Multiplayer is a mode where more than two players compete or cooperate with each other in certain gamemodes. Many games across the Sonic the Hedgehog series have featured this playstyle.
Game appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, two players race each other as Sonic and/or Tails in split-screen within selective stages, specifically Emerald Hill, Casino Night, and Mystic Cave. The Zones are changed for the mode, along with the music. Players are ranked in score, time, end amount of rings, total amount of rings, and number of broken item boxes. Whichever player scores the most in a level wins. There are also Special Stages, which remain the same. In Special Stages, whoever collects the most rings wins.
To make the race challenging, there is a Teleporter and an Eggman item box. The Teleporter, as the name implies, teleports the player to another position in the level. The Eggman item box damages the player.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (& Knuckles)
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, there is a 2-player Competition mode, which has five Zones: Azure Lake, Balloon Park, Chrome Gadget, Desert Palace, and Endless Mine. Competition Mode has three modes: Grand Prix, which is a race with set chosen Zones, Match Race, which is similar, but the Zones are chosen by the player, and Time Attack, which is 1-player, where the objective is to beat a Zone in a small amount of time. You can play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Adventure 2 features five different 2-player modes. Race is a race where the player has to reach the Goal Ring first. Hunting is a race to find the given amount of Master Emerald shards. Shooting is a fight, where whoever's HP Gauge goes down first loses. Random chooses between the previous three modes randomly. Kart Racing, which is unlocked after beating all Kart Racing stages in the Hero and Dark story, is exactly like those stages, being a kart race.
There are twelve playable characters. The first six are the main playable characters in the two mainline stories: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Dr. Eggman, and Rouge. They are immediately unlocked. The other six are Amy, Big, Metal Sonic, Tikal, Chaos, and a Chao, who are all unlocked through getting A-ranks for all levels for different characters.

Trivia
- In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), there is much unused content regarding the multiplayer modes. The most prominent one is that Tag Mode originally had a story revolving around Sonic and Shadow working together to collect the Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman. Many voice clips and pieces of text remain within the game that alludes to this.
