“ | Heavy duty bombs can smash through 2 layers of Bloon at once and pop more Bloons. | ” |
~ In-game description |
Heavy Bombs is the second upgrade of Path 1 for the Bomb Shooter in Bloons TD 6. Each explosion deals +1 damage, including for any crosspath upgrades. On top of this, primary explosions gain +10 pierce, for up to 38 bloons per shot instead of 28 from Bigger Bombs. Secondary explosions (from Cluster Bombs and above) gain +10 pierce (total of 24 pierce) and +1 damage, while tertiary explosions (from Recursive Cluster and above) gain +40 pierce (total of 96 pierce) and +1 damage. Fragments deal 2 damage but does not increase pierce per fragment.
This upgrade costs $550 on Easy, $650 on Medium, $700 on Hard, and $780 on Impoppable.
Description
Overview

In terms of overall appearance, this upgrade is almost identical to the previous upgrade, Bigger Bombs; the only differences are grey wheels instead of brown (possibly made of stone or metal instead of wood) and a second red reinforce band on the back. If given to Cluster Bombs and above, the Heavy Bombs crosspath is identified by the second red ring at the backside of the cannon as well as the first ring near the front of the barrel. A second thick ring is given to any crosspath along Path 2 other than Faster Reload, wrapping it around the tip of the missile.
Heavy Bombs grants +1 damage and +10 explosion pierce, dealing 2 damage and 38 pierce per primary explosion. It also gives bonus crosspathing bonuses, giving more damage and pierce in different ways.
Targeting Priorities
Heavy Bombs targets bloons using the standard targeting priorities. It shoots straight movement projectiles.
- First: Targets the first bloon visible within its range.
- Last: Targets the last bloon visible within its range.
- Close: Targets the closest bloon visible within its range.
- Strong: Targets the strongest bloon visible within its range.

Strategy
Summary
Heavy Bombs increases damage for the Bomb Shooter, and increases the maximum number of bloons each explosion can affect. Combined with the practically double damage for most Bomb Shooter upgrades (except MOAB Maulers and their later upgrades, and Bomb Blitz), the extra pierce allows for better combat versus hyperdense rounds. This upgrade has greatest effect for Cluster Bombs, as all its explosions including secondary explosions gain a significant boost to damage and pierce.
An interesting side effect with this upgrade allows a Bomb Shooter to be significantly better against Rainbow Bloons, as it allows its explosion to release Whites and Blacks from the Rainbow Bloon, opening up potential damage to the White Bloons where a normal Bomb Shooter would be stuck with the Zebra layer's explosive resistance.
Tips
- Generally speaking, this upgrade should be bought in combination with upgrades, in order to optimize the Bomb Shooter's attacks. Heavy Bombs is generally the better crosspath upgrade for Cluster Bombs and Recursive Cluster. Heavy Bombs does not improve Frag Bombs attacks, however, but is decent with Missile Launcher.
- Heavy Bombs can be added to MOAB Maulers for the extra pierce, to handle hyperdense rounds like Round 98 a bit more effectively. However, MOAB Maulers with Bigger Bombs already gain a sizable amount of pierce, not to mention that adding more 1-3-0 Maulers under Primary Mentoring are far cheaper than lesser numbers of 2-3-0 Maulers also under the range of Primary Mentoring.
- 2-3-0 Maulers are much more effective if combined with Primary Expertise, however, since it heavily reduces overall cost of all max-crosspathed T3 Bomb Shooters; the high synergy with Primary Expertise's free T2 upgrades allows for Heavy Bombs' massive pierce bonus to truly come into play with Maulers.
- Since the Recursive Cluster gains bonus damage already, Heavy Bombs' bonus damage on top will allow each of Recursive's explosions to deal 3 damage, enough to bypass all explosion-immune layers of a Rainbow Bloon, from a Rainbow Bloon directly to Pink Bloon.
Version History
Balance Changes
Heavy Bombs was buffed to make crosspathing a Bomb Shooter with this particular upgrade more useful for Middle Path. Incidentally, this has indirectly affected the pierce of secondary clusters from Cluster Bombs and Recursive Cluster, which since made Heavy Bombs the dominant crosspath for those upgrades.
