Episode 6

" It's just a joke / It's just shopping / It's just the hair salon / It's just an unsettling feeling / It's just a study group / It's just summer break." is the sixth episode of the Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu anime series.

Synopsis

When Tadano gets to school, he finds Komi waiting for him in the classroom. She then nervously hands him a letter.

Summary

It's just a joke

After seeing on TV that telling jokes can be endearing, Komi writes jokes on pieces of paper and gives them to Tadano and Najimi. However, she has no sense of comedic timing, and ends up using bad puns and dad jokes. Najimi has Tadano tell a joke to give Komi guidance, but being put on the spot, Tadano resorts to a dad joke of his own. Komi, however, finds it amusing due to it being the same kind of joke she was using.

It's just shopping

Komi reveals she has never been clothes shopping before, so Najimi invites her, Tadano, and Agari to the mall to find Komi clothes, with Yamai stalking them there. They each pick out some clothes for Komi for her to try on. Each is rejected for different reasons: Najimi picks out a fancy yukata that she would never wear as a joke; Yamai's outfit goes overbudget; and Agari's T-shirt and jeans are deemed too plain by everyone else. Despite not knowing women's fashion, Tadano picks out a white dress which everyone - including Komi - adores, leading her to buy it.

It's just the hair salon

Wearing her dress, Komi goes to her usual beauty salon to get her hair trimmed. Karisu Maki, the owner, knows Komi and can understand her, whereas her new trainee, Kamiko Arai, thinks Komi's silence is a criticism of her customer service skills and is ashamed with herself. While leaving, however, Komi manages to thank Arai, who is later told of her social anxiety by Karisu. The next day, only Tadano notices her haircut, much to everyone else's shame.

It's just an unsettling feeling

Komi cannot sleep due to her thinking about her failed conversations throughout the day (mostly overthinking various scenarios, with the exception of one with Agari that actually did become awkward), but eventually falls asleep thinking about Tadano helping her with Agari.

It's just a study group

Exams time comes up, and Najimi - who is averse to studying - asks Komi and Tadano to form a study group in the library so that the two can pressure them into studying. They are watched over by the library monitor, Gorimi, who hits loud students with a fan and kicks them out if they get three strikes. The trio begin working, but Najimi immediately becomes bored, and they eventually receive all three strikes after trying to talk with Tadano, reading a manga and laughing, and playing Jenga (the latter of which also gets Komi and Tadano a strike). As Najimi gets thrown out, Komi admits to Tadano that she hates studying too. Everyone ultimately passes their exams, with Komi's grades being elite, Najimi's being above average despite zero studying, and Tadano's being exactly average. Yadano, meanwhile, does fine in some but fails others, yet is more furious that Komi scored higher than her on every exam.

It's just summer break.

Over the summer, both Komi and Tadano spend the first week feeling lonely and bored, but are too nervous to call each other. Najimi unknowingly solves the problem by inviting them both to go swimming at the pool, during which Komi speaks to Najimi for the first time.
