Namman

Mournful Namman is a minor character in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Personality

Namman is, by all indications, the most progressive Sun-Priest known thus far: he acknowledges the faults with Carja tradition, opposes the gender restriction of the priesthood (even suggesting that a Nora could be a Sun-Priest), and supports reconciliation with other tribes and welcomes outlanders.^[1] While a firm believer in his own faith, Namman believes that the Sun's light is meant for all people, and that the sky is wide enough for the faiths of all tribes.^[2]

History

As he grew up, Namman looked up to the Temple of the Sun, listening to his Sun-Priest brother's voice echoing in the arches.^[1]

During the reign of Sun-King Jiran, Namman's brother fervently urged Namman away from the priesthood; however this did not deter Namman, even after his brother was killed for speaking out against the sacrifices of the Red Raids. Namman joined the priesthood, finding consolation for his brother's death by adorning his robes.^[1]

Horizon Zero Dawn

Aloy met Namman at the Sun-Ring in Meridian while he was hosting two pilgrims, Rea of the Utaru and Kimik of the Banuk, who traveled to the Sundom to pay their respects to fellow tribe members killed during the Red Raids. He requested Aloy's assistance in clearing various obstacles from the mourners' paths, as well as helping a third pilgrim, Brageld of the Oseram, deal with a stubborn Sun-Priest at the Shrine of Kings.^[3] While Aloy was gone, Namman was invited back Temple of the Sun as the Sun-Priests wanted to hear what he had to say about reconciliation with the other tribes.^[1]

While touring the defenses ready to defend against against the Eclipse, Aloy encountered Namman praying at the base of the Spire, as well as acknowledging the beliefs of the Nora, Oseram and Utaru.^[4]

Trivia

• Namman mentions his robes were originally dyed red with cinnabar.^[1] Cinnabar contains mercury, which is highly toxic and causes psychotic reactions, and could be what caused Sun-King Jiran to go mad.
