Chapter 11

Not a Killer ( (ころ) () じゃないです Koroshiya janai desu?) is the eleventh chapter of Tomohito Oda's Komi Can't Communicate.

Summary

After school, Najimi and Komi begin walking to their homes together, extremely awkwardly. A worried Tadano secretly tails them and watches from afar.

During the walk, Najimi makes small talk. They first apologize to Komi for saying she couldn't be their friend and reminds her that they met when they were kids. Najimi also asks for the secret to her popularity. Komi is unable to properly reply to all three statements, which Tadano—using his skills in perception—realizes is due to her nervousness. However, Najimi interprets her responses as hostility and discretely texts Tadano to say that they give up trying to befriend Komi. Tadano is surprised that even Najimi is unable to hold a conversation with Komi.

Suddenly two hooligans, Maa and Shii, approach them and tell Najimi how lonely they've been after Najimi moved away, as they were childhood friends. Najimi greets them and asks if they wanted anything, and Maa confesses that he liked Najimi and he wants "her" to be his girlfriend. Najimi quickly shoots down the request by stating that "he" is actually male. Tadano and Komi are surprised at the immediate rejection, and they remain confused over Najimi's true gender.

However, Maa refuses the rejection and forcefully grabs Najimi's wrist, despite their protests. He looks at Najimi hungrily, but is distracted by Komi suddenly placing her hand on his shoulder. He turns to see her holding his house keys, which he dropped. Tadano watches on, extremely proud at Komi's growth given her initiative to talk to a stranger. Komi tries to speak to him, but only small parts of the sentence come out, and Maa misinterprets her words as a threat of murder against him. In Maa's head, he thinks that Komi is suggesting she killed the last person who bothered Najimi, using nothing but their own house keys. Terrified, he and Shii run, seemingly for their lives.

In reality, Komi actually wanted to say that Maa dropped his keys, and his misunderstanding over her words depresses her. As Tadano comforts Komi, a shocked but grateful Najimi says they actually do want to be Komi's friend. Najimi then bursts out laughing, saying that Komi was funny and that they had the wrong idea about her. Komi, overjoyed in her success of making a second friend, jumps in the air. Afterwards, she and Tadano take Maa's keys to a police box.
