“ | IMF Loan ability: Gives you $9,000 but you have to pay it back over time. | ” |
~ In-game description |
IMF Loan is the fourth upgrade of Path 2 for the Banana Farm in Bloons TD 6. In addition to a bigger bank capacity of $10,000 ($12,500 with the Bigger Banks MK), the IMF Loan has an activated ability where, upon activation, the player is loaned $9,000 ($10,000 with
Backroom Deals), at the cost of accruing debt. When in debt, 50% of the player's earnings go into paying it off gradually (cost of 40% earnings with
Backroom Deals). IMF Loan abilities can still be activated while the player is in debt, but each subsequent IMF Loan ability usage gives only $4,500 usable credit ($6,000 with Backroom Deals) and $4,500 additional debt ($6,000 with Backroom Deals), as 50% (40%) of each subsequent loan goes toward paying off previous loans, and therefore has no effect.
The activated ability has a cooldown time of 85 seconds, and additionally cannot be used until the loan is entirely paid off. Like all income-only abilities, IMF Loan can only be used a limited number of times per round and the ability is unusable after 3 minutes since the start of a round. The ability can only be used up to two times per round per IMF Loan, unless sold and rebought.
IMF Loan's ability is not affected by any income-increasing buffs such as Monkey City.
This upgrade costs $6,120 on Easy, $7,200 on Medium, $7,775 on Hard, and $8,640 on Impoppable.
Description
Overview

IMF Loan is a large blue-grey office building with yellow windows and a small entrance flanked by grey stone pillars, with steps leading up to the actual doorway. On the roof is a banana logo attached to a semicircular extension, as well as a small metal chimney.
Top Path crosspathing adds grey/gold stones around the foundation. Bottom Path crosspathing adds wooden, then cyan crates with a banana logo at the front of the building.
The IMF Loan offers greater capability to handle money, from a larger bank account, to the capability to loan a sum of cash at the drawback of debt, and the capability to deposit money (available only via Bank Deposits).
Activated Abilities
- See also: Activated Abilities (BTD6)#IMF Loan

Upon activation of the IMF Loan ability, the player will receive $9,000 but at the cost of $9,000 debt. The ability will recharge after 85 seconds, but can only be activated again if all of that IMF Loan Bank's debt is paid off. Both the loan and the debt will increase to $10,000 with the Backroom Deals MK.
How the "debt" works is that 50% of all income gained (40% of all income gain with Backroom Deals) from all sources will be used to pay off the debt. The amount of income used to pay off the debt is paid off onto the first IMF Loan that owes money and then onto any other subsequent in-debt IMF Loans after paying off the first IMF Loan. The in-debt penalty will remain until all of the debt is paid off from all IMF Banks. The amount of debt is displayed to the right of the cash counter on the top of the screen. The amount of debt of a certain IMF Loan Bank is shown in the respective IMF Loan Bank. Note that the player can still sell an IMF Loan Bank while any of the loans are in debt (including itself), but the loan debt will remain until fully paid off. Fortunately, it is impossible to lose as a result of not paying off IMF Loan debts because bankruptcy is not a lose condition.
Unlike normal loans, the player cannot manually pay off the debt of a certain IMF Loan Bank. However the total debt can be paid off quickly by repeatedly depositing and withdrawing from any bank using Bank Deposits.
The ability cannot be used if the player still has debt from the same IMF Loan Bank.
Much like all money-only abilities, the ability can only be used a limited times per round, up to twice per round for each IMF Loan. Starting from Version 28.0, it cannot be activated after 3 minutes after the start of a round, and after Version 39.0 cannot recharge cooldowns during penalty timers in competitive events like Ranked Boss Bloon Events and CT Bosses.
Targeting Priorities
IMF Loan, which stores money in its bank account similarly to its preceding upgrade Monkey Bank, does not have a real targeting priority. Instead, it has different buttons that alter its behavior.
IMF Loan comes with two "targeting priorities" by default: Collect, and Collect All. "Collect" withdraws all money from the current IMF Loan, while "Collect All" withdraws all money from all Banks (including IMF Loans) on screen. If the Bank Deposits MK is enabled, IMF Loan also receives the Deposit button, which deposits money into the IMF Loan's bank account.

Strategy
Summary
IMF Loan offers a tricky ability to master, as though its ability explicitly about gaining money in a large burst, it effectively cancels out the profit with the penalty of a loan which halves the gains of all revenue sources (including other IMF Loan abilities) by paying itself off, leading to an ability with zero sum profit if the player does not reinvest the cash.
Once the loan is used, income gain is reduced by 40% with Backroom Deals, 50% without the MK point. This same point also raises the cash gained per loan from $9,000 to $10,000, making the IMF Loan more productive overall. Another important part of IMF Loan are
Bank Deposits via Monkey Knowledge. It allows manual depositing of cash into the IMF Loan, which gains interest after holding the bank deposit for at least 2 rounds. In turn, proper bank deposits maximizes the IMF Loan's income, with constant micromanagement.
Note that using multiple loans at once will grant $9,000/$10,000 from the first ability, but each subsequent loan will be affected by other loan's debt, granting $4,500 ($6,000 with Backroom Deals) and will only increase the total loan by $4,500 ($6,000 with Backroom Deals) rather than $9,000/10,000, assuming it must pay off maximum debt. This value can be higher if debt is below this. Only one loan can be paid off at a time, and any large singular sum, primarily selling towers, that exceeds this debt will directly go to the player without paying off additional loans at a 50%/40% rate. This gives more value to very expensive towers when selling.
The IMF Loan provides the player with a powerful utility: instant income for instant purchasing power or reinvestment into more IMF Loans. This has several practical uses for Ranked Boss Bloon Events. On Least Tiers or Least Cash Bosses, the IMF Loan's ability can be used when needing quick cash to afford defenses against the boss, or more quickly afford other income generators like Support Chinook, Special Poperations, or Monkey-Nomics. Additionally, the IMF Loan's deposit ability makes it an efficient income generator by itself, without needing any crosspaths.
For Timed Bosses, the IMF Loan has two main strategies. The first is by combining an IMF Loan with the Monkeyopolis, called 'IMFopolis'. This can create more income than by simply using a Bank's profit to create a Miniopolis right away, and is a common early game farming method used with Benjamin. See Monkeyopolis for details on the IMFopolis strategy.
The second is IMF Loan farming, which features multiple IMF Loans used to quickly generate massive amounts of cash to enable certain strategies for Tier 1 Bosses. This strategy is rarely used, as it has the notable downside of massive amounts of debt, which can result in slower times for later tiers of bosses. It is also notoriously difficult to pull off, as rounds must be stalled without getting penalty to enable the loan abilities to come off of cooldown, and as such is usually only seen on Top 3 runs. It is occasionally used on certain Timed Boss weeks, most commonly on Vortex, where the extra income for Tier 1 can allow for much more expensive towers like Ray of Doom to be used. Note that this method of farming is much more common and powerful for Multiplayer Timed Bosses, as the separate income of each player allows for the debt of the loans to be effectively ignored. See Income Farming for more details on this strategy.
Efficiency
The following are tables regarding the income production rate of the normal Monkey Bank function of the IMF Loan upgrade. In general, it has a higher bank capacity but a similar income production rate to Monkey Bank. As such, its bank functionality does not become more efficient than Monkey Bank until its own bank balance surpasses the Monkey Bank's maximum bank capacity.
Income earning per round (35.0-Present)
Version 35.0 secretly changed the total amount of income per round the income packets generate, in addition to accepting all external buffs that increase income (mainly Monkey City).
Instead of $230/$270/$310 per round, the Bank now produces $225/$274/$325 per round, ignoring the added interest applied afterwards. Also, More Valuable Bananas now increases income generation of each cash packet.
Also assumes that the Bigger Banks MK is active.

Bank Deposits MK (35.0-Present)
Adding Bank Deposits will almost always increase profit per round. However, after some testing and calculating, the most efficient strategy has made itself apparent, To save space in the table, assume that all farms have the 2-4-0 upgrade.
The money is shown as the amount in the bank at the end of the round (after interest has been applied) and as if all deposits happened during the first round.
Calculations about the average profit per round for each scenario have been made. It is concluded it is more efficient to withdraw 1 round before the bank reaches its maximum capacity. Otherwise, the last interest payment is reduced due to the account balance hitting its cap of $12,500. The profit per round can be calculated by subtracting the amount deposited from the amount of money in the bank, then dividing by the number of rounds before withdrawing.

Legacy Info:
Income earning per round (12.0-34.3)
As of Version 12.0, bank income bonus has decreased from +$160 to +$150 by default, including for IMF Loan. Therefore, instead of at least $240 per round, this income gain is decreased to at least $230 per round.
Note: The table assumes that the IMF Loan has been initially upgraded before the round starts and that the income is given as when after the round.
Also assume that no manual deposits from the Bank Deposits MK are done.

Income earning per round (11.0-11.2)
As of Version 11.0, bank income bonus for Level 9+ Benjamin is increased to +12% instead of +8%. Note: The table assumes that the Monkey Bank has been initially upgraded before the round starts and that the income is given as when after the round.
|
Income earning per round (pre-11.0)
The following is information regarding income earning per round for the IMF Loan before it received a buff when combined with Benjamin. On Version 7.0 and later, there was a Monkey Bank nerf that did not affect IMF Loans or Monkey-Nomics. Note: The table assumes that the IMF Loan has been initially upgraded before the round starts and that the income is given as when after the round. Note 2: In BTD6 v3.x, the Monkey Bank (implied for the IMF Loan; originally tested by Monkey Bank) does not appear to consistently calculate interest correctly for the 0-3-x and 1-3-0 banks. The following results are the maximum of three tests

Mathematics
Python code is written below as a demonstration of a rough model of a Monkey Bank simulation. Currently, this code does not take into account the presence of Benjamin's Bank buffs (multiply the total deposit per round by 1.05 or 1.12 for Level 5-8 and Level 9+, respectively).
Variables:
account
: The bank balance of the current bank account. Code below declares it as $0 (0).deposit
: The total deposit per round into the current bank account. Code below declares it as $230 (230).interestrate
: The interest rate of the current bank account. Code below declares it as +15% per round (1.15).capacity
: The maximum bank capacity of the current bank account. Code below declares it as $10,000 (10000).i
: The iterator that loops the number of "rounds" for the Bank to run. Please change the hardcoded maximumi
value to whatever number of rounds you wish.

Additional Tips
- The best crosspath choice for the basic Bank functionality is usually 2-4-0 for the maximum income gain, but for IMF Loan the 0-4-2 may be better if trying to utilize the higher sellback and reducing inconvenience of
Bank Deposits micro.
- IMF Loan's ability takes a long time to go from initial cooldown. In the 30's rounds, it may take up to about 3 rounds in order for the ability to become ready without getting penalties in Ranked Boss.
- Try to use strategies for Bank Deposits to maximize usage of manual deposits (see Bank Deposits#Strategy for further context).

Version History
Balance Changes
IMF Loan was formerly one of the least effective income-production towers in the game, not only because the loan's income gain was less than the cost of the upgrade itself, but because it initially did not have any other perks. Subsequently, it has evolved to become a stronger version of the Monkey Bank, more specifically because it kept the Monkey Bank's old bank capacity since Version 7.0, and its upgrade price was slashed to an acceptable level on an even earlier update. It also kept the benefit of Bank Deposits, later becoming popularized in Boss Events because of the income potential of that MK Point.
IMF Loan would become more popular among Ranked Boss players after Version 32.0 nerfed the Monkeyopolis to no longer be worth going for early, and is a dominant staple of Ranked Boss events that would be significantly curbed with nerfs to the IMF Loan Ability in Version 35.0. After v35.0, the IMF Loan is only used when farming with it can afford important towers which are unaffordable otherwise, such as a Ray of Doom or Plasma Monkey Fan Club, or during low ability cooldown weeks. Version 40.0 and 42.0 slightly buffed its value, giving it use for the IMFopolis strategy.
- 4.0
Cost of IMF Loan is cheaper ($12,000 → $7,500)
- 7.0
Indirect buff, because IMF Loan's capacity was kept at $10,000 but Monkey Bank's capacity was lowered to $7,000.
- 8.0
IMF Loan ability (along with other income-based abilities) now undergo the full initial cooldown before initial ability usage.
- 12.0
IMF Loan bonus cash produced per round reduced from $160 to $150 (from $240 per round to $230).
- 14.0
Bug: If the IMF Loan's debt has been paid off, the Banana Farm that triggered it cannot use its ability until the next round starts. The same applies to Monkey-Nomics.
- 14.2
Bug fix; the ability no longer requires the next round to start upon paying off the IMF Loan (again, also applies to Monkey-Nomics).
- 18.0
Added Monkey Knowledge Point "Bank Deposits": this MK allows the player to deposit money into the Monkey Bank, earning interest over time.
- 19.0
Deposits do not gain income until 1 round after being deposited.
[undocumented] Monkey Bank with EZ Collect (or Banana Salvage) will now glow upon detecting full once it adds another pocket of cash, rather than only just after the round it becomes full.
- 27.0
“ | Given the relatively low value and use case of upgrading Banks further to IMF Loan, the overall incredible power of the Bank Deposits MK on Banks, and the fact that Banks are majorly considered to be the most powerful farm; we have decided to limit this incredibly powerful Knowledge point [sic] until the IMF Loan to both reign it in and give a little more back to that lacking T4 upgrade. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
Indirect buff, since Bank Deposits no longer work for Monkey Bank but still function for IMF Loan and above.
- 28.0
“ | Banana Farm's xx2 upgrade is the inferior crosspath, so we've amped up the utility with the lazy aspect so that if it's going to be inferior for production, it's at least going to be extra lazy & less far behind. [...] | ” |

[bug fix] Resolved an issue where selling an IMF Loan at the same time and taking a loan would not immediately try to pay back the loan with that tower’s sellback
- 35.0
“ | For sake of consistency we want Monkey Bank to increase in cash generation when used with sources that externally buff generation so everything works as expected, however along with this buff the current power of IMF loan on this path already feels too strong so we are lowering that power for IMF Loan in exchange. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
IMF Loan's ordinary cash generation will now increase in cash generation with external buffs. Note that this still doesn't affect its ability.
IMF Loan monetary grant per ability reduced from $10,000 to $9,000
IMF Loan monetary grant per ability with
Backroom Deals Monkey Knowledge reduced from $12,000 to $10,000
Resolved a bug that caused Collecting All from multiple x-3-x Banks or higher to only target repayment back towards a single active IMF Loan
- This is a nerf because it means that Collecting All cannot have multiple banks bypass Debt after 35.0, as before 35.0, they did not all need to pay debt when the debt of one is payed off.
- This also applies to selling an IMF loan with bank deposits.
- 40.0
“ | The current power of xx5 Village combined with previous nerfs to Middle Farm have it currently feeling underappreciated for farm profits, some slight price adjustment. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
IMF Loan cost reduced ($7500 → $7200)
- Overall price decrease is $450, due to Monkey Bank costing $150 less.
- 42.0
“ | Players have made it clear that for Boss Events the current cooldown on IMF Loan regularly puts it into a position where timing is frustratingly tight in order to maximize profits when farming with banks, so we’ve agreed to loosen up on this cooldown to help with this issue. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi |
IMF Loan cooldown reduced from 90s to 85s

Trivia
- According to internal text, IMF stands for "International Monkey Fund". In real life, IMF is an abbreviation for International Monetary Fund, a financial agency that loans money to countries with troubled economies.
- While the IMF Loan's loan mimicks many attributes of a loan, more specifically an automatic payment of an interest-free loan, it doesn't work the same as a loan from a real-world bank for the following reasons:
- IMF Loan's loan never has income penalties for not paying back debt promptly. In addition, real-life loans typically have a maximum loan debt allowance, which otherwise would lead to financial consequences such as bankruptcy.
- One can basically not pay back an IMF Loan for however amount of rounds as the player wishes without losing from forced bankruptcy.
- Assuming the IMF Loans are run by the same company, paying off a loan with an existing loan from the same company would be not practical, since that would be counterintuitive to a bank.
- There was a known bug related to IMF Loan in Co-Op where towers can disappear when the server refreshes the map to sync the game if there is an IMF Loan present on the map. This seems to be patched around version 12.0.
