Araman the Founder was the first Sun-King and the founder of the Carja tribe. He was mentioned only in datapoints in Horizon Zero Dawn,[1][2][3] and by Studious Vuadis[4] and in item descriptions[5] in Horizon Forbidden West.
History
Araman grew up in the Savage East, an area which would come to be known to as the Sacred Lands.[2]
One day, Araman found a book in a ruin, which he would name the Leaves of the Old Ones, illuminated by a ray of sunlight. From the Leaves, he learned the practice of observing the sun, of man's position in the world, and knowledge of a written language. Araman tried to share this knowledge with others of his tribe. While some of the members understood the potential the Leaves possessed, others shunned and rejected them. As a result, Araman and his supporters were cast out of the tribe.[2]
Following the sun west, Araman and his supporters became a small tribe of humble wanderers, known as the Carja.[5] They travelled along what would later be called the Way of Broken Stones, where many families fell, including Araman's own, and persecution from people who destroyed bases Araman and his supporters tried to set up. Eventually, they saw what they would describe as a tower like a solid ray of the Sun in the distance, which they later dubbed the Spire.[2]
Araman led his supporters along the flight of the Glinthawks, through looming canyons and teeming jungles, until they saw the Spire again, and the Glinthawks perched upon it. The Spire's long shadow landed upon a mesa across the verdant valley, where Araman knew he had found a haven for the tribe, naming it Meridian, after a passage from the Leaves.[2]
Araman and his supporters carved their cliff-houses from the bounteous resources, and in time from the red rock of the mesa itself, raising the first columns of the City of the Sun.[2] Some of Araman's supporters would become his Sun-Priests, which he proclaimed most precious and worthy of safe keeping.[4]
After his reign ended, Sun-King Araman was succeeded by the Radiant Amavad.
Legacy
Araman is revered among the Carja as the founder of their tribe, and is believed, like all Sun-Kings, to be a representative for the Sun. What he learned from the Leaves not only served as the basis for the Carja faith, but the knowledge contained within them, including a written language, helped the Carja tribe to expand and advance far sooner than any of the surrounding tribes.
At some point, the Leaves of the Old Ones found by Araman became cracked and fell to dust.[3]
