed Cassie's infamous joke (▶️), Jenos' ultimate line (▶️), and Student of Magic Vivian's "You Rock!" line (▶️).
- The line "W-O-O-O. Ha. Just kidding. Woohoo." (▶️) may be a reference to a similar line from GR0B0T Grover (▶️).
- The spawn chatter line with Grover "I've never been a fan of programs with root access" (▶️) refers to rooting in programming.
- The spawn chatter line with Moji "Does that "thing" count as multithreading?" (▶️) references computer multithreading.
- The line "Why are we still here? Simply to idle?" (▶️) is a reference to the meme of the same name from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
- The R.O.M. skin appears in the Malicious Software avatar.
- This avatar also appears as a purchasable animated avatar on Steam.
- The R.O.M. skin also appears in the Choose your Champion and Pixelated sprays.
- These skins share their theme with Avatar Androxus, Modded Androxus, Full Dive Ying, Rezzed Ying, E-Mani Imani, Genesis Imani, Defragged Inara, Digitized Inara, Digitized Bomb King, and Digitized Fernando.
The Harlequin / Eternal Devilry
- Despite having a unique voice pack, these skins still use one of Raum's default lines (▶️) while in the champion selection lobby.
- The line "How'd I get so buff? Every time I commit an atrocity, I do one push up!" (▶️) references the How'd you get so buff meme.
- These skins likely originate from earlier scrapped concepts regarding a female skin for Raum, which was cancelled due to technical issues.[20]
- This skin had several early concepts, one of which included a muscular variant, which seems to be this concept, but it ultimately went unused, with a big factor being due to the silhouette being too similar to Raum's, as opposed to looking like an entirely different character.[24][25]
- The concept art above also shows that originally, these skins were meant to be an Echo character named "Astrid".
- The Harlequin skin appears in the Eternal Prisoner avatar.
- These skins share their theme with Eternal Emissary and Deathless Emissary Tyra.
