Bugsy

I'm Bugsy! I never lose when it comes to Bug-type Pokémon. My research is going to make me an authority on Bug-type Pokémon! Let me demonstrate what I've learned from my studies.

Bugsy (Japanese: ツクシ, HepburnTsukushi) is the Gym Leader of the Azalea Town Gym. Beating him earns the player the Hive Badge. He specializes in using Bug-type Pokémon. The player character can challenge Bugsy only after Team Rocket is defeated in the Slowpoke Well.

Appearance

Bugsy is a young boy with a feminine purple bob and purple eyes (Sometimes appears with grayish-blue and brown in earlier artwork and games). He is almost always seen carrying a net.

Gold and Silver

Bugsy wears a pale green collared shirt with a white collar, matching shorts and white ankle socks with brown shoes that appear to have a Velcro strap.

Crystal

Bugsy's appearance remains the same as it is in Gold and Silver.

HeartGold and Soul Silver

His shirt is different shades of green and he also wears a yellow neckerchief, with green shorts with turn ups, white knee socks with a green stripe and the same shoes.

Personality

Bugsy is a gym leader who loves his profession and the Bug-type Pokémon he trains, he claims that someday this type of Pokémon will conquer the world. His combat techniques are characterized by being unpredictable, but very effective and useful.

Etymology

The name Bugsy comes from "bugs".

His Japanese name, Tsukushi, originates from 虫 (mushi, insect) or つくつく法師 (tsukutsukubōshi, a type of cicada). Following the plant-based naming with most Gym Leaders, it may also literally be 土筆 (tsukushi, the Japanese name for the horsetail plant which often grows in Japan).

Biography

Games

He claims to have discovered Fury Cutter move. After the player character defeats him, he will give the player character the Hive Badge and TM49 (Fury Cutter) in Gold, Silver and Crystal. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is TM89 (U-Turn).

Trivia

  • Bugsy is the first Gym Leader that specializes in Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Bugsy appears to be androgynous due to his longish purple hair and young age, until it was immediately revealed that he is a boy.
  • His HeartGold and SoulSilver artwork, he has pale skin, but in the anime and game sprites, he appears to have a less pale skin coloring. This trait is shared with Pike Queen Lucy, there is a chance that this is a probability due to the shading and darkness of the room he's in, though, in the interior of the Azalea Town's roof in the anime, it looks bright.
  • In Gold and Silver all of Bugsy's Pokémon are male, but in HeartGold and SoulSilver, they are female.
  • Bugsy is the only important Trainer with more than one Pokémon in the main series games who leads with their ace, as seen in HeartGold and SoulSilver (the B2W2 Tournaments don't count; the term ace in this case refers to highest level Pokémon).
