Buck ▶️ is a Flank Champion in Paladins, added on November 17th, 2015.
Lore
This is Buck's official bio currently found in his champion page in-game.
Buck's fighting style is informed by his diverse and complicated story, and is just as unique and esoteric. Pulling from his past experiences in the Thousand Hands Guild, he effectively combines them the self-discipline of a devout monk, clever ambush tactics commonly used by underworld thugs, and the skills and weaponry of a front-line soldier into something more than the sum of its parts.
Once a loyal member of the Sentinels, he has returned to Crosswind Hold to join the Resistance in their struggle against the Magistrate. Now, he works with various friends and foes alike to support the Paladins & fight back against both his former groups.
This is an unofficial version of Buck's bio intended to more clearly present all currently known information regarding him. Sources can be found here.
Originally a member of the Thousand Hands criminal empire, Buck would eventually leave and become a member of the Magistrate and their elite military group known as the Sentinels. Following the group's disastrous final mission and now finding himself broken without a purpose, Buck left once again, eventually climbing Ascension Peak and becoming a devoted monk, where he would later meet Jenos upon his return, and be shown the various cosmic wonders he had seen while in the cosmos, as well as a dark threat that would one day threaten the Realm. Following this, Buck would join the Resistance for unknown reasons.
After the defeat of Yagorath, Buck would join the New Resistance for similarly unclear reasons.
This was Buck's in-game bio prior to the The Damned Frontier update. It's no longer considered canon.
Buck's story is just as diverse and complicated as his fighting style, as one is the direct result of the other. Pulling from those experiences, he effectively combines the self-discipline of a devout monk, clever ambushes commonly used by underworld thugs, and the tactics and weaponry of a front-line soldier.
Once a loyal member of the Magistrate's own elite fighting group he has now returned to where it all began, Crosswind Hold, to join the Resistance in their struggle against the Magistrate.
Summary
Buck is a flank champion with an emphasis on close-quarters combat while using his higher durability and sustain to dominate fights with lower health targets, with a variety of tools in his kit to both close in and keep enemies in his effective range. Though, Buck's size which rivals that of frontline champions, and limited range makes him an easy target to hit, and his tools are easy to predict.
Skills
Buck's primary fire is his Shotgun; a weapon with massive spread, fit for high damage in close quarters, with some room for error within its range.
His secondary fire is Net Shot, which fires a massive net that slows enemies by half, allowing Buck to more easily chase down, or make escapes harder for enemies.
Recovery is Buck's Primary ability, which restores a massive chunk of his health over time, giving him sustenance on demand.
For his movement ability, he has Heroic Leap; a massive jump that shakes the earth as he lands. This leap gives Buck his means to close in, keep up, or get out.
His ultimate ability is Buck Wild; enter a state where you refill and gain infinite ammo, and a faster fire rate. Perfect for when Buck needs more firepower.
Talents and Cards
Bucks's talents provide him the following:
- Buck does more damage to enemies hit by his Net Shot with Ensnare.
- Buck gains a burst of healing, and an increase of health after using Recovery with Bulk Up.
- Buck's Heroic Leap does a burst of damage and knocks enemies upwards when landing with Bounce House.
Most of Buck's cards focus on reducing his cooldowns, most notably on his Heroic Leap, granting him higher durability, and increasing his movement speed.

- The constellations Jenos uses for his Astral Mark and Void Grip abilities appear when Buck uses Recovery and his ultimate Buck Wild respectively.[3][4]
- Based on a dev statement revealing Viktor to be around 5'9 or 175cm tall and comparing it to model sizes in-game and out of game, it was discovered that Buck would be around 6'7 or 204cm tall.

- One of Buck's introduction lines "I'm here to kick butt and chew bubblegum! And properly dispose of the gum in a designated waste container." (▶️) is likely a reference to a line from the 1988 film They Live. It could also be a reference to a similar line from Duke Nukem.
- Buck's ultimate voice line "I am the juggernaut!" (▶️) could be a reference to a phrase associated with the Juggernaut from Marvel Comics.

Other
- Buck was one of the first playable characters in Paladins.
- Buck and Bomb King share the same actor, Joshua Tomar
- Buck is notable in the regard that while every other champion that first released alongside Paladins received some form of alpha lore, Buck would be the only character that never did. This continued after the alpha lore was removed, with Buck being the only character to lack a title while new champions received theirs right away. Eventually though, Buck would receive a title.[5][6]
- Buck had several icon concepts prior to the final choice being settled on.[7]
- In older versions of Paladins, there used to be a number of additional recolors of default champions. For Buck, these recolors included the Alpine and Mesa skins.
- Having been present in the mobile game 'Paladins Strike', Buck received unique skins exclusive to Strike. These skins include Abomination, Cerulean Tech, Hazard Tech, Hunter, and Lionheart.

- The line "Keep the change ya filthy animal." (▶️) is a reference to a line from Home Alone.
Buck Wild
- This skin is based on the American wrestler Hulk Hogan.
- The line "What you gonna do, when Buck runs wild on you, brother?" (▶️) is one of Hulk Hogan's popular catchphrases, which is also a reference to the song Bad Boys by Bob Marley.
- Though not a direct reference to Hulk Hogan, the line "These moves are just too sweet!" (▶️) refers to the catchphrase of the professional wrestling stable: New World Order.
- The line "And that's the bottom line, cuz Buck Wild said so!" (▶️) is a reference to a catchphrase of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin.
- The line "Finally, the Buck has come back to the Realm!" (▶️) is a reference to a catchphrase of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.
- "Lay'em the smack down!"(▶️) is another one of The Rock's catchphrases, however, The Rock's version is'LAYETH the Smacketh/SmackDown".
- There are two voice lines that pay homage to late professional wrestler 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. Those are: "I'm riding on the edge of a lightning bolt!" (▶️) and "The cream of the crop!" (▶️).
- This skin also pays multiple homages to Ric Flair. The use of "Woo!" (Especially the way it is said) and "To be the champion, you gotta beat the champion! Woo!" (▶️) are both references to Flair.
- The line "But... the script said I was gonna win..." (▶️) references how professional wrestling is most often scripted.
- The line "Is this thing, uh... legal?" (▶️) references how some matches allow the use of weapons, while others don't.
- The line "B.K.O., out of nowhere!"(▶️) is a reference to a popular announcement call "RKO Out of nowhere!" for the finishing move: RKO used by wrestler Randy Orton.
- "I'm gonna end this, in five rounds!" (▶️) maybe a reference to retired wrestler Taz's catchphrase where he used to say 'I'll end you in five minutes".
- While not visible in-game, the splash art for this skin features several signs being held by members of the audience. These signs say various things such as "Walk with Buck", "Buck 3:16", and "Nerf Koga". Out of these, Walk With Buck heavily references the catchphrase "Walk With Elias" and Buck 3:16 once again references "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
Buckules
- This skin is likely based on the Roman god Hercules.
- The line "The Battleground of the Gods." (▶️) is a reference to Smite, another game developed by Hi-Rez.

- The line "You have a lot of nerve being alive." (▶️) may be a reference to a scene from The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.
- The lines "Here's some advice: be like me, and never stop moving." (▶️), "Gotta move, gotta move, can't stand still! Gotta move!" (▶️) and "*growling* Gotta move, gotta move... can't sit still... gotta move!" (▶️) are most likely a reference to some real life shark species that never stop swimming to get oxygen through their gills.
- These skins were originally a concept for the Dark Depths Event Pass, but ultimately ended up in the Beach Bash Event Pass instead for unknown reasons.[10][11]
- Using Recovery with these skins will show Mernos Jenos' Astral Mark, rather than Jenos' default Astral Mark.
- The teaser for these skins reference the movie Jaws.
- Beachside Octavia appears in this teaser as well.
- This teaser also appears in Lifeguard Tiberius' teaser.
- These skins share their theme with Mermaid Ying, Siren Ying, Mernos Jenos, Marauder Tyra, Royal Mark Tyra, Sea Queen Saati, Crimson Tide Saati, and Leviathan Yagorath.
