Chapter 48

Video Games is the forty-eighth chapter of Tomohito Oda's Komi Can't Communicate.

Summary

Nakanaka, via text/email, invites Komi to her "castle" for videogames, which Komi excessively deliberates over her reply, taking an hour to send one. She formally agrees, to which Nakanaka is overjoyed at.

Komi is nervous at visiting a friends house, alone, for the first time, but decides to give her best effort. As she tries (and fails) to push the intercom button at the house, Nakanaka opens the door, dressed in chuunibyou attire, and dramatically invites Komi inside (not revealing that she was standing at the door the whole time). Her room is filled with copious amounts of manga books, video games and anime figurines, with posters plastered on the walls and a 3 monitor, high quality gaming setup, all of which Komi is fascinated by. Nakanaka marvels that Komi, the class goddess, is in her room at her invitation, a feat not many have pulled off. She shows Komi the climax of a game she has been playing, and praises the graphics and story, while Komi watches amazedly, despite not understanding most of what she's saying. Nakanaka thinks that Komi finds the game boring due to her stoic reaction, so, panicking, she timidly calls Najimi to come over, her chuunibyou character faltering in the process.

Najimi promptly arrives with Tadano, reminiscing about how the room used to look different in grade school, as Nakanaka embarrassedly protests at Tadano's (a boy's) presence. Najimi assures her that he has a "weak presence", so it'll be like he's not there, to Tadano's confusion. Najimi suggests a 4 player game, Numabro's, aka Super Smash Swamp Pants Brothers (Super Smash Bros parody), which Komi has never played before. As Najimi (in game) tries to attack the defenceless Komi, Nakanaka repels the blow, as the two experienced players duel. Meanwhile, Tadano teaches Komi the movement buttons, as she accidentally walks into a swamp (in game). Komi accidentally attacks Tadano (again, in game) whilst trying to get mud off her character. When she does successfully, she momentarily blinds Najimi, who is violently defeated by Nakanaka. She celebrates her victory, as Najimi is visibly devastated and humbled.
