Chapter 22

Home Visit(ホームビジット|hōmubijitto) is the twenty-second chapter of Tomohito Oda's Komi Can't Communicate.

Summary

Throughout the day at school, Najimi excessively rants about topics to Komi and Tadano, before dropping a heavy question on Komi, if he/she can come over to play at Komi's house.

Tadano thinks that having people over to her house is too large a step, but a long period of deliberation, Komi agrees. Najimi also suggests that Tadano comes over, but he anxiously affirms that he shouldn't, although he secretly does want to go. Tadano doesn't think she'll say yes, but after a mix of nods and shakes it seems that she decided yes.

When they arrive, Najimi bolts straight in, but Tadano and Komi walk in nervously. They see Komi's mother, who they believe is stoic and silent like Komi, but she enthusiastically exclaims that Komi finally brought visitors over. She introduces herself as Komi Shuuko, an "eternal 17-year-old", and calls her husband down, but realises he hasn't come home yet, as she pulls a silly face, much to Komi's embarrassment.

As they enter Komi's room, Najimi hops onto her bed without invitation as Tadano and Komi awkwardly stand about. They're all silent for several minutes until Komi's mum comes in with snacks. Najimi claims they need to use the toilet, but actually stands outside the room and watches Komi and Tadano though the door, expecting awkward interactions. After 15 minutes of relatively awkwardness free silence, Najimi comes back in, confused, revealing that they lied.

Najimi concludes that there must be embarrassing secrets hidden in Komi's room, and, again without invitation, rummages underneath her bed, drawing out several communication help books. She also finds a photo album of her childhood, which both Komi and Tadano are embarrassed at seeing. Tadano realises that in the all of the photos Komi is alone, or without friends.

Much later, Najimi and Tadano leave, thanking Komi for hosting them. As Komi goes back into her room, she is both exhausted and happy. She gets an email from Najimi with a photo that she "secretly" took of the 3 of them hanging out. Komi asks her mother for a photo frame, her mother says it been a while since Komi has asked for anything

Trivia

  • According to Shuuko, Komi has never brought friends over to her house, or perhaps has never had any
  • Komi has a picture of her with a black cat
  • From her photo album, it is revealed that Komi can play the piano, has impeccable handwriting from classes, but can't communicate in English, likely due to her disorder, not a lack of understanding or innate ability, as Komi is well versed in all other academic subjects.
