Grover ▶️ is a Support Champion in Paladins, added on February 11th, 2016.
Lore
This is Grover's official bio currently found in his champion page in-game.
The "soul of the forest" isn't some invisible spirit or comforting poem about being "one with nature", it's an angry, walking tree with a huge stone axe.
After decades of peaceful slumber since the last time Grover had to walk the land — to help put down the Scourges — he awakened once again to find the forests of the Realm threatened by the spread of humanoid civilizations, rampant industrialization, and the all-consuming fires of war.
Hefting his trusty axe, he stomped into battle once again intent on destroying anything and anyone who would harm the natural world. As time went on, he learned to trust others who stood for nature enough to join the Paladins in their fight to protect the Realm.
This is an unofficial version of Grover's bio intended to more clearly present all currently known information regarding him. Sources can be found here.
When nature is threatened, it fights back, which is exactly what Grover is. Having defended the Realm from the old Goblin Scourges of the past, Grover awoke once again when nature was threatened by the growing conflict between the Magistrate and Resistance. Despite his opposition to the war in general, Grover would later join the Resistance for some reason.
According to Atlas, in the Lost Future, Grover would end up dying at some point.
This was Grover's in-game bio prior to the The Damned Frontier update. It's no longer considered canon.
The soul of the forest isn't an invisible spirit or comforting poem about being one with nature, it's an angry walking tree with a huge stone axe. After decades of peaceful slumber since the last time Grover had to walk the land and help put down the goblin scourge, he has awoken once again to find the forests of the Realm threatened by the spread of humanoid civilization, rampant industrialization, and the fires of war.
Hoisting his trusty axe, he stomps into battle once again, intent on destroying anything and anyone who would harm the natural world.

Trivia
Lore
- Grover is the embodiment of nature itself, but this doesn't make him a deity.[2]
- Grover is largely remembered from the Goblin Scourges, at least by those still alive from that time period.[2]
- Grover is originally from the Enchanted Forest, which is also part of Greenwood.[3][4]
- While Grover originates from Smite and makes several references to it, Paladins is a completely different world. At best, the two take place far apart either in different galaxies or the distant past / future, but regardless, there's zero overlap from Smite into Paladins.[5]
- Based on a dev statement revealing Viktor to be around 5'9 or 175cm tall and comparing it to model sizes in-game and out of game, it was discovered that Grover would be around 6'6 or 201cm tall, while measuring to the top of Grover's branches brings him to around 8.3 or 252cm tall.
Cameos
Grover appears in the following content:
- Cards
- Priority Targets - Corvus Card*
- Avatars
- Other
- End Times Story
- Heal the World - Merchandise Design
- :hrx_grover: - Steam Emoticon
References
- Grover's taunt towards Fernando, "Only you can stop forest fires!" (▶️), is a reference to Smokey the Bear.
- One of Grover's kill taunts against another Grover "If a tree falls in the forest..." (▶️) is a reference to a common question "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
- One of Grover's kill taunts towards Buck "You... rock. *chuckle*" (▶️) references Buck's old ultimate ability which featured him trapping enemies with rock walls. Gameplay Buck's old incarnation can be seen here.
- Grover's emote "Tree Pose" references a yoga pose of the same name.
- Having originated from Smite as the mount of Sylvanus, Grover makes a few references to the game.
- One of Grover's jokes "I will... smite you. *chuckle*" (▶️) is an obvious reference to the game.
- One of Grover's Jokes, "A wise man once said, 'I'm not very frond of you.'" (▶️) references one of Sylvanus's taunts.
- Likewise, one of Grover's Introductions, "Good morning! Time to get up! This forest needs our protection. *chuckle*" (▶️) references one of Sylvanus' introduction lines.
- Another of Grover's lines "Grow, little one, grow! *chuckle*" (▶️) references a line Sylvanus says when using an ability.
- Grover also blames Sylvanus upon defeat "This is all Sylvanus' fault." (▶️).
- One of Grover's kill taunts towards an enemy Grover also mentions Sylvanus "Aw, run home to Sylvanus." (▶️).
- One of Grover's kill taunts towards Cassie "I used to have a bird just like you." (▶️) references an owl that accompanied Grover in Smite.
Concepts
- Grover was originally a melee-ranged bruiser, but received a significant rework with Closed Beta 33. Gameplay of the original Grover can be seen here.
- Even before his melee incarnation, Grover was initially going to wield a type of lantern as a weapon, as can be seen in old images.
- In a blog post regarding the removal of the 'Parts and Pieces' skin system, various concepts were shown off to showcase what new types of skins could be created with the new system. Among these concepts was a Grover skin, seemingly Abyss-themed, though the style does also bear resemblance to the Darkness.
- Concept art was also created for a Grover weapon skin in the same style as weapons found in the Means of Destruction Chest.[6]
Other
- Grover originates from Smite, another game developed by Hi-Rez, where he serves as Sylvanus' mount.
- This makes Grover the first crossover content Paladins received.
- Grover's weapon received a visual rework in Open Beta 49, while his old weapon was made available as the Forest Foe 3000.
- Grover's name is a pun on grove.
- Grover was originally a melee-ranged bruiser, but received a significant rework with Paladins Closed Beta Version 0.33.1266.1, the patch released on September 12, 2016. Gameplay of the original Grover can be seen here.
- In older versions of Paladins, there used to be a number of additional recolors of default champions. For Grover, these recolors included the Lavender and Saffron skins.
- The removed Parts and Pieces system also resulted in an unused unique cosmetic for Grover to be removed before it could be properly introduced; this being the Australia Day accessory.
- Having been present in the mobile game 'Paladins Strike', Grover received a unique skin exclusive to Strike. This skin would be Voodoo Grover.
Champion Skins
Autumn
- This skin is based on trees during Autumn.
Blightbark
- This skin's name may be based on chestnut blight, a type of fungal disease that can affect chestnut trees.
Winter
- This skin is based on trees during Winter.
- This skin's splash art features Grover wielding the Forest Foe 3000, which was his original weapon design.
- However this weapon is not contained in the collection.
Rosebud Canopy
- A canopy is a cloth often hung above something; in this case, Grover is covered in roses.
Frosty Foliage
- This skin is a reference to trees during Christmas.
- This skin appears in the Festive Grover spray.
Doom Shroom
- This skin is likely a reference to fungal infections that completely take over a tree.
GR0B0T
- This skin uses a modified version of the model Grover's uses in Sylvanus' Dr. Vanus skin from Smite.
- The line "If I cut down a forest, does it make a sound?" (▶️) is a reference to a common question "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
Soul Briar / Seeping Corruption
- Soul Briar appears in Wukong Talus and Monkey-King Talus' splash art.
- The Soul Briar skin also appears in the Forest Protector avatar.
- These skins were designed by Alexis_Pflaum (who also designed Dark Monarch Lian and Death-Goddess Lian) for the Community Battle Pass.[7]
- This makes them some of the few skins to have been designed by a community member, sharing this trait with Ska'drin Ash, Wukong Talus, Dark Monarch Lian, Sweet Shop Evie, and the respective recolors of the former three.
- These skins were part of the Community Battle Pass alongside Ska'drin Ash, Scorned Ash, Wukong Talus, Monkey-King Talus, Dark Monarch Lian, and Death-Goddess Lian.
