Screwdriver

A screwdriver punch. Blast through the toughest of the enemies.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[1]

The Screwdriver (スクリュードライバー Sukuryūdoraibā?), alternatively spelled as the Screw Driver, is a move used by Knuckles the Echidna. When performing this move, Knuckles dives through the air while spinning around.

Description

When performing the Screwdriver, Knuckles does a forward dash through mid-air, similar to a dive, where he keeps his fists out in front of him and horizontally spins his entire body rapidly, turning himself into a flaming drilling projectile.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Screwdriver v1

The Screwdriver's first appearance was in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), where it is referred to as the Screwdriver (スクリュードライバー Sukuryūdoraibā?). In this game, it is one of Knuckles' standard attacks. When performing it, Knuckles leaves a fiery red trail as he dashes forward.

To perform the Screwdriver in gameplay, the player must hold down Square/ and then release it. When performing the Screwdriver near an enemy, Knuckles will home in on the enemy and attack it, similar to the Homing Attack. However, this can only be done once per attack, and if the player tries to chain it, Knuckles will perform the Ground Shaker instead. Additionally, when holding down Square/, Knuckles will assume a stance where he pulls his right fist back and charges his power in the form of red energy. During the charge, Knuckles is immune to all enemy attacks.

Mario & Sonic series

In the Mario & Sonic series, Knuckles' special ability is called Screw Driver and is used to give the player an instantaneous boost of speed during certain events. While its performance is the same as in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), it lacks the fiery trail.
