Lava Spawner

For a renewable source of lava, see Pointed Dripstone.
This page describes content that exists only in outdated versions of Java Edition.
This feature used to be in the game, but has ever since been removed. It may or may not return in a future update.

The lava spawner[citation needed] was a block that would repeatedly create lava on each of its four orthogonal sides.

Obtaining

Breaking

Lava spawners can be broken instantly, regardless of held items.

Chest loot

Lava spawners could be found in Indev House chests in stacks of 99 in in-20100124-2, and stacks of 100 in in-20100128. Prior to this, they were added to the player's inventory by default in a stack of 5.

Usage

Gears on infinite sources

The lava spawner has many visual and functional differences from normal lava:

  • It is a full, solid cube block with full block collision.
  • It does not damage entities.
  • It does not emit light.
  • All sides use the same still lava texture.

Creating liquids

Immediately after placement, the lava spawner creates blocks of lava on each of its four orthogonal sides. If these created blocks are removed, they will be regenerated after enough time.

Sponges

Unlike with normal lava, lava spawners are deleted by sponges.

History

Java Edition Indev
0.3120100122 Added lava spawner.
The block is referred to as a "volcano block".[1]
It appears in the player's inventory in a stack of 5.
20100124-2Lava spawners can now be found in Indev House chests in a stack of 99.
20100128Lava spawners can now be found in Indev House chests in a stack of 100.
20100129Lava Spawners can no longer be found in Indev House chests.
20100131Lava spawners now periodically generate lava around themselves even if said lava was previously removed.
20100201-2Lava spawners are now deleted by sponges.
Java Edition Infdev
20100624The lava spawner has been removed. As the ID is now empty, it now crashes the game with a NullPointerException if a chunk containing said block is loaded or an inventory containing one opened.
20100629 The numeric ID which lava spawners used is now used by oak stairs, and as such all existing lava spawners will seamlessly convert into oak stairs instead of causing the game to crash.

Issues

Lava Spawner is a removed block and as such issues relating to it cannot be fixed.
