Chapter 499

My Graduation Ceremony, Part 2 is the four hundred ninety-ninth chapter of Tomohito Oda's Komi Can't Communicate.

Summary

Color Spread

As mentioned before, it's narrated the main meaning of "communication disorder", but with the difference that this definition adds that despite many has had trouble with communication, it's all right, because people can grow and change as long as they keep trying.

Chapter

At the ceremony entrance, Komi Shouko narrates how she wanted to be a normal girl and talk normally, laugh normally, have lunch with friends, have long conversations until sun sets, have misunderstandings that would make her feel sad, get carried away and complaining about life or even falling in love.

After the farewell address by Hiki Komorebi was done, the response by a graduated is now lead by Tadano Hitohito which made Komi feel remorse for turning down on making the discourse as it was originally planned to be her.

The discourse begins formal which made everyone at the ceremony to feel upset because it was boring and they demanded to make it more moving or make a rap of it.

Tadano is upset to be booed after his speech resulted in heckling, but he kept up his discourse. He mentions that his main goal when he joined Itan Private High School was to avoid making waves, but thanks to all the weird people at this high school, he didn't achieve that for a single day. He also included that a ninja nearly killed him which Komi felt sorry for it.

However, the most unusual person of all is also the first friend he made there. Not a day went by without surprising him and it was trully bizzare to address. For Tadano, Itan is an eccentric school, full of eccentric people, but yet with that, he never thought he'd be ordinarily happy and yet oddly reluctant to leave this school, which made everyone feel moved to tears.

Tadano asks if everyone had a good time at Itan, if are hesitant to leave and if everyone are uneasy about having to deal with new people, question which Komi mentally responds all with a yes. Which Tadano replies to don't worry, even if they are weird, stick out or go on their own way... Or even if they are ordinary, they're all gonna be alright.

The ceremony ends and Komi questions herself why she wanted to be normal, with herself responding that because otherwise she cannot make friends, people will hate or avoid her, leaving her all alone.

But after remembering her boyfriend's words, she was then surrounded by all of the friends she made at school and resolved that everything will be alright.

Outside school, Komorebi reached at Komi commenting that she put all of her heart on her speech, because she wanted to be her friend, and after feeling ready, she asked her to be friends.

Komi had a small visage of herself on Komorebi after her request, and feeling moved that albeit she had communication problems like her and tends to fail, she always kept trying just like Shouko always did. Due this, she rushed to embrace Hiki and tell her that she did it well and her speech turned out great, with Komorebi thanking her in tears.

Komi narrates and wonders if everyone thought that she was always giving her best on communicating, just as Hiki could notice on her.

After this emotional moment, Manbagi Rumiko approaches at Komi saying that Otori Kaede's mother dissapeared and wanted all to find her, leaving a mysterious note with a riddle to solve, which Shouko happily accepts much to Manbagi's surprise as she's freely communicating.

Characters in Order of Appearance

Events

  • Hiki Komorebi befriends Komi Shouko becoming the 100th in the list. Achieving Komi'sdream.
  • Komi Shouko graduated along with the 3rd year classes.
  • The main story of Komi Can't Communicate comes to an end.

Trivia

  • The riddle included a series of numbers that involve day(1), week(7), month(31) and year(365), if we decode with the combinations given in the note, the codenumber "13536764236" where each number mark a letter from the combination the phrase out of 13536764236 is readed as "demeotokaeo" which means nothing, but can be written in kanjis through the romaji present (でめおとかえお). If we swap お(o) and で(de) from their positions, the kanji writting would say "omedetokaede" (おめでとかえで "Congratulation Kaede"), probably the message from Otori's mother is to congratulate her daughter Otori Kaede for graduating.
  • This is the final chapter to be released on the Weekly Shōnen Sunday with a bonus chapter to be released on Volume 37.
