Gordie

Gordie is a Gym Leader that was introduced in Generation VIII. He is a user of Rock-type Pokémon, and can only be fought in Pokémon Sword.

Appearance

Gordie is a tall and stocky young man with fair skin, beige hair with yellow highlights, and blue eyes. He wears a stylish outfit that consists of blue and black sunglasses, a brown and black jacket, and a white colored blazer with the Rock-type symbol on it. He also wears gray and white shorts with a multitude of symbols and his Gym number on them, along with a contraption with which he carries his Poké Balls. Finally, he wears gray and blue shoes and has a gold necklace with a blue gemstone inset around his neck.

Personality

Due to being one of the top Trainers in Galar in terms of popularity and skill, Gordie is somewhat cocky, smug and overconfident. Because of this, he is a sore loser, often shutting himself in the locker room whenever he is defeated. Nevertheless, he cares about his fans and does his best to keep them happy. Compared to the hard-hitting battle style of his mother, Gordie uses a refined and graceful style in battle, tempering it with strict training.

Etymology

While Gordie is named after a plant (said plant being a gourd) like most of the characters from Sword and Shield, his name may also come from "ore" (a mineral mined in order to extract metals or other desired materials from it) and geode (a rock containing a hollow space lined with crystals). Less flatteringly, his name may also come from gordo, which means "fat" in Spanish.

Makuwa, his Japanese name, may come from マグマ (maguma, magma, molten rock) or the minerals mackinawite, macaulayite, or macdonaldite.

Biography

Gordie is the son of Melony, and has a younger sister and three younger brothers, as shown in his concept art. He was trained from an early age to succeed his mother as the Circhester Gym Leader. However, complications ensued when Gordie, annoyed by Melony's pressuring to use Ice-type Pokémon, decided to use Rock-type Pokémon instead. This resulted in a fight between the two, with distancing himself from his mother since.

Gordie is first fought in Circhester Stadium. He can only be fought if Pokémon Sword is being played—in Pokémon Shield, his mother Melony replaces him as Circhester's Gym Leader. During the player character's trial in his Gym, Gordie will attempt to guide them and help them through, telling them to press on even when they have no idea what lies ahead. When the battle starts, Gordie's cockiness will show through, with him claiming that his Pokémon are unbeatable. When Gordie runs into a rough patch, he will Gigantamax his Coalossal and use G-Max Volcalith, telling the player character to "savor the pain." When Gordie's team lies broken, he will tell the player that he wants to climb into a hole (a quote that his mother says when she is defeated).

After progressing through the game enough, Gordie can be fought again in Wyndon Stadium, where his cockiness will be overflowing. When he is humbled with defeat a second time, he will apologize to the player character for losing his cool. He will also tell them that he wants to battle again in the future.

In the post-game, when Dynamax Pokémon are running rampant, Gordie can once again be found in Circhester Stadium, where he will help the player defeat a Dynamax Gigalith. After the Gigalith is defeated, Gordie will give the player character a copy of his League Card.

Gordie is a young rising star that many suspect will be the Champion someday. Though Rock-type Pokémon are typically known for being rough and unrelenting, Gordie has worked hard to achieve victory through a refined and graceful battle style. He always tries to keep his fans happy and thus is very popular among the audience. On the other hand, he has the surprising tendency of shutting himself away in the locker room when he is defeated, making postdefeat interviews a rarity. This doesn't bother most of his fans, though, and they see this behavior as endearing.

Gordie is one of the top Trainers of the Galar region, both in terms of popularity and skill. His strict training style means that his Gym has few Gym Trainers, but he does have quite a fan base. Gordie does his best to make sure his fans are happy, often seen giving out autographs or hosting events. There are currently three photo albums of Gordie, all published through the support of his fan base. This card shows another special photo, taken specifically for this purpose at a photo studio.
