This is Grohk's official bio currently found in his champion page in-game.


Being struck by lightning once is usually more than enough to kill someone, but after dozens of strikes, Grohk was still standing. Though it took him a while to realize it, he had been imbued with the power to control the lightning itself, and he put it to good use defending his tribe from a goblin attack that would have otherwise destroyed them.

Seeing his newfound power as a sign from the weather-spirits, the rest of the Red River orcs immediately appointed him their chieftain. When the clash of the Magistrate and Resistance escalated, he sensed a new storm of a different sort brewing and joined the battle on behalf of his tribe. As the dust settles into an uncertain future, all he seeks is a Realm where his people are safe.

Following being struck several times by lighting, Grohk eventually realized he'd been imbued with electrical powers; which he used to defend his tribe, the Red River Orcs, from a goblin attack. This prompted his tribe to appoint him as chieftain, believing his powers were a sign from the weather spirits. But with the growing Crystal War, Grohk decided to join the battle between the Magistrate and Resistance himself.

This was Grohk's in-game bio prior to the The Damned Frontier update. It's no longer considered canon.

This was Grohk's bio on the official Paladins website in the extremely early days of Paladins.[2] Naturally, it's no longer considered canon


Grohk was always a bit... off. He never fit in with the other orcs. In fact, the Fire Tribe cheered when Grohk left. They laughed when he returned, proclaiming himself prophet to Vex, the Lightning God. The tribe stopped laughing when Grohk electrocuted them all. Now, Shaman to the new Lightning Orcs of the Red River, Grohk ventures into Crosswind Hold to interpret the will of Vex.

Summary

Grohk is a support champion with great damage, decent survivability, and area-of-effect healing. However, he is limited in range, and his damage lacks instantaneousness as it takes time to reach maximum value. Moreover, his healing restricts where his teammates can go if they need his attention.

Skills

Grohk's primary fire, Lightning Staff, fires a lightning beam that starts at medium damage before ramping up significantly. The staff also uses a resource meter rather than standard Ammo.
Shock Pulse is his secondary fire, which shoots out a projectile that, if it lands on an enemy, will bounce to and damage other nearby enemies as well, providing a decent amount of area damage.
His Primary ability is Healing Totem, which allows Grohk to place up to two totems that heal in a respectable radius at a fair rate, allowing Grohk to heal multiple targets at a good distance from each other.
For his movement ability, he has Ghost Walk, which makes him Ethereal and gives him increased movement speed while cleansing negative effects, perfect for escaping or removing Anti-Healing while his totems are down to heal himself up.
His ultimate ability is Tempest, which allows him to take to the sky and fire lightning bolts that damage and slow enemies, while speeding up and healing allies as well as himself.

Talents and Cards

Grohk's talents provide him with the following:

  • Increase both the radius and charges of Healing Totem with Totemic Ward.
  • Grant Grohk's Lightning Staff increased ammo resource and the ability to heal allies and increase their speed with Spirit's Domain.
  • Increase the damage of Lightning Staff and grant additional bounces on Shockpulse as well as reduce its cooldown upon hits with lightning staff with Maelstrom.

Grohk's cards focus on maintaining/increasing his staff's ammo resource and augmenting his abilities, notably his healing totems, as well as granting himself and/or allies movement speed buffs.

The staff will recharge over time after a brief period of not firing if it has not fully depleted. Has a maximum Ammo count of 100 and is fully effective up to 80 units.
  • This ability deals Direct Damage.
  • Weapon will overheat and be automatically reloaded if Grohk runs out of ammo.
    • Can be fired uninterrupted for 5s before overheating.
    • Has a 2.9s reload time after overheating and can be animation canceled after 2s.
  • Ammo recharges over time when not being used, which is represented by a charge bar.
    • After shooting, there is a 0.525s delay before Lightning Staff begins to recharge, and it takes 1.3s to fully recharge.

Deploy a Healing Totem that Heals allies within 30 units for 325 every 1s. Healing Totem has 1250 Health and lasts 6s or until destroyed. This ability has 2 charges and has a Deployment range of 100 units. Affected by Bulldozer.
  • Is a Deployable.
  • Can block Grohk's Lightning from his staff.
  • Heals ~48.8 per tick (every 0.1s).
  • Heals by applying a 1s buff that is refreshed every 0.25s.
    • This means that the totem will continue to heal allies briefly after leaving its radius.
  • Generates ~1.04% of ultimate charge per second per ally healed.
    • Self-healing will not generate ultimate charge.

Lore

  • Grohk is from a river located in Greenwood.[3]
  • Grohk is notable for being the only character that's completely absent from the game's lore, as while most characters receive a cinematic trailer or eventually make cameos in other champion teasers or cards, Grohk has never received either, leaving him with absolutely zero appearances beyond minor cameos in the occasional avatar or incredibly old trailer.
  • Based on a dev statement revealing Viktor to be around 5'9 or 175cm tall and comparing it to model sizes in-game and out of game, it was discovered that Grohk would be around 5'5 or 165cm tall.

  • Grohk had several design alterations during development, some minor, others vastly different, with an early piece of concept art depicting him as a human character. Eventually, they settled for his current blue orc appearance.[4][5]
  • Grohk had several icon concepts prior to the final choice being settled on.[6]

    • This weapon no longer uses a Reload. Instead it uses an Overheat system. Firing overheats the weapon, and not firing for a short time will cool it back down. If the overheat bar drains fully the weapon overheats, incurring a long recharge period.

    • Now has no Cooldown, but consumes additional ammo to use.
  • Tempest
    • Improved visual presentation of this ability.
    • No longer applies a Knockback.
    • Now deals 215 damage every 0.3s to a random nearby target.
    • Reduced duration from 5s ➞ 4s.
    • Fixed an issue where Tempest would not damage Shields.

  • Ultimate and alt-fire systems added to the game:
    • Ability 1 [Q] - Healing Totem
      • Deploy a totem that heals nearby allies over time.
    • Ability 2 [RMB] - Chain Lightning
      • Weapon attacks chain to nearby enemies for 35% weapon damage for 5s.
    • Ability 3 [F] - Ghost Walk
      • Become untargetable and gain 40% Movement Speed for 2s. Removes debuffs on use.
    • Ultimate [E] - Tempest
      • Grohk creates a lightning storm around himself for 5s, randomly striking enemies every dealing damage and knocking back.
